By running 5.2 miles every day and eating only 1500 calories you are doing a lot of harm to your body. You need to be eating way more than that, probably even double that amount. It seems that you are still very much suffering from an eating disorder and I would suggest you seek professional help asap. Many people have died through exercise and restriction even at perfectly healthy weights. Also, regarding your metabolism, it will not be slow forever. You can definitely get back to a point where you are eating enough and maintaining your weight with no restriction. However, right now, you need to seek the help of someone who specializes in the treatment of eating disorders.

1800-2000 calories for maintenance doesn't sound like much at all. I would not worry about gaining weight or trying to burn off calories. In fact, I think you're more likely to need more calories than less.

1500 calories is too low to maintain on at a healthy weight, let alone recover from a restrictive eating disorder. The only reason you're gaining weight is because your metabolism is suppressed. I would advise you to stop exercising and up your calories to at least 2500 per day. You will not gain a ton of fat or lose control and keep eating and eating until you become overweight. You're body needs a lot of calories, not only for weight gain but also repair in general. By compulsively exercising and eating 1500 calories you are still restricting. I also think you would benefit from seeking professional help from therapists and dieticians who specialize in eating disorders. It's great that you're taking steps to recover, which is a huge feat in itself, but you definitely need more calories!

You're gaining weight because your metabolism is suppressed. Your body has a lot to repair and it needs a lot of calories. Also, bloating in your stomach is completely normal and nothing to worry about. I highly suggest you visit this website (I wouldn't be surprised if you have heard of it before): http://www.gwynetholwyn.com

This article, in particular, might be helpful: http://www.gwynetholwyn.com/blog/2011/9/14/i- need-how-many-calories.html

She explains it a lot better than I can and there's a lot of information on the blog, plus forums if you're seeking any support or advice from others who have experience.

I know it sounds like a lot of calories but you need it! And congrats on starting to gain weight and recover. You're definitely on the right path :)

1500-1700 is way too little. 2100 sounds much better and you could likely eat more than that. (For example, I'm the same age, weight, and shorter than you and maintain on about 2100 with no exercise). But listen to your body. If you're hungry for more, then eat! But why are you trying to maintain? 110 pounds for your height is classified as underweight, and if you're strength training and building muscle that usually makes your weight higher. I'm not sure about your specific situation but, unless you've always been naturally tiny, it's likely you are too thin.

Anyways, bottom line- 1700 calories is not enough.

I'm really surprised you were given a weight maintenance plan of 1550 calories, especially right after recovery. It honestly sounds more like a weight loss plan. On the plan I was given we use exchanges not calories, but it usually comes out to around 2200, sometimes more sometimes a little less (and this is without exercise). I've maintained on it for several months now so maybe try bumping your calories up to around 2000 and see how you feel. It's a much more normal maintenance amount and if you're still hungry, which wouldn't be surprising or out of the ordinary,  don't be afraid to eat a more.

I'm very confused as to why you are looking to lose weight when you just recovered from anorexia and are at a healthy weight. You said it was only a year ago when you were in inpatient, so you can't have been recovered for that long. I honestly don't believe that losing weight at this point is a good idea and think you need to make sure that your wishes to lose weight are not for disordered reasons. However, if you do believe that losing weight is for the best then no, I don't think you need to worry about your body storing fat. Yet the fact that your concerned about something like that seems to be a red flag for disordered thinking. Just make sure your doing this for the right reasons.

Original Post by pebs13:

Hi, I was feeling inspired by some food survey currently circulating, so here goes! Share your fitness preferences, even if you're just beginning!

1) Do you prefer to work out in the morning, afternoon, or night?
Morning
2) Why do you have that preference?
So I can shower after and go about my day without having to squeeze working out in.
3) What is your fitness activity of choice? Why?
Running because I enjoy it and it's a huge stress reliever
4) Do you enjoy listening to music or tv while you work out?
Music while I run, tv while I cross train
5) How do you feel before a work out?
Depends, sometimes I can't wait to work out. Other times I might feel unmotivated
6) How about afterwards?
Usually happy and relaxed
7) What's your second choice when it comes to working out- and are these preferences due to enjoyment or calorie burning?
Weight training or biking (best if it's mountain biking but the stationary bike works too). And it's for enjoyment
8) if previous answers were due to calorie burning, what work out activity do you most Enjoy?

