Well, I headed out for my first walk in several days this morning. It has been so unbearably hot that I just couldn't get myself motivated. But, after I got back, I had that feeling of accomplishment. At this point, I have already lost 12 pounds, and I have to say that there is a difference between the speed and regularity of weight loss with walking and without.

I have had to really limit my walks because of extreme temperatures and the fact that I have to take my 11-month-old daughter with me wherever I go. But, I am getting ready to head out on our 2-mile walk right now! It is cool and breezy in spite of the sun, and this is the only chance I have had in two days.

It is very important to make sure you push yourself when you stop feeling your walking worjout; going a little further or adding weights really helps.

Well, I skipped out on walking for two days in a row, so today, regardless of the excessive heat, I headed out for my usual two-mile round trip walk. It always feels so good to get home from it; I feel like if I accomplished nothing else today, at least I got my exercise!

It is hot, hot, hot outside right now, so Ithink I am going to wait to go for a walk until the evening. Usually I like to get them "out of the way" earlier, but for once (in N Mich) it is hot. I find that an evening walk with my husband is a nice way to help our dinners settle and spend a few extra minutes together.

I am officially down seven pounds since I started this calorie counting about three weeks ago. I did not have a walk today, though, because I spent the whole day painting the kitchen cabinets with my husband--also a good workout (but that is a whole different forum topic, I am sure).

Going to museums, parks, zoos and nature trails are all great ways to go out with the family; it promotes your health along with the rest of the family's.

Weather permitting, I am going to walk both days as well! In fact, I think that when I skip a day, I really feel less invigorated and more sluggish and UNenergized. You know what I mean?

Well, I was putting off my walk yesterday because of a TV program that I wanted to watch. Then suddenly, as if it were divine intervention, the power went out. So, I headed out for my walk and kept walking until I found the nearest place with power to get a cold beverage--1.5 miles away! Even the electricity wants me to keep walking.

I'm no expert, but I did work in the nutrition industry for a few years. As far as the shin splints, I agree about preventative shoes and might add that some calcium for the bone and some sort of joint remedy (glucosamine/chondroitin) might--in the long run--provide some relief. Just a suggestion.

Also, I think that this really does constitute as a motivational forum because walking helps to motivate people to become more active! Plus, anyone who starts to slack on their weekly walks need only come back here to be inspired to get out there and hoof it. Fitness is part of walking, but I find the walks to be continuing motivation to stick to this plan because of the results I see--two inches off of the thighs in a few weeks.

Wow! When I started this thread yesterday, I had no idea how many other people loved to walk! Seriously! I just got back from another invigorating spped-walk to the store and back (2 miles round trip), and it is starting to feel like I need to increase my distance; I am not feeling "it" anymore, if anyone out there knows what I mean.

Maybe the two of you could go for a nice evening walk together a few nights per week to get you in the mood for more serious workouts. Sometimes you have to wean yourself into excercise just like you have to wean yourself off of eating badly. My husband and I started going out for walks together after dinner with our baby, and now I go out walking myself everday with the stroller. By the time winter hits, I will be so used to working out, I think I will be ready for the gym.

Hey, the truth may hurt, but the lies will hurt you more in the long run. I had been really tired of my husband-bless his heart--telling me how great I look when I know I have gotten too heavy for a lot of my clothes. If it takes a rude (outspoken) outsider's comment, then at least I get the truth. Now eh nI get compliments on my weight, I know that I have worked hard for them and am happy to hear it; if I hear anything negative, then I figure, "hey, you should have seen me last month!

The fact that those rude comments stick in our minds is proof that it may be an opinion we have been harboring ourselves; I found my "rude" friend's comment to be a slap in the face--the kind you get for your own good, like when you are getting hysterical. Well, rather than hysterical, I was becoming ignorant of my weight and subsequent possible health problems. As much as the comment hurt, I can say it is what finally lit the fire under my butt.

The skinny comments stick just as much!!!

Portioning premade snacks may sound like a lot of work, but if you are going to be hungry and are prone to spurts of bad eating, having preportioned foods (baggies of veggies or fruits) makes for an easy target when you go into the refridgerator or cupboard. If it is something sweet you are craving, make a few batches of sugar free jello jigglers or sugar free puddings in portioned cups (dixie cups work great) to help you find a fast and SAFE fix for unwarranted eating.

Sometimes it is difficult to find the time to run every week. I take my daughter for walks around the cul-de-sac across the street, and that helps get some sort of work-out in my schedule.
