Breakfast: whole wheat toast with butter, scrambled eggs, bacon, sausage. Coffee with sugar and cream
Lunch: Life brand cranberries/nuts/seeds granola bars
Dinner: Whole wheat pita bread with peanut butter, banana, hot chocolate
After dinner: Coffee-flavored yogurt (delicious and creamy and free of artificial sweeteners, although not calories); hard boiled eggs
Considering the lack of vegetables, it's a good thing I took a multivitamin + calcium supplement + vitamin D supplements before going to bed. |

I'm back after a three week hiatus in which I ate a lot, bounced back up to 141(!) briefly, and didn't count calories. I'm still not really counting calories at the moment because it was making me mental, but I'm trying to eat small portions and only eat when I'm hungry. I've also started taking the supplement 5-htp - has anyone else taken this? It boosts the serotonin levels in ones brain, so it's good for depression and anxiety issues, but it may also be helpful for weight loss. I noticed last week that I felt full much faster while taking 5-htp, and I think it's been helping me eat less. I'm not positive that this is the case, and there aren't a lot of studies out there regarding 5-htp and weight loss, but the few studies that do exist show a correlation between the two.
So anyway, my stats this week are: Height: 5'4 SW: 142.8 LW: 134.4 CW: 134.6 GW: 120 |

| Weight Loss | What do you love now that you have lost "X" pounds? | Aug 22 2010 05:00 (UTC) |

I love that I can see the beginnings of my hipbones. Ditto my lovely collarbones. My face and facial structure is much more defined that it was 30 pounds ago. I feel attractive and desirable. I'm happy with how I look. I have so much more energy and feel motivated to start trying to run. I can consistently wear a size 8! And a size medium! And very occasionally a size small or size 6! Clothing stores always have those sizes. Before I started trying to lose weight, I didn't exercise. Now I do, and I actually enjoy it! |

How's the weekend treating everyone so far? I worked out at the gym today (excellent) and then went for brunch and had coffee, a deep-fried doughnut type thing (it came as a free appetizer! I couldn't resist!), and a entree loaded with hashbrowns, scrambled eggs, vegetarian sausage, buttered toast, salsa, watermelon, and cheese. ....yes, I know. So consequently, that was my meal for the day (save for my pre-workout snack). I was so stuffed upon leaving that I'm pretty sure the brunch calorie total equals at least 1400 calories, if not more, and probably several days worth of cholesterol. I had lots of water and something very light for dinner, and I'll have a sensible breakfast tomorrow. ..on the plus side I haven't had any alcohol this week? At least I've got that going for me? |

That's awesome! Are you going by percentage of weight lost, or number of pounds? When did the competition start? I'm doing something similar on facebook - everyone puts in $25, and the 2 people who lose the highest percentage of their weight get to split the money. We've been weighing in each week, and the woman who organized the competition has been posting a spreadsheet each week so that we can see how we're doing compared to everyone else. I find that when I need motivation, it's helpful to remind myself of all the things I could buy with the winnings! It helps make the calorie counting and daily workouts less painful. If you won, what would you do with the winnings? |

Welcome, flutterbykisses25, and good luck!
My stats this week: Height: 5'4 SW: 142.8 LW: 136.6 CW: 135.8 GW: 120
I lost just under a pound. Not amazing, but every .8 of a pound still counts! |

Ugh, this hasn't been such a good week food-wise. I went out for dinner most days of the week, which made it difficult to track calories. I haven't stuffed myself or binged at all, but I think I've been eating closer to maintenance, rather than having a deficit. My next weigh-in for my weight-loss competition is tomorrow morning, and I think I'm going to be up a couple pounds from last week. Good luck to all the other smokers out there! I know it's really hard to quit. I'm trying to quit too, actually, but I'm using nicorette - once I wean myself off them and have no nicotine at all in my system it'll be harder. |

| Weight Loss | How do I track my calories on days that I eat out or at a friend's house? | Aug 12 2010 17:09 (UTC) |

If I'm eating someplace where I can't track calories, I a) try to order the healthiest looking option, and b) focus on hunger cues and fullness cues. I try to eat slowly so that my stomach will have time to let me know when it's no longer hungry, and I try to eat until I'm no longer hungry, but I'm not stuffed or overly full.
If I know ahead of time that I'm going to be eating out, I'll also try to save calories. Last weekend I went to a friends birthday party at a mexican restaurant, and I ate very lightly during the day, ordered one of the healthier looking options for dinner (corn tacos with rice, beans, salad, and lots of veggies), skipped dessert (chocolate mousse with cinnamon corn chips), and had three rum and diet cokes because I felt that I had left space in my calorie budget for it. :) I managed to lose weight that week using this strategy. |

