 Because for all your attempted tricks to raise your BMR--getting cold showers, etc. (which will have at best, a very minimal temporary effect), the best thing to do to boost your metabolism is eat an appropriate amount of calories. :-)

Keep in mind that losing 6 pounds a week isn't the norm. You can safely lose 1% of your body weight a week--that's roughly how much fat your body can metabolize a week. Losing more than that, you're losing muscle mass (which for a physically demanding job, especially isn't good!). And as you continue, that 1% becomes a smaller and smaller number--for example, 1% right now would be 2.5 pounds, but at your goal weight would be only 1.6 pounds.

Basically, a year is a much more realistic time frame, and even that will be difficult. Good luck to you!

The worst commercial ever is definitely the one for Head On (...apply directly to the forehead). I think the point of that commercial was to drive the viewer to NEED some of the product by the end of the commercial.

The Shake Weight one is the most unintentionally hilarious commercial. Afterwards I sat there, "...was that a real commercial?"

Unfortunately, with PCOS and being insulin resistant, you have a lot of factors working against you. Losing 15lbs is great, and it's certainly not 'practically nothing'! It's almost 10% of your body weight! I can understand, however, your frustration--I would do a search for some threads/groups with people dealing with PCOS. Having someone in your same situation to vent to would help immensely, I'm sure. Keep up the good work, and remember, weight is not the only barimeter of health. You may have 'only' lost 15lbs, but by changing your eating habits and incorporating regular exercise, you've immensely improved your health. Your entire body is healthier because of your hard work--so be proud!

Hey all, I've been dropping in and out. :-) Sometimes I need a break from CC!

This morning I'm at 119. My lowest was still right before senior week--117.5. I overate majorly yesterday and am going out for dinner tonight (my father is going away on Sunday so I'm taking him out tonight to celebrate Father's Day). I wanted to go to the gym today to exercise but I twisted my knee at work yesterday so am taking it easy today. It feels better today but definitely not 100%, and since I have to work again tomorrow, Saturday, and Sunday (I work as a host so I'm on my feet for extended periods of time) I decided to give it a rest.

My goal for June 30th is to get back to 117.5!

My parents also got me a camera, which was great for all the high school grad parties I was going to (and my own, which was my big gift--the party). For college graduation I got a very pretty bracelet and we went out for a really nice dinner, and honestly, it was a lot nicer than the big HS grad party and a lot less stressful for everyone involved. :-)

I constantly changed my goal weight. I'm 5'2. Having been up and down, I've settled on 118 (which is around where I am now, so I'm working on maintaining). When I get higher than that, I start getting a little belly (I've always been a pear and carried my weight in my hips/thighs/butt, but when I lose weight and then regain it, I tend to gain it in my belly). Lower than that, I wouldn't fit in my clothes anymore, and honestly, I like my clothes and have no reason/desire to trade in my size 3/4s for anything smaller. 118 is right in the middle of a healthy BMI, and sure, while I definitely have some fat in my hips/thighs/butt still, I continue to workout while maintaining that weight.

 In most of the cases above, no one is interested in hearing your (collective 'you') here 'truth'. There's a difference between being honest and telling the truth when a friend asks how a dress looks on them, for example (although you can still do in a much more tactful way than "wow, that makes you look huge!") and offering your opinion, unasked, to a complete stranger. No one is asking for a lie--they are merely asking for a little bit of social grace.

Recently I went to a friend's college graduation party, and her aunt came up to another friend and I, talking about how she kind of remembered us from our friend's high school graduation party four years ago, but didn't remember our names. My friend's mom piped up, "Oh, you probably don't recognize Ashley, she used to be SO MUCH HEAVIER." ...? Was I really that obscured by fat four years ago? It was made even more awkward by the fact that the friend next to me had gained weight since high school. O_o I replied, "Or maybe it's because she's only seen me once, four years ago?" I know my friend's mom was trying to pay a compliment, but it made it sound like before losing weight, I had been a whale.

When you eat more and feel hungry, that's because your metabolism is GOING.

When you eat 600 calories a day, you're starving.

You might think "oh, hey, I'm not hungry" but in no way is eating 600 calories a day 'better' than eating a balanced, non-starvation diet.

So that's a deficit of more like 700, rather than 350. I'd try eating more--1200-1300 isn't very much at all. I reached 119lbs (your goal weight as well) eating 1600-1700 calories a day exercising about 5 times a week. Try eating more around 1500 for a more modest 500 calorie deficit. When your calories in are so far from your calories out, sometimes your body rebels because it thinks it's starving.

The truth of the matter is, weight fluctuates for seemingly no reason at all. If you're up a pound, it's not necessarily actual WEIGHT--fat OR muscle. Sometimes it's because you haven't had a BM for awhile. Sometimes it's because you're retaining water, from excess sodium, not drinking enough water, or because of your period. You can't let yourself get caught up in explaining every pound change. If you know you're doing the right things, you know it's not fat gain.

