Walk at whatever pace is comfortable. Keep walking....alot. I had to lose 40+ pounds and did it with walking. Eventually once all my vital signs improved I started running.  Skip all the plans and "methods" and do what is the easiest which is eat very healthy and increase your calorie burning whatever way possible. Simple math when the calorie burning is above the calorie intake.

Fitness Rest days - yay or nay? Feb 25 2013

I run a lot and used to ignore days off. I do much better taking one rest day per week and usually after a long run. Can't say what it does for me but I do run better on average with a rest day. So I guess the experts are correct.

I run a lot and rely on water most of the time. If really hot and on a long run, like a marathon or 2+ hour training run, I will either have some gatorade or Nunn electrolyte tab in water. If you sweat alot and lose electrolytes it affects performance and can be unhealthy. Google hydration and running...there is a ton of info out there as well as many forum posts here on CC.

I prefer rock but on the web there are many sites with suggestions. Some sites are solely for running lists. I put some links below.

Health & Support Is my low-carb, high protein diet dangerous? Feb 18 2013

I did Atkins low carb years ago. I lost weight but couldn't keep it off. Plus it limits many common foods. But a few years ago when my weight was back up too high I decided to make a serious change. I started eating normal but healthy foods(not much processed) and started exercising. I dropped 50lbs and corrected all my bad health measurements like lowering my BP to 100/65...lowering my cholesterol from 252 tp 200...took 7 inches off my waist. I now eat three main meals and three in between snacks all day. I'm never hungry and run a ton of miles. I feel great. I do what everyone hears but ignore.....eat right and exercise. You will lose weight. Check my gallery to see the improvement.

Foods Are eggs unhealthy? Feb 17 2013

I eat 2 hard boiled eggs each day. Occasionally scrambled once a month. 5 years ago my cholesterol was 252. I changed everything in my life but researched the "egg + cholesterol" issue. I found that eggs were not the evil enemy made out to be and in fact very good for you as many here have stated. BTW---without any drugs my cholesterol is now 200.

Fitness Half-Marathon Training Feb 14 2013

Start with a shorter race. 5k or 5 mile. Then work up. On your training runs you need to get to at least a 10 mile distance several times before a race. I wouldn't worry about the pace yet. Do your best but focus on the distance. You'll find the pace is slower for longer runs.

At 54 years old my doc told me I had to do something because my BP and cholesterol was too high(BP=130/80 and Chol was 252). I weighed 240lbs and did no exercise, ate poorly and drank too much. So I started walking and eating better.  I walked for 1 1/2 years and lost 40 lbs. I then tried a little running which grew into an obsession although a good obsession. Now I weigh 190lbs and run everyday. In the past two years I have run 3 marathons and about 18 half marathons. Also did a bunch of small races like 5k and 10k. My BP is 100/65 and my cholesterol is 202. I took 7" off my waist and generally look much healthier. My gallery pics has some old shots. I am currently training for my first ultramarathon which is 31 miles. All I can say is forget all the fads and diet plans out there. Just eat healthy foods and do some sort of exercise.

I've been eating 1 or 2 bananas everyday for 5 years. I lost 50lbs because of exercise and eating better. The bananas were not an issue.

Since I changed my lifestyle a number of years ago I'm never hungry. An unintended benefit. I went from 250lbs to 190lbs by changing my diet from all bad(donuts, fast foods, snacks, diet sodas, meats, alcohol, tons of fried stuff, etc) to all healthy which is mostly natural with lots of fruits and vegetables. Also lots of exercising primarily running. I feel great and am never hungry. It helps to space out meals throughout the day and I never miss a meal.

When I decided to get healthy my lifestyle change included a strict meal schedule. Meaning I eat three main meals and three snacks in between. I haven't skipped a meal in 3 years. I believe that its very important to keep the fuel going in your body for a revved up metabolism and it does prevent hunger and therefore over eating. Not scientific but I'm sold on not skipping meals.

Fitness I'm not a runner, but want to run... any advice? Jul 14 2012

I walked for 2 years before starting to run. My walking was short and slow but I built it up to 4+ miles at a fast pace over time. Then I started running slow short(under a mile) distances mixed with my walk. 4 years after starting to walk I have lost over 50lbs, lowered my BP and Cholesterol, took 7" off my waist, and run a ton. At 58 I'm very pleased with my results. Now I run 4-7 miles everyday and run long distances and races on weekends. So anyone can do it but no need to rush or increase distance/speed rapidly. Any kind of added movement whether walking or running is good. Don't focus on performance just focus on doing something and gradually increasing whatever you do.

Running in the winter I was on a busy street and had to hop up on a curb due to heavy traffic. It was a simple curve with lawn which I assumed was frozen since it was January. I hopped and when my foot came down on the lawn it was all loose mud. It had thawed. My foot sunk in about 3", I tripped and fell flat on my face. I tore my running pants and bruised my knee. I also bruised my ego since it was a busy intersection.

After trying various ways to loose weight and stay in shape I found what works for me. Very basic. I eat well with low fat/low sugar/low salt diet. Almost no red meat but mostly chicken. Lots of salads with minimal dressings. I don't drink alcohol or any type of soda. I run every day but for the first few years only walked....but everyday. Now I'm 4 years into my makor lifestyle change and very healthy. I didn't focus on losing fat and waistlines but the result of my lifestyle change is the following:

-I took 7" off my waist.

-Lost 50lbs

-Dramatically dropped my blood pressure and cholesterol.

-Dropped my BMI and % body fat significantly

The point is do everything the AHA and AMA state and follow the many success stories here on CC. Avoid any gimmic or plan that promises anything. Just eat healthy and exercise. The boduy shape improvements will follow.

I've posted many times that I eat plain dry cheerios as a snack each evening. I have a cup while watching TV which as under 200 calories. Simple and easy. Relatively healthy and they last a long time. Helps to keep me away from other snacks.

Just keep at it. This site can help with the discussions here, advice columns, and the food log. It has worked for many. I give credit to CC for being a big electronic assistant when I started losing weight.

At 54 years old I was 250ish and during my physical my doc said cholesterol and BP was going up. He said if I didn't do something I would just get worse and things would go downhill. So I started walking and eating right. The weight started to come off. That led to some running and then more running. Now 4 years later I run everyday and have done many races including a marathon. I lost more than 50lbs, took 7" off my waist, my BP and cholesterol are normal. My resting heart rate is 50. A major lifestyle change. Probably boring to Nicholas(above) yet probably saved my life. Anyone reading who is wondering where to start only needs to walk out the door and .....walk. No need for big plans, wild diets, or extreme sports.....just walk.

Allergy Remedies
Is It Possible to Go Natural?
The side effects of allergy medications keep some people from using them. Natural remedies can be a great alternative, but some are more effective than others.
