Health & Support Things you heard about your weight, nutrition, your e.d, etc. that now piss you off. Mar 26 2011

"I can't believe someone as clever as you would starve herself" ...yes because having half a brain is correlated with mental health.

"Suck in your stomach!"

"Ha ha, you're eating so much cake!" - some random at the train station. I replied "I'm smashed and on a binge mate" and an awkward silence ensued :D

"Only rich, spoiled girls get anorexia"

"Oooh, be careful, you don't want to gain too much weight!" - a family member to my underweight, undereating, EDNOS partner.

"If you want to lose weight, you stop eating carbs for a while, then you go back to eating the things you like" - my overweight mother. Thanks for the advice, mum!

"I don't see why you can't just...you know...EAT" - my GP

Health & Support Sunburn? Mar 20 2011

Stay well hydrated, keep the area cool (I find damp tissues useful, they're less abrasive than a towel), take panadol to help with the pain and inflammation, and try not to burn on top of it. Try to wear baggy shirts/pants that are made from cotton as this will prevent excessive rubbing against the skin. Shame aloe doesn't agree with you, do you have any dedicated after sun lotion handy?

Sounds like it was totally worth it though!

Weight Gain So say I decided to gain on 3500+ a day... Mar 19 2011

Your metabolism will be on fire - you'll probably be maintaining on more than you think you need, especially if you're on the taller side. Glad you've hit the fun part of recovery - food is AWESOME, get out there and try out everything you can fit in that gut of yours!

Health & Support 260 cholesterol at 18 Mar 18 2011

That does sound freakishly high for someone in the healthy weight range who doesn't consume that much trans fat. Is that your total cholesterol, or either HDL or LDL levels? Get it restested in a month and see what it comes out as.

Just as an aside, why do you want to weigh 104 pounds?

Weight Loss 5ft 2in girls--what's your goal weight? Mar 16 2011

I'm 5'2'' and I'm happy in the 120-125 range (54-56 kilos), with a small frame. Right now I'm floating in the 125-130 range, but that's tolerable.

I *could* get down to 110-115 if I really wanted to (been there, done that) but I don't want to as that would mean eating at a deficit level to maintain. No thanks, there's a life to live out there that involves not being overly restrictive.

Maintaining Ahh! Need advice! Mar 08 2011

It won't! Get out there, go to the parties and have fun. Life doesn't need to stop because you are maintaining a healthy lifestyle.

I don't think you'll gain all of that back in fat, our bodies are able to adapt and adjust to different intakes, the sudden increase may give your metabolism an extra jolt, leading it to burn more calories. You might see a bit of water retention especially if you're eating salty things, but this will pass.

Don't worry about it too much, everyone has these weeks and so long as you keep a decent balance between having fun and being sensible then you'll maintain effectively.

Weight Loss Sometimes gaining with a deficit? Mar 08 2011

Sounds like you're not eating enough - paradoxial, but it happens. Your body is holding on to the few calories you do eat to conserve it's energy stores. CC often recommends counts that are far too low for most people.

Have you tried calorie cycling, for example 1800, 1600, 1400, then back up to 1800 and repeat? Or bumping up to maintainence for a week (NOT weighing during this time to save your sanity) just to get you metabolism revved up again? Perhaps your body is happy at this weight - it is technically within the healthy BMI range and you might be better off shaping your body through strength training than dropping a few pounds.

You're not leaving yourself a lot of energy for your body to function. I'd recommend not going below your BMR ( I estimate it would be around the 1400's) to prevent your body slowing down and conserving the calories you eat as fat on the non excercise days, then eat back half the calories you burn on exercise days.

Weight Loss How to refuse food offers? Mar 08 2011

"No, thank you"

"I'd love to but I'm soooo full!"

"Oh! That looks LOVELY!" *leave it untouched*

"It does look fantastic but I've been feeling nauseous/crampy/gassy/on the brink of violent diahorrea all day" (this has the added advantage of the person being too revolted to press further)

"Oh, perhaps could I just have a cup of tea? I feel terrible you going to all this trouble!"

Feed it to the child, perhaps?

Weight Loss is there any quick weight loss diet plan or remedy Mar 07 2011

You can if you starve yourself, but you'll look tired, weak, just as heavy and you'll gain it all back +10% when you finish.

What's the rush?

If there was, everyone would be "toned up and skinny".

Weight Loss Are appetite suppressants okay? Mar 06 2011

Not really. Sounds more like you're eating out of habit instead of genuine hunger - the pills won't do anything to stop that. You're young, get distracted, find a hobby, just anything that doesn't involve food and will occupy your brain between meals.

Also, even if you were eating out of hunger, once you're off the pills you'll return to the same level of hunger you were at before and likely gain all the weight back you lost.

What do you do for cardio? Usually that helps with increasing your burn so you can get away with more calories, plus it's less easy to cram food in while you're running/swimming/cycling.

Weight Loss Question about my diet Mar 06 2011

Zig-zagging sounds like a good idea, but you're right that the calorie recommendations are low for you. If you wanted to zig-zag I'd recommend 2200-2000-1800 repeat to lose, and when you hit maintainence you can hover around 2000-2500 to find the right intake for you.As your fitness levels increase you might like to increase your speed/time on the treadmill.

Are you using a paediatric calculator? WebMD might be popping out those numbers assuming you're over 21, or not taking into account the increased calorie needs of people <21.

Weight Loss I need help. Why aren't I losing weight? Mar 06 2011

Because your body has latched onto whatever it can hold as you're not feeding it enough. While calorie counting is simple and logical, our bodies are geared towards survival, not fitting in neatly into the equation. I know it seems logical that eating less = losing more weight but you're doing yourself a major disservice eating so little. Also, how are you calculating the calories burned at the gym? The numbers on the machines are rarely accurate as they don't take into account your age/gender/BF%/other little things that make a difference.

Foods is eating brownies and other baked goodies going to make me gain weight? Mar 05 2011

If you eat too much of it, yes you will gain weight. If you can practise portion control, feel free to incorporate some into your daily intake. If you're scared of binging, though, I wouldn't recommend baking a whole tray of the stuff.

Foods Diet coke vs coke zero Mar 02 2011

I'm the opposite. I honestly can't tell the difference between regular Coca Cola and Coke Zero. Diet Coke, on the other hand, leaves this grotty aftertaste on my tongue and just tastes different. I don't know what it is about it, but I'm not a fan.

Foods is white rice unhealthy? Feb 28 2011

It's not unhealthy. If you eat more than your recommended intake for your goal (whether it be loss, gain or maintainence) then you may see an increase in weight.

Brown rice is usually higher in fibre so might help with satiety. Go with what works for you - if you like white rice, then eat it.

Foods Will I get high cholesterol if I eat a whole egg 5 days a week? Feb 28 2011
07:47 (UTC)

No you won't. Eggs are great for you on so many levels, they have a range of essential vitamins with a good deal of protein - they've gotten a bad rap in the past few years. I eat 2-4 eggs a day, every day (unless I'm travelling or something) and I'm the only one in my family with normal cholesterol levels.

Your BF% might not be high enough to kick start the hormone depended process of growing that lining, then shedding it. Also, while a BMI of 20 is "normal", it's not ideal for someone in recovery. Often people will need to go to BMIs 23-25 to fully recover physically, then your body will settle back down to the weight it's happy at (which might not be a BMI of 20).
