Wish I had an answer for you, I'm sort of struggling with the same thing! I'm hoping that I'm building muscle and that's why I'm stuck. I've been walking 3 miles three to four times a week and trying to work out. On top of that just a lot of outdoor yard work/house work like cleaning out the shed and barns. Wish that number would drop just to give me some peace of mind though. |

I would up your calories to 1300 or even 1400 today and see what happens. I would guess you were eating more than 2000 calories a day before calorie counting, so at 1400 you're STILL eating much less than that and should see a loss. Better yet use the BMR tool on here and find out the maximum calories you need to exist on. Eating anything less than than that should result in loss. I notice for myself, if I drop too low, my body holds on to everything and the scale won't budge. This happens sometimes when I eat 1200-1300 calories a day (which is what I'm doing right now) and you're eating considerably less than that. I lose for a bit then get "stuck". It seems to help me when I have a high calorie day - like tricking my body into thinking we're not on a diet anymore! :) As far as a scale digital's are usually more accurate. I have a cheapie old fashioned scale that probably shows me 5 ro 6 pounds lighter than I actually am, but the loss shows up so that's what's important (and I like the lower number better lol*). I'm 31 by the way. I should add not feeling hungry isn't an indicator of being in starvation mode - but if you're eating very low calories and not losing, THAT is. Some days I'm full at 1000 calories and force myself a snack just to stay in a healthy range.

Thank you all so much for the advice! I know this is old now, but I thought I'd just update for anyone interested. I ended up caving for a few months but am back on my diet. I think I have figured out why I was SO hungry. Protein and Fiber THAT has been key!!! I have also started drinking more water. When I'm really really really hungry I've been going for peanut butter and wheat bread, whole wheat wrap and chicken or even cheese and wheat bread and making sure I drink something, water or flavored water. I think this may be the answer for me. ALSO I have discovered that regular pasta and sugar cause me to crave more. While I was off my diet I was drinking almost 5 cups of coffee a day, with full fat full calorie FRENCH VANILLA creamer. You know what I discovered? I was craving the SUGAR more than the coffee. I'd crave it in the afternoon too, about an hour before dinner time. I think it has EVERYTHING to do with low blood sugar. EVERYONE but me and my Dad on my side of the family has diabetes. I think I was eating a good breakfast, good lunch, but then going from 11am until 5 or sometimes 6 for dinner. So I am trying to eat every 3 or 4 hours too and that is really helping. I'm down to 1, MAYBE 2 cups of coffee per day, and the extra calories from less coffee allows me more calories for MEALS. This is making a huge difference and I really feel like I could do this long term now. Thanks again for all the help and advice, hope this helps someone else too! :) |

Well, not knowing anything about how much you have to lose or anything, 1400 sounds like a pretty reasonable and doable starting point. I mean if you're 120 pounds and want to lose 5 pounds then maybe not so much, but if you're trying to lose 20, 30 or even 50 pounds, then that sounds about right. If it's really that difficult for you to get to 1400 why not try adding one of those meal supplement shakes? Not a meal REPLACEMENT shake, but the healthy shakes that are supposed to be full of vitamins and things you wouldn't normally get in your diet? Drink it with lunch to add a few calories or with breakfast. Then when it comes time to drop down to 1300 calories you have something easy you can omit from your diet and it wouldn't be much extra work considering your schedule. I would bring it up with your trainer, maybe he or she has an even better idea. :) |

*Edited to add* You know what, on the note of diet foods/convenient foods...not to say that I don't ever buy them because I do, but I avoid them because in the long run even though they might be lower in calories, they are usually heavily processed and just not very good for you. You're better off in my opinion buying the higher calorie version of some foods because they are less tampered with, and just eating half a serving or something! :) |

