Is it because you are thirsty?

You can have too much of a good thing

Polydipsia- extreme water consumption is one of the signs of diabetes.

It can also cause loss of electrolyes - hyponatremia

and can cause problems with organs such as the brain and kidneys.

You probably should discuss this with your doctor.

Glad someone pointed this out. Yes, excessive thirst is an indication of diabetes. and, yes, you can actually deplete your electrolite balance by drinking too much water, and has potential serious side effects, to include brain damage.

As K2catew says, Talk With Your Doctor! He or She will be able to provide you with advice specific to you.

I also second the idea of going to your local farmer's market.  The one near me actually gives you extra food money if you have food stamps- folks trade in their food stamp vouchers for farmer's market coins and get 150% of the value.  So, for every $1 of food stamp money they spend, they get $1.50 at the market.  Kinda cool.

Hope that helps!!  You are an inspiration!!

Wow that is so awesome!

Some healthy foods that are inexpensive are brown rice and dried beans. Canned beans aren't too pricey, but on a tight budget, dried is the way to go. Also, if you can buy frozen veggies in bulk, particularly when on sale, that can be helpful. Also, just a large container of old-fashioned oats is fairly inexpensive (much less expensive than individual packets!) and can be cooked rapidly in the microwave. You can season as you please and as your budget allows (a little sliced banana, some raisins, or maybe just some cinnamon - really, whatever you can afford/like).

As for quick prep, well, this is probably the opposite of "quick" but yet very hands-free: a crock-pot. I'm not sure if you have one (if not, I realize your budget might not allow it), but if you do, you can easily stick something in in the morning and by dinner time you're good to go. You can cook dried beans this way, meats, etc. A quick google would provide you with lots of ideas.

Sorry, I know this wasn't incredibly informative, but maybe it will at least help a bit.

FYI, some cannned beans can be extremely high in sodium, so be sure to read your labels!

You can put 1/4 steel cut oats in a good thermos with about 1 & 1/4 cup boiling water, shake, lay down, and leave over night. Pour out cooked oatmeal the next morning and add to it what you like - berries, peanutbutter, bananas. It's cheap and fast! Also, a WinCo just opened up in my neighborhood and i discovered you can grind your own peanutbutter there from unsalted peanuts, no additives,  and it's actually cheaper than pb off the shelf.. and so so much better!

Bread. I'm a grain junkie and love dense, hearty breads full of grains and seeds. I also love pumpernickle, rye, sourdough, basically any of the full flavor breads, i find most white bread to be pretty boring. i prefer the bread with nothing on it, never liked butter, even as a kid, and everytime i would find a margerine i liked the stores would stop carrying it, so i just gave up and started eating most things plain. Corn on the cob w/o butter or salt is just great, popcorn definately better w/o butter,  switched from plain potatos to yams or sweet potatos and absolutely love them roasted with nothing on them. Just can't give these things up in my diet...

I am 51 and I have been over weight for many years.  That is until my doctor wanted to put me on meds for Fibro and I decided to try natural first.  I am glad I did because It really helps my fibro.  I must do it as much as possible.  If I do not, I will feel it.  I agree with the Carbohydrates.  Also, when I go Gluten/dairy free I notice a difference. I also have a problem with not going to the bathroom.  I only go every three days and I have to drink coffee to go then.  I can not eat any more fiber.  I also take fiber supplements and I drink a lot of water.  I only drink water  and unsweetened almond milk.  I don't know how to get  by intestines moving.  I think I may have so much fiber that it is just bloating me.  I need to find out how to move it faster.

I have IBS with chronic constipation, and i can tell you, more fiber is not the answer!! I can actually cause myself more issues if i do not watch my fiber in-take and eat too much of the stuff. I love love love fruits and vegetables and nuts and grains, so I have to be mindful of my fiber intake. I also drink lots of water and get about 10 to 12 hours of exercise in a week (1.5 to 2hrs a day). None of this makes any difference in my situation. I've used otc super pre-biotics and enzymes, flax-meal, coconut oil... it'll work for awhile, and then stop. So I would say just be mindful of how much water you drink (drink lots! and watch your fiber intake). Good luck!

Hey,

Early morning runs are my favorite because the air is fresh and its pretty cool out. However one thing you will notice is that running on a treadmill is very different than running outside. a treadmill gives less resistance, and moves away from your feet while outside is solid still ground. Many people find it difficult to run outside when they have trained on a treadmill. To help this you can try to up the treadmills incline. Good luck and all the best.

funny no one else mentioned this. I started out running inside on a treadmill and when i took the run outside found it to be very different. I call treadmill running "assisted running" because it forces you to move your feet - either run or fall off! I also found it very different for a few reasons: 1 - I cannot run as long on my own as I can on my treadmill 2-I cannot run as fast on the road as I can on my treadmill. But i enjoy both. I live in the Phoenix valley where the summers here never cool off below 100 degrees and in my opinion it's worse than hell... so i tend to run indoors all summer, but i do so look forward to when i can be outside... i'm about a month away from having to run indoors exclusively... it's not just the heat, when you mix in the extreme dryness and horrid air polution,  and the fact that the summers are prone to nasty dirt storms (called Haboobs...) it's just too much for my lungs...

Well I am 13 and I am eating 500-700 calories a day and I have been on this diet for 4 days now and I lost 4 pounds! Amazing isn't it. Hope that helped

And that, my friend, is the difference between a diet and a lifestyle. what you are doing is not sustainable or healthy, especially for someone your age who needs the nutrients for proper physical and brain growth.

