Does doing yoga when it's hot burn more calories than in a cool room?  I don't believe so, I think you just sweat more, but I could be wrong.

I would log it as whatever style of yoga you did for that length of time.  Was it hatha, vinyasa, power, or "restorative"  (but in a hot room)?

If you're phytic-acids aware then you'll know that white rice is the least resistant.

Also, cut back on the deep fried rolls and the cream cheese rolls.   Keep the fish the good fatty fish like salmon or mackerel and maybe order extra of the sashimi on the side.

Seriously, sushi is the least offensive of 99% of restaurant foods.  I rarely eat out but when I do it's traditional sushi!

Also, the sodium is the least of my worries- we actually need some.

My road is a "main" thoroughfare, but the posted limit is 25. My husband and I and a couple neighbors seem to be the ONLY people who actually drive 25 on. A posted speed limit means you should NOT be driving more than 5 mph over that, at least in a residential area and you definitely should not be driving that fast when there are children living on that street. Most people drive at least 40 on it. It gives me a feeling of satisfaction when I am driving the limit and I see people behind me getting pissed off. It makes me giggle. I also get pissed off and find ways to get pleasure when I am at a stop light and I see someone in my rearview mirror looking down for prolonged periods of time, presumably texting. I will then let my foot off my break just enough so the lights go off and watch how long it takes the other driver to notice (not long enough to start rolling or anything) or I'll tap the breaks enough so the lights are going on and off so that the other driver might think that its time to drive, then put my foot back on the break. Because obviously they aren't paying attention. Its fun.

I wish there were more traffic patrols or police sitting on the road with their radar guns. It would make me slightly less scared to have my children out in the front yard.

I agree that speeding on a residential street of any kind is really bad.   People need to think about their own kids or little loved ones when they drive like a77hats on a street where kids live.

I second the "Don't diet".  Learn how to eat well for the rest of your life or you'll probably just gain the weight back when you get OFF your diet.

Weight Loss anyone switch from vegan to paleo? Mar 30 2012

Original Post by veggielovernyc:

I have been eating vegan for a while and lost a lot of weight but then started to gain. I rarely eat grains and only eat vegetables! It doesn't make sense, but my nutrionist once told me that you have to always balance carbs (yes even vegetables) with protein, and she recommends animal! Does anyone have any experience switching to paleo diet after eating the way I have been and lost weight? Is my nutrionist right about even vegetable carbs needing to be balanced with protein?

I think primal/paleo is the most ideal way (nutritionally dense) to eat if you can and will.  Funny how so many others listed rice, beans, and grains as a way to get protein for carbs when these foods are SO high in carbs and have little protein compared to meat.  And yes, please stay away from all soy (occasional unfermented is okay, with seaweed) unless you need the phyto-estrogens to ultimately suppress your thyroid.  Yikes.

I love Mark's Daily Apple. IMO, he has the best nutrition advice out there.

Question: Our highways here have a max speed of 65mph. If I do 65mph, am I not allowed in the "fast" lane?

Depends on whether or not your state has a Keep Right Except to Pass law ("KRETP").  If you're traveling in the left lane without passing, you could get pulled over.

Even then, it's just common courtesy to not block the passing lane, unless you're in Ohio.  Ohioans are the absolute worst when it comes to blocking the left lane, in my opinion.  Bunch of jerks.

In Colorado (and most states I do believe) the far left highway lanes are for active passing only yet everyone hangs out in them no matter their speed. Drives me bonkers and it's a ticketable offense.  I don't care if someone is doing 46 or 101 behind me, if I'm not actively passing someone in the right lane and I'm in the far left lane and that person is coming up behind me and I'm slower, I need to get my a88 back over to the right lane.

And four way stops are counterclockwise right-of-ways (that's the person to YOUR right) starting with the person who got there first - unless two people can go at the same time without crashing into each other.   I'm amazed at the people who don't know this anymore.  Didn't we all take the same driver's test?

Thanks everyone.  I have searched in Amazon for those who complained about it not being long enough.  I'm going to have to get creative with customizing my own velcro straps for now or just keep tying knots.

OGR- I have looked at the iClear several times.  I'll give it a shot.

Thanks for the leads and tips!

I have the velcro kind, they stretch out after a few uses and the velcro "runs out" of space for the attachment-it won't go any tighter.  My last one is tied in three knots (to make it smaller) as it keeps stretching and stretching.

Somone would really make bank if they made smaller ones.  Money mouth

Keira, I think Polar (?) makes a smaller chest strap that's very adjustable as well.  I'm about 34 inches around the my chest and the small size works well.  You can replace the straps on Polars without having to buy a new HR monitor.

The original poster is trying to lose weight, I assume, she called herself "soo fat".

