Rosey - Everyone here has given you great ideas and I totally agree with their comments but,  I've been where you're at and I sense you're doing a lot of struggling and perhaps a little overwhelmed at times?

Here's my suggestion.  It worked great to get me in the habit of exercising regularly, it's great cardio and a good beginning for strength training.  Ever heard of Leslie Sansone's "Walk Away the Pounds"?  I know, I know, it sounds cheesy but it is truly a great way to build up your stamina, tone your arms and lower body, and boost your confidence.  She integrates light weights along with your own body weight as excellent resistance for most of the routine.  You can do it in your own living room if you're self-consious like I was.  Trust me...after 30 days you'll feel great, have more confidence, and you'll notice some great changes in your body!

Cool!  My way of hitting milestones!  I've always used the "breaking a 10" method for motivation.  It worked for me several years ago when I went from 235 to 146 - and it's been working so far this time around going from 171 to 157. (Broke two 10's so far!)

Currently 157.4

I've just recently taken up running again after giving it up 2 years ago.

Currently I run every other day and it's typically a 3 mile run and average 9.5 min/mile.

I plan on building back up to my distance/time/speed of 2 years ago, 4 - 5 miles 5X/week with an average 8.5 min/mile.

Thanks, Too!  I'm trying.

Bonna - Good luck with the "diet holiday" for the 4th.  You really need to do it.  Life is more than one continuous diet and you deserve a mini break.  Enjoy the food!

We're not participating in any cookouts this year.  Hubby is still not able to swallow.  I'll miss the burgers and potato salad for sure.  Living out in the boonies is great - we'll sit in lawn chairs and watch all the fireworks everyone in a 5 miles radius is shooting off!

I feel so incredibly guilty - you gals work your tails off, really committed to exercise, and I can't seem to get that part of my plan together.  Someone needs to kick me in the rear!

I used to be a committed runner and thought I'd get back into it - so Wednesday I went out and ran almost 4 miles.  I had to run 1/2 mile and then walk a tenth - a good indication that I haven't done it for quite a while.  **Baby Steps...Baby Steps...don't get discouraged!**

Anyway, water isn't the problem.  I've been averaging 64 oz./day.

Fudgesicles - Some are Low Fat, Fat Free, or Sugar Free.  Check the label.
Oreo Chips - in the convenient 100 calorie packs.

These are in my chocolate aresenal.  I'm VERY careful with them though - chocolate is a binge food with me.  Unless I'm totally in control a taste of chocolate can send me into a really bad binge.

Bonna - so sorry you're hurting!  It's so easy to over do it, isn't it?  When I started running 6 years ago I was the same way.  I enjoyed the fact that I was keeping up a certain running schedule and instead of listening to my body when I started to feel twinges I kept running and ended up with knees so sore and swollen it was misery to even walk.

What exactly is a "Bean" - exercise equipment?

Bonna - I'm with Nancy...confused!  Are we suppose to report daily on our exercise and water intake?  Makes sense if we are, keeps us accountable each day.

Monday - 50 oz water; 45 min heavy yardwork
Tuesday - 46 oz water; 1.5 hour mowing

It's raining here today so I feel a lazy day coming on! EEeek!

I'm up for learning Pilates too!  Does anyone know of a home video version that's worth a hoot?

I've done a little yoga and also Tai Chi but that's more of an "exercise my mental demons" type of thing, you know, stress buster.

Anyone familiar with Callanetics?  It's been several years since I've done that but it's outstanding for core and your booty.  It's a routine with slow, deliberate movements, lengthening muscles, toning, etc.  There is nothing aerobic about it.  I've talked myself into it - I loaned it to my daughter a couple of years ago so I'm getting it back and I think I'll just start doing it again!  Hee-Hee ;-)

You girls are the greatest!  I spend so much time nodding my head in agreement with what everyone writes that I feel like a bobble-head doll!

Donna - you're a transplant to Kansas?  Me too!  I've been here about 10 years now.  I bet it was quite a culture shock for you to move here.  I'm from Iowa so other than the difference in the weather it's still the midwest!

cjmitzi - Welcome!  I had my gallbladder removed years ago, when I was 16, due to stones.  The only advice I have about diet is to stay far - far away from anything greasy or fatty.  It will tear you up!  To this day I'm not able to eat but very small amounts of most pork because of that.

Here's where I'm at:

Weight: 159.8

Water: 64 oz

Exercise: Currently I'm not following anything structured.  I do however spend 4 - 6 hours outdoors 3 or 4 days a week maintaining our property, which consists of 10 acres of woods with over 2 miles of trails.  Everything from mowing to cutting and hauling wood.  My calorie expenditure on these days is usually between 3500 - 4000!

My husband has just finished chemo/radiation treatments so it's been a one woman show around here since late March.

Laura - Hang in there!  I was where you are at.  I lost 75 pounds in my early 40's.  It's definitely not easy but determination kept me going.  I had been heavy since the age of 8 with small windows of time where I'd lost a considerable amount of weight but for short periods of time.  I'm the yo-yo queen!  At 15 I lost 50 pounds over the summer break.  I gained it back within 18 months.  I lost the same 30 pounds 3 different times through my 20's.  I gave up in my 30's and my weight ballooned to over 230 pounds.  Something just clicked for me when I turned 40.  I watched my obese mother suffer with high blood pressure, being a diabetic, and arthritis in her hips so bad she couldn't get out of a chair without help.  I did not want to be like her in my 60's.