Richard Simmon's may be old school, but he sure hit the nail on the head when he said don't die-it, live-it! You have to think of your eating as a lifestyle, it's something you plan to do all your life not just a few months. becuase guess what, when those few months are over and you revert back to your old eating patterns the weight just comes right back on.

Finally, to nannabee21 - whether or not your husband gets on board with your lifestyle eating is neither here nor there, this is something you have to do for yourself, and it becomes an easy excuse to say you cannot change because of his lifestyle. own yourself. :-) cuz no one else can or should!

Absolutely.  Here's the thing for me.  I like the healthy stuff!  I like veggies and smoothies with veggies and juicing. I sometimes get stuck in a rut and eat the same things for a few days because I do like them but for the most part acquiring a taste for baked chicken, fish and veggies is NOT the problem.  It is my mouth and "emotions" that still call for that piece of candy at work when I pass the candy dish.  And when I'm off the junk, I'm off until I have one piece and then "it's on".  I'm feeling better just as I write though.  I appreciate all the comments you all share in this conversation.  Thank you shall127 for beginning the conversation.  I appreciate you.

I am so with you on this one! i love healthy stuff, i eat boat loads of it. but work has this thing about bringing candy and treats in on an almost daily basis. when i'm off the sugar i can avoid it no problem... but once i start look out!  :-) Ahhh it's so good to have the human condition reaffirmed :-)

Everyday for the past year I start each day with this "I will do it" attitude, but at some point of the day I sabotage myself. i know in my head not to eat something and I do it anyways, pretty much telling my inside self "oh well." I even sometimes over eat to spite myself for eating right.  It's not like I am restricting myself, everything I eat is balanced. Can anyone help me understand why this happens? It's like I have a second personality that wants to inflict bad food judgement on me, but it's myself. I just dont understand and after a year of this and gaining back 20lbs of the 45 I lost I am totally frustrated at myself.

sweetie it's called being human and we all do it, even if we tell others we don't .. you can only keep self-correcting and pushing forward. Good luck! :-)

I have discovered that all artificial sweeteners (including the one that claims to be all natural and is sold in yellow packaging) have messed up several of my clear plastic pitchers and clear plastic travel mugs).  Clear plastic containers will begin to look scratched up or foggy (artificially sweetened beverages were the only thing I used these containers for).  I can only imagine what these chemicals must be doing to our bodies!!!

i noticed this also with my clear plastic containers so stopped using plastic and switched to glass lol

no seriously, i just cut way back on how much of this stuff i drink. once in awhile is ok, but not a quart a day... same with MIO water enhancers - if you research the ingredients they mostly seem harmless however they all have coloring...

Motivation CCers who smoke Mar 11 2013

i was a smoker for over 25 yrs and i smoked about 3/4 pack a day. i started very young, 13yrs old. both parents smoked as did my grandparents so i grew up with it.

after my son was born i started to power walk and eat healthy (tho i never really ate unhealthy cuz fastfood wasn't available where i grew up and my mom cooked most foods from their natural source and not a box bag or can). however i continued to smoke.

i always said to myself, hey i've got 2 outta 3 down.. i'll get the third some day.. so give yourself kudos for doing what you can to be healthy, the other will come, some day you'll be ready and you'll quit.

I quit 4 years and 2 weeks ago :-). I'd tried many times, many different ways and then one day i said i'm going to quit for my birthday and i did. and i meant it, if i smoked the day after my birthday i wasn't going to beat myself up over it... but i didn't feel like smoking the day after, or the day after that or the day after that one... and i just kept going, one day at a time, feeling better and better as the days went on. no patches, no gum, no needles, no group, no therapy ;-)

And what you are doing now, eating healthy and getting exercise will only help you when you do finally quit. i took up running (moved up from the powerwalking i'd been doing for 25 years) the month before i quit and i focused on that being my new additiction and it all just kinda fell in place.

so ~ keep doing what your doing

~ you'll quit when you are absolutely ready to

~ don't beat yourself up if you fail the fist, second, third... time.. just consider them practice sessions :-)

1- I think I'm pretty accurate when I saw most people will not be laughing at you but applauding you for getting out there and getting some exercise 2 - don't be so self-conscience because seriously if anyone has a thought about you when they see you run it will probably last one nanosecond before their minds turn back to things that concern them ( of which you are not) 3 - I don't know what kind of neighborhood you live in that people would be following you, but if its that bad go run at the nearest high school or college track.

Congrats on the changes.  Since I started on my plan (Jan. 3), I haven't had fast food or take out of any kind, nor any chips and dips, candy or ice cream (and I've had just one dessert).   These foods previously made regular occurences in my diet.  I've always enjoyed cooking, but being single it often was too much of a chore.  Now I only eat home cooked meals (either by me or at friends' places).  I'm not sure that all those types of foods still wouldn't taste good to me though . . . lol.  Tomorrow I am actually making brownies as a treat/reward.  I plan on only having one tomorrow, save another for Friday dinner, and bring the rest of the pan into the office for co-workers.

Sorry, but i really hate it when people bring their junk food into work... Undecided

About 7 PM put a 1/4 cups steel cut oats in a good thermos, pour in about 1 cup boiling water, seal and lay it down. Let it set over night and at 7AM enjoy some harty oats! Add whatever you want, blueberries, raisins, molasses, peanutbutter... the choices are endless... i've even added mashed pumpkin to mine and it was quite nice :-)

I think your accomplishment is fantastic. But what I find truly awesome is the fact that you recognize the influence you, as a parent, have on your daughter's health and that the example you set today is what she'll carry with her into her adulthood. So many parents just don't get this and when you see a morbidly obese parent you typically see obese children who will have more health problems in their adulthood then their parent or even grandparents ever did...
