I have read a lot about over the counter sleep medicines and also have friends with experience of them- they can be worse for you (in terms of dependence and side effects) than prescription medicines.

I would avoid that option if possible! (just my opinion)

I had some issues myself which have almost completely gone away now that I go running- I think that knackers me out so much that I can't help but fall asleep! I read up on good sleep hygiene. Try this link:

Good luck!

I've used it many times, from the Uk, never had any problems. It can take a while but it isn't difficult to do and always gets me my money back when needed. Hope it works out or you!

I think the thing is that calorie counting is not a 'diet plan' like all the other things (weight watchers, atkins etc...) it is just about eating less than you burn. So in theory yes you can eat all the bad stuff you want but as long as it is less than you burn. BUT, you will not be healthy that way.

You need to eat a balanced diet (I say 'diet' as in what you actually eat, not a way of losing weight) with plenty of lean meats/ proteins, fruits and vegetables etc... this way your body will get everything it needs.

It is never really a good idea to cut things out completely. Have a treat now and again or you will really miss the stuff and may end up having a giant splurge instead!

Wow, a simple "on your left" would have sufficed. If anyone ever said "Get out of my way" they would get an elbow in the ribs.

I did the a 50k on Saturday. It’s my last long run before my 100k and now I can taper. I had no specific goals for this race other than to get a solid training run in, test out some things and come out of it in one piece. I’d never run in this particular park before so that was a nice change of pace. But, man, was it hot. 60 degrees at 6am and 90 when I finished. Normal training weather for me is in the 60s so this was a challenge. There was a lot of exposure on the course too. Coverage from trees happened mostly in the early part of the race so there was plenty of time spent baking in the sun.

I was actually surprise at how well I did with the heat. Yes, it was uncomfortable but I was keeping up on my nutrition and hydration fine and my energy levels stayed pretty consistent. I started passing people I’d been leap frogging all day and the sharp rollers found in the last few miles were doing a number on people who’d blown their quads while I was still able to run down them. I also stayed consistent in motoring the ups which never devolved into a trudge which could have easily happened for me with the heat. I’m super happy about that.

It was a challenging course (terrain and heat), great aid stations, awesome race swag (30th anniversary for this race so some extra special goodies) and stellar BBQ at the end.

Bloody hell... 50k.... ouch! Well done Cool

Thanks! I thought it was a bit off hand to be honest. I just ran around the other people as I was finishing but it was downhill so maybe she wasn't able to manoeuvre properly... Anyway, I had a great race so it didn't bother me too much!

Also, is it normal for someone to shout 'get out my way' as we are all running to the finish line? I thought it was quite rude from her seeing as I was running as fast as I could (sprinting) seeing as it was to get to the finish line and there was no one either side of me so they could have just gone past me rather than throw me off and make me move out the way! Is that normal for races or was that someone being a bit rude and big for their boots?

I think this has to be one of the most inappropriate, insensitive and just plain ludicrous comments I've ever read on here! Pollyalice, I've seen you say some silly things but, really???

Well, I completed my first 10k race yesterday. It was the Marwell zoo 10k and fun run and was a fundraiser for my local zoo. I was a bit worried because it was very hilly and everyone said I would take longer than I do normally. I was hoping to get 60 minutes but then when I heard how tough it was I upped my expectations to under 65 minutes!

However.... I smashed it and got a PR!!! I did it in 57:29 (chip to chip time). I'm not liking my gun to chip time because it took me 20 seconds to get to the actual start line due to the number of runners so I'm sticking with the official chip to chip time. My stats were:

494/ 917 runners overall
71/ 192 runners in my category (sf- female, 20-35)

My time of 57:29 is only 2 seconds faster than my previous best but I still got my PR! I am so proud of myself. It was a very tough race due to the huge hills but I somehow managed to run really fast for the last 1.5 miles and did a lot of overtaking! I didn't need to walk at all but I was surprised at how many people do walk. Not that I have an issue with that, but for me personally, I will not walk, I just drop my speed down a bit and struggle on.

I have another 10k planned for 4 weeks time. This one is a flatter race so I may even end up faster, who knows!

My first 5k race was a 30:38 but my best for a 5k (not race) is 27:08. These are outside times and not treadmill. 30 is a great goal I believe.

... when you realize?

That your great idea is a big mistake.