When I lost the weight I kept it off for over 5 years without "swinging" more than 4 or 5 pounds.  I enforced my personal rule of 5 pounds.  If I crept up I dieted back down but for the most part I'd changed my eating habits and it wasn't an issue to maintain.  Sadly, I've gone through some major life changes the past couple of years and have not given myself the same level of care so my weight crept back up.  I've gained 25 pounds in less than 2 years.

I guess the point I'm trying to make is that you have to make your health and well-being a priority.  Once you make up your mind to lose the weight and learn to fight the negative self-talk you'll win the battle.  Keep your end goal in mind at all times.  Set up mini-goals and celebrate them when you get there.  Mine was "breaking a 10", like slipping out of the 160's to the 150's.  It makes the whole process less overwhelming.

Good luck!

I dropped out of the rat race 2 years ago and started a tee shirt printing business with one of my daughters.  It's a far cry from my usual occupation of accounting...just what I needed!

I know with me, independent as a woman can possibly be, not having my own money to spend however I wanted just killed me.  I had a tidy sum in my personal savings when I quit working in public but it didn't take long to spend it getting the tee shirt business off the ground.  Then you have a lag and operate in the red for a while until the business is built up enough to support itself and pay a profit.

It's just a suggestion but you might want to check into being a "Virtual Assistant".  There are a lot of consultants out there that are one man shows that don't have need for a full time assistant and are willing to pay decent money for someone to return phone calls, make appointments, send invoices, etc. on a part-time work from home basis.  Some other assistants I know of have earned up to $25/hour for 2 or 3 hours a day.  The rest of the day can be devoted to whatever you decide to do for the rest of your life!

Personally, I worked for a MAC consultant for 9 months, putting in 10-12 hours a week.  The tee shirt business had grown enough by then that I was comfortable giving up that income.

Dr. Pamela Peeke has an excellent book out titled "Body-For-Life for Women" that addresses the issue of midlife changes for 40+ women.  She explains what happens and why and has several women as examples and how they beat these issues.  Pretty informative read!

Excellent thread!  It's always stimulating to read what people believe to be true in their own situation for weight gain or not being able to lose or keep weight off.  Very insightful, both from a scientific standpoint and an emotional one.

I totally agree with the genetics/evolution argument.  And when you add the element of stress and the damands of today's lifestyle it seems we're all doomed to obesity, doesn't it?  I don't agree with lazy or stupid, at least not in the direct sense.  It's just human nature to take the easy way out - that doesn't make one lazy.  Misinformed or uninformed is more accurate than stupid.

I'm a firm believer in getting your mind around an idea or goal and knowing it is going to happen.  I've always found what works for me is to accept that I have certain faults, acknowledge what I believe to be the true reason for those faults and then tell myself I can overcome xyz by doing abc, and then taking it a step farther by outlining the rewards of doing abc and the consequence of sticking with xyz.  People avoid pain at all costs.  Attach the emotional pain of the excess weight to lack of action and then believe it...you'll definitely lose weight!

Hi Everyone!
Just a couple of quick responses to recent posts.

Gorda - You wondered about fasting...I used an ocassional fast as a way to break a plateau when I dieted and kept the weight off for over 5 years.  It was during the last 15 pounds and only after a 2 week period of not losing anything at all.  I would do clear liquids only for a weekend, no longer.  Broths, Sugar Free Jello, Tea, Coffee, and lots of water.  I would typically drop 2 pounds over the weekend and then gain it right back.  That was o.k. though because it would break the plateau and I'd continue to lose at an acceptable rate for several weeks again.

DEH - Tandem bike - what a great idea!

Bonna - Breaking 160's - I'm right there with you!  In the past, 160 was always my sticking point.  I'm happy to say that I broke that "10" this morning weighing in at 159.8, Yippee!  I mark milestones in 10 pound increments.  I broke 170 easily after starting at 171.  I just broke the 160 mark and am now focused on 150.  Achieving those 10 pounds goals makes dieting seem less daunting.

Drieser - Fidgeting - I read an article quite a while back that verifies what you're saying.  People that fidget lose weight quicker than others.  If I remember correctly it said a mild case of the fidgets would typically burn an average of 300 calories a day.  Fidget away!

One thing?  For me it definitely eating more natural food - meaning staying completely away from processed foods, white flour, and sugar.

Once you get into the habit of staying away from these things it's amazing how nasty they taste when you try to re-introduce them to your diet.  The first bite of pizza I had after eating clean for 3 months tasted like what I would imagine a spoonful of Crisco would taste like.  Yuck!  I wish I would have listened to my body instead of thinking I had to eat what everyone else ate.

My backsliding is due to convenience foods.  I've learned a valuable lesson this time around.  I don't plan to bring those foods back into my life once I get my tastebuds retrained.

Not All Processed Foods Are Created Equal
Fact: a diet containing whole, fresh fruits and vegetables is one of the best for a healthy mind and body. Although true, it can be hard to keep food fresh at home for longer periods of time, and if you have no time to shop every few days, boxed and canned foods become appealing. We often hear about heavily processed frozen dinners and processed foods worth avoiding, but there are minimally processed foods that do pack a lot of nutrition and may be worth having in the fridge or cupboard.
