I have a similar (I think) relationship with my sister. She makes six figures, and I certainly don't. It's been odd seeing her becoming affluent, seeing how she handles her money, and how it's changed her. I get odd feelings of discomfort and jealousy when she indulges, buying a new car or a new house. I think some of my response is based on my fear that our relationship has become unbalanced. Her house is big enough to accomodate me as a guest, while I feel awkward hosting her, so our relationship exists on her turf. I guess I feel that, while my life is definitely good enough for me, it's not good enough for her, and I don't really know how to react to that. She hasn't expressed or implied any of these issues; they're all just in my head. I guess some of the challenge is just mourning the kind of closeness we shared when we had more similar lifestyles. In other ways, we're closer now that we're two totally different people who still choose to love and support each other. |

In the last three years, I've lost almost 120 pounds, and I have been eating butter pretty much every day the whole time. It's my condiment of choice. |

I got through the insane last term of my masters without frozen food. I didn't really have time to cook, so I just kept the house stocked with easy things I could grab and eat, like cottage cheese, raw veggies, nuts and nut butters, portable fruit, cheese, beans, and hard boiled eggs. Every once in a while, I'd make a real meal, but I was working, taking 15 credits, and doing all the reading and other work for my comprehensive exams. |

From my experience, when I get bored with food, it means I'm not being creative enough with herbs and spices. You can eat pretty basic, cheap foods and make them really interesting with seasoning. |

I love BRM! I used to live in Portland, about 20 minutes from the mill and restaurant. The best part of the store is the bulk section, where you can buy little bits of everything to try them out before you buy a whole bag. They've also made appearances at the Portland Farmers Market with samples, which was always super exciting for me. I love that they sell buttermilk powder and powdered eggs. I use them to make my own mixes for backpacking food. |

I'm definitely less hungry in the summer. I also tend to get more exercise, so I need to eat more than I do in the winter. I make up for it by drinking smoothies with nut butter and soy milk in them. They don't fill me up, but are a quick way to add 300 calories into my day, even if I'm not hungry. |

Yep, the calories listed are the total calories from fat, carbohydrates, protein, and anything else that's in there. |

I live in the pacific northwest, where we get about 8 months a year of rain. I'm a year-round walker. I love walking in the rain. You don't get hot, and there aren't nearly as many people clogging up the paths. Just embrace it. Also, on cloudy days, I try to make my food even more colorful than usual. This time of year, you can get fruits and veggies in every color of the rainbow. |

I'm a vegetarian, and I buy only used leather products. Sometimes leather shoes just work best for me, but I refuse to contribute to the leather/beef industry. I don't really see the need for leather purses, belts, and other things that don't take as much abuse as shoes. I figure that buying an occasional pair of leather shoes from Goodwill is just being part of the reuse cycle. That might be why that girl at the library was looking on ebay instead of in stores. |

I've never really had a hard time getting enough fruit. It's one of my favorite things. I try to keep the variety up by eating mostly fruit that's in season. I only eat apples in the fall and winter, because that's when they show up at the farmers' market. This time of year, it's all blueberries, strawberries, cherries and plums for me. I'm really looking forward to blackberry season. |

Of the frozen desserts I've seen at the store, sorbet is usually the lowest in calories. I've seen it as low as 80 calories for 1/2 cup. Honestly, I prefer just blending up frozen fruit myself. Pureed frozen pineapple and mango is one of my absolute favorite things. You could also add some yogurt to the mix and put it back in the freezer, stirring it every once in a while to keep it from turning rock solid. |

I'm not vegan, but I cook for a lot of vegans, so I've done a fair bit of product testing. You may already be aware, but vegan dairy substitutes tend to be just as high in fat as their dairy equivalents, and sometimes contain more fat. Just a little heads up. That being said, the best margarine I've found is Earth Balance. It's fine for toast and stuff like that. It can also be used with some success in baking, but it's better to start with a vegan recipe than to modify one with butter or margarine. Tofutti Better than Cream Cheese is pretty good, too. It's a little thicker than dairy cream cheese, so it spreads more easily if you let it sit out of the fridge for a little while before using it. When I need vegan yogurt for baking, I use WholeSoy brand. Soy Delicious ice cream is pretty awesome, and seems to be most popular in my circle of friends. Cheese is kind of the tough one. As said above, the vegan parmesan is pretty good. A lot of the other dairy-free cheeses aren't totally vegan, though. I've never really found a good one. When I want something to be cheesy, I usually make nutritional yeast cheese, which is kind of like a cheese sauce. It's good on pizza, grilled cheese sandwiches and macaroni. There are tons of recipes online for it. |

I'm coming into finals week, too. I always make sure to eat really nutrient-rich foods when I have a lot to do. Somehow I focus better when I'm getting plenty of fruits and veggies, healthy fats, and protein. When I just want to mindlessly munch on something while I'm studying or reading, I open up a bag of baby spinach. I can sit there and eat it like potato chips, and even if I finish a whole bag, it adds up to less than 50 calories. |

A lot of people have recommended walks, but I just wanted to add that, for me, walking up and back down a steep hill does the trick. It stretches out the muscles in my abdomen and my lower back, both of which tend to be really tight when I have cramps. |

There are also these things called dress shields that you wear under your clothes. They keep sweat from seeping through the fabric and making pit stains. You can find them online, at some drug stores, and often at fabric stores. |

Congratulations! I went for years with an ID that said 230, even though I was in the upper 200s. I was super excited when I hit 230 last year. Then I had to get a new ID, and I intentionally put a weight that was about 10 pounds lower than my current weight. I had missed the motivation. I just got down under that weight (190), so now I'm back under my ID weight. |

I learned the origins of the phrase, "It's cold enough to freeze the balls off a brass monkey." Apparently, it's a naval thing. A brass monkey is a large triangle made of brass that was used to hold cannon balls on ships (kind of like the triangle used in billiards). When it got really cold, the brass would shrink and push all of the cannon balls out the top. I had always thought it was about a brass statue of a monkey freezing his testicles off. |

Jealous! It sounds like you have an amazing summer in store. In terms of calories, I'd probably just use the very active setting for your activity level. It's meant for people who work in construction and other very physical jobs. You can always keep an eye on how your body responds and tweak your calories as you go. Enjoy! |