Yours is similar to my awkward moment when my lodger told me you can see right in the bedroom window when the light is on.... I live on a main road, WITH a bus stop opposite the bedroom.... I thought because I had blinds no one could see in but apparently the way they were slanted meant you could see in from road level. I wondered what was so funny about my road... everytime i was getting changed after a shower I could hear giggling from the bus stop Embarassed It was a terribly awkward moment when he told me that.

Managed to miss the rest of this thread last night but just felt I should come in to say I was not implying that anyone on here was being disrespectful by the way. (Rain bows!!) Facebook, BBC News, Observers News and all the other news sites I read was just full of people saying nasty things- not about her politics (I get why people detested her) but about her and her death.

I'm struggling with a difficult family death at the moment so maybe that is why I focus on the 'there are always others worse off' thing. Maybe my mind is just skewed a weeny bit and I'm being too sensitive about peoples nasty reactions to a death.

Well I've booked my first 10k now. It's on the 12th May at the zoo I said about. (well starts and finishes at the zoo)

I'm looking forward to it! Training is really only 2-4 shorter runs (3-4 miles) and 1 longer run (6-6.5mi) per week. I'd like to up the distance of the shorter runs and then the longer run but my partner runs with me on the shorter ones and he won't do much more :/

luckyK - Depends on what picture you are looking at.

You are lucky having dental, I guess the fact that you mentioned it means you are NHS dental?

If so you are very lucky, I know folk who have waited a very long time, I for one have been living where I am for 6-7 years and I am still trying to get NHS dental.

I certainly won't mourn for her, she has family to do that, oh and lets not forget the Queen will attend, plus some VIP's from overseas ... and lets also not forget the State is paying for it.

If she could afford to stay at the Ritz, you'd think she could afford to pay for her own damn funeral.

I Loathed her when she was in power ... her death has not changed that.

Yeh, I have NHS but I have lived in the South my whole life so I've had the same dentist for over 30 years.

I just feel sometimes that people moan too much about our lives. There are always others worse off than ourselves. The UK has deteriorated, of course, you can't deny that, but we have pretty cushty lives compared to others out there.

And RIP Mrs Thatcher. Whether you loved or loathed her, she is still someones mother, family member, friend.... and any loss of life is sad and should be mourned and not rejoiced in.

My thoughts exactly! I find it incredibly disrespectful how many negative comments I've seen; some that celebrate her dealth.

I haven't read any rejoicing comments here yet to be fair... but my FB page is full of them! I find it sad that people can be so horrible.

She ended her days living at the Ritz she did well out of us from her humble beginnings.

Sadly her predecessors have learnt nothing from the mess she made of this country, and they continue to make sure that only the very rich are catered for.

I'm not very rich, in fact I'm pretty low paid, and I'm very well catered for! I'm comfortable, have certain luxuries, I work, have health care, dental care and a fairly safe place to live. I would say this country isn't as much of a mess as some people think it is. It's not perfect by any means, but I think some people (NOT aimed personally at you Rain bows!!) do make more of a meal of it than others.

I have just done my first 5k a few weeks ago. I very much enjoyed it and want to do more races now!! I have the following schedules for this year. I'm in the UK by the way so these are local races.

May 12th- Marwell Zoo 10k fund raiser (this one is 'hilly' apparently which makes me nervous!)

June 23rd- Somerley 10k

July 14th- Race for Life (cancer research, women only) Southampton 10k

October 27th- Bupa Great South Run 10 Miles (This is only "possible". Not sure if I will be able to do it!)

I think the 10k is a good distance for me. I manage normally about 58-59 minutes when I'm out running and I'm pretty happy with my times right now.

Not sure if I'll be able to manage a 10 miler, it's also right after I get back from 2 weeks in mexico so I'm kind of expecting to be a lot heavier about then.... I'll see closer to the time!

Yeah, got to go to the doctors first off!

But it can likely be a lack of fat as well as the protein. Fat is super important for hair and skin. If you are lacking in fat and protein that wouldn't be so great. Be sure to tell the doctor everything.

I think I am going to 'borrow' my partners daughters dog. He is a pug (cross with a french bulldog) but for some reason he loves to run! My partner took him out for a run the other day and he said he was brilliant but made him run too fast! He ran 2 miles with him and the poor puppy drank a full bowl of water when he got back. Pugs don't normally like running but this one does!!

I think i may have to take the boy out and have a little run with him. It sounds like fun. He thinks you're playing and is either chasing you or thinks you're chasing him. I will try it and report back Laughing
