Fitness share your ab routine with me Feb 17 2009

Original Post by eddiepotter:

I feel a little weird when people say squats for abs…I’ve been working out for years, and I know I do tighten my abs for squats, but it is by far not the best workout for abs, and usually I have much better abs than the people who argue that squats and deadlifts are the  “it” thing for abs.

My ab routine is quite simple, and I do this about 4 times a week.

I get on the little v shaped oblique bench, and I do oblique’s with a 35-45lb weight in hand. Only 3 sets of 13

Then I do cable crunches…I get on my knees, and hold the ropes, and pull down in a reverse crunching motion…4 sets of 14 @ 150LB

In between each cable crunch set, I get on the stability ball, and I hold a 45lb plate on my stomach, and bang out about 15 crunches

After this, I get a 15lb medicine ball, and hold it in my hand while I rotate side to side.

Then I get on the stability ball once more, and bang out as much as I can till I can’t do anymore.

Then stretch my abs…..everything that I do here for my abs is to get the pop effect – bigger abs!!!

like u said, this is good for bigger abs but most women don't want that look, they want tight flat abs.. for that I think exercises where you hold the abs in are more effective and also diet is key, more so than the workouts.

I don't think you are supposed to pack down anything when you measure it.. it def gives you more than a serving if you do it that way.

there are a lot of threads on this book..

I wouldn't go as far as saying "well written."  Like any diet book out there, it makes good points but take it with a grain of salt.

I heart HIIT workouts.  You really only need to do them a few times a week.  Also you don't HAVE to do it on the tredmil.. you can jump rope hard for 1 min, take 2 min off.. or do it on a spin bike to switch it up.

You said you are very music driven.. me too!  Try making your own mix.  Use itunes so put 1 min of fast pump you up music and then 2 min of slower music or whatever your interval lengths are.  Have fun :)

omg I just made this martha stewart recepie for my roomates and they loved it, it was really good and healthy.  I made a few alterations.. I used whole wheat barilla pasta, cottage cheese instead of ricotta, non fat cheddar.. and I added sauted spinach, onions, green onions and bell pepper.  You could add any veggies you want really.  The butternut squash makes this so creamy and good for you!   enjoy :)

good adivce in the posts.  Basically you have to learn how to live life surrounded by temptation.  Look at models/actresses (ok not best real life comparison but heres my point..)  they are constantly surrounded by alcohol, free food, and parties and still have to maintain weight.  We live in America, food is plentiful and there are plenty of unhealthy choices to make every day. The key is to make your healthy lifestyle work wherever you are, and don't be sucked into peer pressure when other people make bad choices when you are out.  You can still go to the pub and eat your favs, just watch portions and look for healthier subs if you can.   Just know that you do as well as you can MOST of the time.  enjoy life :)

I am 5'8, 130 lbs, size 2... if they stop carrying my size I'll be pissed.

Its supply and demand, stores want to make money so they wouldn't carry clothes that didn't sell.

you said you live in a dorm.. do you/can you go to the dining hall in the morning?

Do you have a microwave/fridge?

I eat egg whites and whole wheat english muffins every day for bfast.. u can cook the egg white in the microwave.

Dried fruit and nuts are something easy to munch on on the way to class

apple and peanut butter would be convenient too

You said you don't like dairy, how about one of those soy yogurts with some fruit and cereal mixed in?

At least switch the cereal up for some variety... I love kashi go lean, tons of protein and fiber keeps you full forever.

people like these products for ease, convenience and easy portion control.  I use to eat them a lot but find real food more satisfying.  I also recently started to make my own to avoid processed foods.  I think they have there time and place but shouldn't be relied in place of foods.

Hey we have very similar stats.  I am 5'8 130 but have been as high as 155ish.   I too carry most of my weight around my mid section, as do most people.  I am down to 130 now and have virtually no fat there.. 130 is still a healthy weight for our height. (BMI of 20).  Its really up to you and what you are going for.  If you want to lose weight it wouldnt be unhealthy to do so, but there is no physical need for it so its really just about how you want your body to look.  Good luck :)

I agree with GI jane and have had similar experiences.   When I eat whole, clean, low GI foods I feel much more satisfied off of less calories.  Think about  it, 1800 cals of cookies for the day v. 1800 cals of lean protiens, veggies and whole grains.  You get a lot more "bang for your buck" so to speak when you eat these kinds of foods.