I would gather that 90% of those who come to CC and read our blogs aren't elite athletes.

I was just giving some friendly advice.   I too have been guilty of "eating" up my work-out then wonder why I can't lose weight then want to give up.  Sound familiar to anyone else?  It's terribly easy to do.

Some Japanese bathrooms have these "toilet noise makers" in their stall to drowned any noise that you're embarrassed your body makes.

Me, if I'm doing something that's that noisy I just assume be non-green and give a courtesy flush.

And gatorade, muscle milk, chocolate milk, et. al. AFTER a work-out?  That's just nuts,

To think that people might try to replenish their bodies after working out.  They are seeking hydration, carbohydrates to refill their glycogen storages, protein, maybe even some fat.  Now, they should be locked up in the loony bin*

*I don't drink gatorade or muscle milk, just sayin'

Laughing

Yeah, I was targeting those who need to create calorie deficits to lose weight.  It's hard to do if you're consuming it all back, especially with sugars.

A 60-150 calorie drink 5x/week can add up to a LOT of empty calories.  Those folks who gave up sodas probably did for that reason.   I think there's a better way to rehydrate and get your potassium.  Consuming all the extras (drinks, bars) unless they replace meals seem just self-defeating to me.  Gatorade was made for athletes who train HOURS/day and originally had a lot less sugar in them.  Most of the stuff they make to "refuel" seem to just be candy.

I'm trying to lose weight and the last thing I want to do is consume MORE calories before my workout- not that you're doing this but I'm not sure.  But that's me and I try to concentrate instead on staying hydrated and just burn calories and the stored energy in my body.

I think too many people make the mistake of drinking all these sugary energy drinks (yes, even vitamin water) and/or eating "protein" bars before a work-out when the food they've consumed throughout the day (assuming you're not working out before breakfast) has probably been enough or too much... or we wouldn't trying to be losing weight, right?

And gatorade, muscle milk, chocolate milk, et. al. AFTER a work-out?  That's just nuts, (unless you're a skinny elite athlete) you've probably just drank all the calories that you've just burned off!

Not that you're doing any of what I've just listed, but I see many people who do.

The Lounge Dealing with my own jealousy Feb 10 2012

A LOT of good advice here.

I bet she wishes you could be happy with your own weight-loss.

And most importantly keep telling yourself: "Her weight loss has NOTHING to do with me, she didn't DO this to me, I am in control of my own life/body and I'm doing well!"

It also comes down to working on "choosing" to feel differently about her- to reprogramme how you react to thinking about her weight-loss, every time those thoughts or feeling arise.  Yes, it will take work but you've already taken the first step.  When those fearful and angry (afterall, isnt' that what jealousy is?) feelings come up try whispering with a smile "Good for her!" or something like that.

Congrats on your own weight-loss, btw, you SHOULD be proud.

BTW I forgot to mention I am currently running outside and it is cold air (around 20-30 degrees F)  Does anyone know if I will suffer more do find it easier if it warms up a bit?

Thanks for your replies so far. I appreciate them.

hmal734933915- Thanks for the confidence.  I'm trying to get better at this and push myself. I find myself picking landmarks to get to and once I make them I try to keep going.  The last .2 miles I make myself run A LOT faster to push myself and it's really been paying off. Feeling better each run?

There are plenty of people who work and play that hard in that kind of cold.  You're hardcore!  I won't run outside unless it's 38F+ degrees.

It sounds like you're doing well and since you're a new runner it's better to start off slow as to not injure yourself.

I've been running solo 5k's for a year now (with three months off for knee inflammation of sorts) and I've only shaved 4 minutes off of my 5k.  I'm just happy to be running though as I LOVE running and how it makes me feel.

Keep up the good work!

NO, all calories are NOT created equal!

Read this easy short article.  http://fatthenfitnow.wordpress.com/2011/07/07 /calories-in-do-not-equal-calories-out/

You're nutritionally depraved if you're eating nothing but junk and sweets.  Ditch the sugar for meat and veggies, please.  And yes, there are carbs in veggies.

I know all calories are not created equal. But when you're new to healthy eating it's best not to over complicate things, calories in vs calories out will generally work for the first steps of weight loss. A 400lb person could theoretically lose weight eating pizza pops as long as he was eating less than he burned... but the close you get to your goal weight the harder it becomes ot lose weight and the more you have to tweek your diet and exercise regime.

Believe me I could write a 50 page essay on the topic, but I doubt the OP would bother reading the whole thing haha. You can't learn everything all at once!

But then again, if she shoots for the milky way maybe she'll land on the moon.  I would freak out if a loved one was eating nothing but sugar, I would be afraid their health was in serious trouble!   I don't think I was loud enough.   Wink
