Foods Why doesn't anyone warn you about protein gas?! Feb 04 2011

Original Post by avboston:

Beans + Spinach = Fiber. Increasing your fiber quickly can throw your digestive system into a gassy and upset system. Are you sure it's the protein that was giving you gas?

She says in her post that they've been a part of her diet for a long time, so clearly it isn't a sudden increase in fiber.

Vegetarian Are Humans Supposed To Be Vegetarian? Nov 17 2010

Agreed. And it bothers me that we have so many meat-eaters posting in our forum, advocating omnivorous eating.

Seriously, people? This is the vegetarian forum. Let us have some space. If you're an omni who wants to post in here with vegetarian recipes or vegetarian love or something, go for it. But don't post in here about eating meat and how wonderful you think it is. You can do that in the lounge or somewhere.

Foods Splenda & recipe tool? Sep 16 2010

When you add Splenda into a recipe, I think the CC tool counts it as the Splenda BLEND, which is a blend of granulated Splenda and sugar made particularly for stuff like baking.

You should be aware, however, that Splenda does have calories. A little packet of Splenda (or a serving of granulated Splenda) has around 4 calories.

If it's under 5, the manufacturers are legally allowed to call it "0 calories."

Foods What's the deal with falafel? Aug 30 2010

Awwwwww, man, I LOVE falafel. I made some the other day because my boyfriend requested it ... so delicious!

But yeah, falafel is fried, so that obviously reduces the healthiness factor. If you make homemade falafel, you can try baking it, though I've heard that doing so definitely alters the texture. But hey, baked falafel vs. no falafel ... I bet the baked would win!

(btw, I made falafel loosely following this recipe: http://allrecipes.com/Recipe/Seans-Falafel-an d-Cucumber-Sauce/Detail.aspx --- I used flour instead of breadcrumbs, left the oil out of the recipe intentionally --- they get enough oil when you fry them! --- and accidentally ommited the baking powder. But it was really yummy! Use a different recipe for the yogurt sauce, though ... a bonafide tzatziki recipe would be the best [that's what I made]).

I <3 kimchi! But not the kind with fish paste in it, coz I'm vegetarian. But the Meijer near where I live has a tasty one that is ... wait for it ... vegetarian! So that makes me happy.

I've also had a couple of Korean roommates, and I really liked their kimchi pancakes.

And I got to agree ... sriracha is the best! I have a BIG bottle of it in my fridge :-)

Oh, and I love seaweed too! Yum.

one cup is 8 ounces. that is standard so when something says "one cup" then you know that means 8 ounces. YOu can add or subtract from there. if you add four ounces (or a half a cup) that is twelve ounces, if you subtract four ounces you now have just a half cup.

But I agree with cherry buy a scale! it really does make it easier and you can be "more" accurate.

That's a fluid ounce, though, not a weight ounce. It's a measure of volume. A "weight" ounce is measure of mass, and is different.

100 g is equal to 3.512 oz, but that doesn't mean you can take just under a half-cup (because while that's 4 oz., it's 4 FLUID OUNCES, which is different) of something and call it 100 g, because then you're converting between mass and volume, which really doesn't work.

Foods ... and what would you like on your pizza? Aug 08 2010

I've never had an alfredo pizza! Maybe I should try it sometime... I've had normal tomato sauce, pesto used as the sauce, and barbecue sauce pizza, but never alfredo. I might have to change that sometime soon! :-)

My ultimate pizza is: sauce (or maybe half sauce-half pesto), cheese, mushrooms, olives, tomato slices, artichoke hearts, zucchini, and of course basil!

... And I agree with RANDOMV3... I really don't think people look at fish and think, aw poor thing, I cannot eat you.

ha, that's not at all what I said or what I think.

I for one look at fish and think, aw poor thing, I cannot eat you.  haha.

I do too. In fact, fishing kickstarted my vegetarianism... my dad took me fishing last summer, and it was so traumatizing to see (a) the poor little live bait fishies having hooks jabbed through their brains and (b) the yellowfin/yellowtain tuna's throats being ripped out be the gaff and then they just flap around and the deck until their life and blood completely flows away. It was really traumatizing. And then that got me thinking about eating animals in general, and how awful slaughter is. So yeah, vegetarian now and very happy!

Well, I've never had a flavored one, so I'll go with CRUNCHY, baby! Buuuuuut I have had toast with pb and then added chocolate to it, and that was scrumptious. So choco PB will be my second choice.

BAGELS: Sweet ones (blueberry, choco chip, etc.), savory ones (everything, onion, etc.), or plain? And if you choose sweet or savory, which actual flavor is your favorite?

Breakfast: Plain yogurt and plums

Snack: Banana bread

Lunch: Veggies with hummus

Snack: Bran muffin

Dinner: Tofu sticks coated with cornmeal and panfried, and then eaten dipped in barbecue sauce! This is definitely something I should make more often.

It was a good day for me! Good calorie amounts and tasty foods. Yay! :-)

Hey chicas,

I missed the Friday weigh-in (was really busy and didn't have  time to go to the gym, which is the only place I have access to a scale), which means I do have to go for a Monday weigh-in. Sigh. Well, I'll just have to drag my butt down there after work, and then I'll report in!

Allergy Remedies
Is It Possible to Go Natural?
The side effects of allergy medications keep some people from using them. Natural remedies can be a great alternative, but some are more effective than others.