Similar to a lot of the previous posters I agree, eating better and being more physical does make me feel SO much better. I truly think it's all the chemicals and crap they put into processed foods, and the drug like effect too much sugar and fat have on our bodies. It's no accident that one approach used on autistic children is DIET. So many ailments can be cured or greatly improved just by changing diet, I think it's absolutely linked to our mental well being just the same. Anxiety and depression also run in my family and I have experience both in my lifetime. Only recently have I really started to connect my diet to how I'm feeling, and I notice a HUGE difference. This is a huge motivator for me to eating better and losing weight - I'm sick of feeling like crap all the time! |

| Weight Loss | what's the best thing to eat on bread? | May 20 2012 12:09 (UTC) |

I eat bread all the time, why no bread??? I like the 35 calorie a slice bread, but right now I'm eating weight watchers whole wheat that's 40 calories a slice. A good alternative to tuna salad would be tuna fish mixed with a wedge of laughing cow cheese...I LOVE that stuff! :) Half a can of tuna in water would be around 65 calories and laughing cow cheese is 35 calories a wedge. OR you could have peanut butter on bread which is what I have for breakfast often. One tablespoon is about 180 calories so I eat one teaspoon of natural peanut butter on one slice of low cal toast and that's usually about 130 calories. Plain cucumber would be AWESOME on a slice of wheat toast with some laughing cow cheese, especially the garlic and herb flavor. There are practically no calories in cucumer because it's all water so that would be a great choice! |

You know I had that thought today, maybe I'm thirsty? I drink lot of coffee and since I cut out soda I haven't been replacing it with the water that I know I should be drinking. I'm going to try that and do some better snack planning as well. Thank you! ;) |

I'm no expert but some of my favorite snacks/small yet filling meals are: - slice of whole wheat toast with TBS of peanut butter - tuna with two cups of spinach and a little bit of ranch dressing - baked potato topped with spinach and tuna with ranch - banana and Dannon Light & Fit yogurt (the yogurt is 80 cal) Love the 1/2 serving of PB especially when I'm having a sugar craving. |

| Weight Loss | How much do you eat to lose weight? | Nov 29 2011 16:24 (UTC) |

I'm 30, 5'2, and 207 pounds. My lowest weight ever was 123, and just a few months ago I was 178. I got lazy and gained the weight back FAST. To lose weight, so far, the best method for me has been to eat about 1400-1500 calories a day, allowing myself two days of 1600-1700 calories. I exercise maybe twice a week and try to keep busy and active the rest of the week. I know this isn't the recommended way to lose weight but it works for me, and as I get closer to my goal weight and build up stamina I hope to exercise more and I will probably have to level out my calorie intake a bit. |

Although I agree it's really hard to tell from person to person, as my Mom weighs about ten pounds less than me but wears two sizes larger than me, and we're the same height. But when I weighed 140 pounds I wore a size 10/12 (US), and I am also 5'2. I should also add I was at my happiest with my weight then too because I could still eat, but I also felt really good about myself. |

| Weight Loss | What's 1400 look like? | Jul 13 2011 21:38 (UTC) |

I eat 1200-1400 calories per day, and I do sometimes find myself still hungry. If I plan well and fill up on fruits and veggies I'm less hungry than when I'm in a hurry and eat quick prepackaged processed foods...but I don't always have time to do that. I try to eat a lot of snacks throughout the day so I never get to that point of where I feel like I'm "starving". For me it helps. A typical day for me looks like:
1 1/2 cups of Honey Bunches of Oats Cereal with 1/2 cup 1% milk (235) cup of fruit (100) egg salad wrap with two eggs whole wheat low cal tortilla and light mayo (255) cup of baby carrots with light ranch dressing (100) lowfat low cal yogurt (80) grilled chicken wrap with low cal wrap, light ranch dressing and lettuce (310) broccoli with zero calorie butter spray (70) cup of fruit or prepackaged granola bar (100)
1250 calories for day, and if you're on 1400 calories per day then you could add another snack or side with your wraps. Sometimes I find myself hungry in the evening and will just go ahead and have something small...it's better than binging on junk later in my opinion. |