Yay! Today's weigh-in was excellent. I think eating out over the weekend actually helped, as the extra/different calories shocked my body into losing more weight. Starting weight: 142.8 Current weight: 136.6 (sweet, sweet success) Goal weight: 120 I work out at Curves every day, and I'm trying to do some jump roping and/or hula hooping when I'm done with my workout. My back has been hurting lately, though, so I think I probably need to start doing lower impact workouts - all the jumping around is making my body hate me. |

Congrats! It's always encouraging when the scale goes down :) Does anyone else find that when you eat more than usual after you've been in a calorie deficit for awhile, your weight will actually suddenly drop the next day? I had two glasses of wine and half a cupcake yesterday evening, and my scale reported a 2 pound loss the next morning. I'm just hoping that my 3 rum and diet cokes from tonight won't screw me over weight-wise in the morning. Hopefully it'll be balanced out by the fact that I had a tiny breakfast and lunch, ordered a reasonable dinner (corn tacos with black beans, rice, goat cheese, and lots of veggies), and skipped the chocolate mousse that my friends had for dessert.
How's everyone else doing, especially given it's the weekend?

I'd like to join! I'm actually doing a weight loss competition with a friend at the moment, and I'm trying to lose 20 pounds. I lost 30 pounds last year, and then lost motivation and gained a bit back, so now I'm trying to lose weight again and get to my goal weight. Stats: 23 5'4" Starting weight: 142 (down from 165 last year) Current weight: 140 Goal weight: 120 |

You aren't going to get a lot of positive responses on this board, as people tend to be very hardcore about not eating less than 1200 calories a day. That said, eating lots of fruits and vegetables and water is really healthy, and I think what you're doing is okay as long as you listen to your body and don't do it for too long. Good luck! I know I feel much healthier when I eat vegan and unprocessed. Also, have you thought about adding some sprouts to your salad? They're yummy and have lots of nutrients. |

| Weight Loss | Eating 1000 Calories | Aug 06 2010 05:55 (UTC) |

Yes, people *can* lose weight by eating only 1000 calorie and working out every day. That said, it's unhealthy, will slow your metabolism down if you follow the diet for a long time, and will make you ravenous and likely to give up and start binging on everything in site. When I was a teenage and didn't know any better I'd try to restrict myself to 900 or 1000 calories a day - and I usually made it three days or so before I was starving and gorged myself on anything I could find. I don't know your stats, but 1600 calories a day sounds like a sensible amount to eat if you want to lose weight. You said in your profile that you want to lose eighty pounds, and that'll take some time. I know I couldn't eat only 1000 calories a day until I lost eighty pounds - it'd make me really grumpy, I wouldn't have any energy to workout, I'd lose muscle, and I'd probably give up after a couple weeks. In any case, 1200 calories a day is the absolute minimum a sedentary woman should eat if she wants to lose weight - not 1000. So in short - 1600 calories a day sounds like an effective and sensible way to lose weight! 1000 calories a day does not!

| Weight Loss | What is the best solid/chewy/chunchy low-calorie filler? | Aug 03 2010 18:58 (UTC) |

If you have any asian grocery stores in your area, look for shirataki noodles. They're calorie free (or 20 calories if they have tofu added to them), and are a great filler to add to soups. I'd suggest rinsing them well and perhaps even putting them in boiling water for a couple minutes before adding them to your soup, because they can have kind of a weird taste otherwise.
I also second the recommendation for bags of frozen vegetables! Super convenient, and cuts way down on prep. |

| Weight Loss | Antidepressants...help? | Aug 02 2010 05:28 (UTC) |

I don't have any advice as to how to lose weight while on Prozac, especially given that you're eating below your burn and still not losing weight. However, not all antidepressants have that effect - I was on Celexa for a year, and managed to lose 30 pounds while on it. Through consistent calorie counting and exercise, I might add, not through the Celexa itself. Have you talked to your doctor about the weight gain and asked if there's another antidepressant that you might try? |

| Weight Loss | Fastest way to flush sodium out of my body?! | Aug 02 2010 01:09 (UTC) |

Okay, what if had eaten a lot more sodium than that in one pickle spear? I've also got a weigh-in tomorrow, but I had lunch at a stiry-fry place and consumed a lot of soy sauce. What's the best way to get rid of the sodium quickly? Is that possible? |