Hi bigphun! I saw you hadn't gotten any replies--I am not a type 1 diabetic, but my younger brother is. He was diagnosed about seven and a half years ago. His is fairly well-controlled, although he's going through a bit of a rebellious stage right now where he's not monitoring it as closely. My parents try and keep a tight rein on it. He just switched to the continuous blood sugar monitor, which he's not crazy about--I think he would have rather stuck with the meter. He has the pump, too, which he does like a lot.

In my gallery...starting weight 152lbs, goal weight reached of 118lbs (5'2).

I love to eat, so a low calorie diet was never for me. While losing weight, I exercised 5-6 times a week for about 45 minutes a day, eating 1600-1700 calories. Right now I'm working on improving my fitness as I kind of became a gym slacker after losing the majority of my weight. I'm just beginning maintenance while working out around 3 times a week (trying to get it back up to 4).

Agreed that a 'cushion' isn't necessary. Work on maintaining your goal weight, and if you gain a few pounds, you just go back to having a modest deficit.

As for the 'challenge', change your goal to fitness goals. I'm at my goal weight, as well, and while working to maintain that weight I'm also working on being able to run (I've never been able to run for more than 5 minutes at a time) a 5k, and eventually hopefully a 10k. It keeps me motivated, keeps me going to the gym, gives me that sense of 'accomplishment' that I used to get through seeing the number on the scale go down. You have to find a substitute for that 'high' you describe, because obviously you can't lose weight forever.

Agreed that you do not need to compensate--just go back to normal! Occassionally letting go and not counting is good for the spirit/mind--it helps you not feel deprived. As for real weight gain, it would be under a pound, and it may be nothing at all. While 3500 excess calories=1 pound, if you only exceed calorie count occassionally, your metabolism will speed up a tiny bit to compensate for the extra. In general, your body wants to remain at a constant weight, and will adjust to fight weight loss AND weight gain. (Again, this is only if you occassionally eat in excess...obviously if you eat 400 calories over maintenance every day, you will gain weight.)

No. Healthy weight loss is slow. You're right on track.

EDIT: By 'right on track' I mean your rate of loss...I can't say for your diet/calorie consumption, though I suspect you could eat more in the range of 1500-1700.

I'd go for a bathing suit with an attached skirt/swim shorts versus regular shorts and a t-shirt, which will get heavy and chafe, as others have said, and be very, very uncomfortable.

If you're self-conscious, keep a towel around your waist until you get into the water and put it back on when you get back out (which makes sense since you'll be wet, too!). Once you're IN the water it'll be very hard for anyone to notice any sort of specific body flaws.

I'd definitely not recommend shorts/t-shirt...we wear bathing suits for a reason, and not because they look good! And I feel your pain--bathing suit shopping is pretty much the worst thing in the world. I'm at my goal weight now and I still cried in the dressing room trying on bathing suits--there's just nothing flattering about them!

 On the contrary, I think photos can be very deceiving.... lighting, angle, clothing all make a huge difference in how a person looks in a picture. Why do you think the "myspace pose" exists?

EDIT: OP, looking through your old posts, you say you've suffered from an ED and post-ED, ended up at 111lbs at 5'4. 10 pounds would put you at a weight of 121lbs--honestly, you probably look better/healthier at that weight. Those ten pounds may be less the product of 'college life' and more the product of your body further recovering.

Honestly, I think people have to lose/gain a good amount of weight before other people notice (which I'm assuming you mean when you ask when it's 'noticable'). I'm 5'2, so pretty short, and honestly, I can tell the difference in my body when I gain/lose 5lbs...but I know no one else can. Especially if you fit into the same clothes, I'm sure no one else will notice. (Amusingly enough, I gained five pounds my freshman year of college (which was before I started losing weight), and my grandmother said it looked like I had lost weight--because she had mentally started picturing me with the 'freshman 15' so she wouldn't react in surprise upon seeing me. XD)

What did you eat in college that caused such a problem? And what are you eating now that you're home? I've found in college, it was the quality of the food (not great) combined with drinking and late night snacking that caused weight gain for most students. Summer is a great time to change your habits and to carry those habits back with you to school.

How many calories are you eating a day? If you're eating a proper amount, maybe try to eat more high-density, low-calorie foods. Also, if you've started working out, make sure you drink enough water--sometimes your brain confuses thirsty for hunger. Maybe switch your eating/workout schedule so that you can eat after exercise?

I disagree that losing weight is a process where you have to go hungry. I hate going hungry. When I'm hungry--actually hungry, not bored/thirsty--I eat, because that's what my body obviously wants. Hasn't stopped me from losing weight.