9) Do you have a pre-work out stretch routine, and if so, what is it?
Not really. Might stress if I feel really tight but I do most of my stretching after
10) Do you drink fitness drink(s) and if so which one(s)?
Not really
11) What about work out foods (protein bars, etc) and which ones?
Sometimes but it's not really a routine
12) You wake up and you're feeling really sore, do you work out that day anyways?
If I'm unbearable sore, no. If I'm mildly sore I'll do cardio. But, if I'm in pain (and it's not muscle soreness) I won't for fear of injuring myself
13) You get to the gym and there's an exercising beast where you would normally go, (example: huge weightlifter, sprinting runner) how do you react?
Do something else or, if it's weightlifting equipment, ask if I can use it between their sets
14) You see someone using equipment wrong, what do you do?
Nothing. Unless they might actually seriously hurt themself
15) If you use them, what's your favorite brand of running shoes/sock? If not, what is your favorite brand of whatever gear you do wear?
Asics running shoes
16) What can you do before/after a work out that makes you feel most confident about yourself?
Before- think about previous successful runs
17) What advice/words of comfort/words of wisdom could you give future you on the day future you doesn't want to work out to motivate him/her?
Remind myself how I great I always feel after working out
18) What is one feature of your work out or habit relating to fitness that you would like to change by New Year's?
Run regularly again after recovering from my current injury
19) How long do you work out, and how many times a week?
Usually 6x and for 45-60 min
20) --Thanks for participating! This is all for fun and getting to know the community, absolutely no judging and no use other than that. Feel free to add my support group, I'll add you back! :)

Maintaining Survey! Aug 07 2012

Original Post by mochacafe9874:

I haven't exactly been confused on how to maintain, but when it comes to certain things, like counting calories, and how many times I can eat a slice of pizza a month, or at a restaurant, i'm kind of at a loss. I want to lead a healthy life style, but not be the party pooper eating a PB and banana sandwich in the bathroom while everyone is having pizza... sooo;

What are your stats? Age?- 20 years old, 5' 3.5", 108-9ish pounds

How active are you currently?- moderately active

How much do you maintain on (or thereabout)?- About 1800-2400 calories (can vary quite a bit but probably usually falls in the middle of this range at about 2100). Although I just started waitressing and have found myself getting hungry on this amount and probably need more

Do you count calories?- No

Do you intuitively eat?- No

How long have you been maintaining your weight?- Over 8 months, for the most part (when I exercise, it goes up a few pounds, when I don't, I lose that weight, probably due to muscle gain/loss and water retention)

Would you say you've been successful?- Yes

How many times a week do you exercise?- Zero at the moment due to an injury

How intense are your exercise sessions?- n/a

Does your exercise routine vary? Or is it the same each week?- n/a

Are you training for a sport? Or exercising for health?- When I do exercise its usually for health and running for fun

How many times a month do you go out to eat?- No set amount of times, basically whenever I feel like it or someone invites me out

When you go out to eat, do you keep health and macros and calories in mind, or do you just say "screw it" and get what you want?- I follow a meal plan so I get certain exchanges in, but that's all really flexible and I get what I want within that

Do you have a cheat meal? Cheat day? How does it work for you?- I don't even consider things "cheating".  I eat what I feel like. If that means a burger and fries then that's fine. If I want pizza the next day that's okay too. No set allowed "cheats" per day or week. It's all just food.

Do you eat significantly more on cheat days?- I eat pretty much the same amount of food no matter what I eat during the day

Do you get dessert when you go out to eat?- If something looks good then yes. If not I might have something at home

If you don't have a cheat day, and take a more moderate approach, How many times a week on average do you eat "junk food" (ex, pizza, mac n cheese, etc)?- No idea, I don't keep track. It varies a lot. Sometimes I might not have junk food all week, other times I might have it multiple times for a few days in a row.

If you don't have a cheat day, and take a more moderate approach, How many times a week do you eat sweets on average?-  Every day. I have a dessert exchange on my meal plan

Any other advice for this struggling maintainer?- It says on your profile you've struggled with a restrictive eating disorder and, as someone who's in recovery from one, I definitely think you need to not worry so much about exactly how many times you can allow yourself to have "junk food". It's so much easier and less stressful when no foods are off limits, no matter what you already ate that day or the week before. Also, your young and active so I could see you maintaining on more calories, especially since you said you might be losing.

Thanks in advance! I'm currently losing (i think... i might be maintaining) on 2200-2400-ish, exercising 5-6 (currently 6) days a week, running around 30 miles weekly, bootcamp class once a week, and do weights 2x/week in addition.
