Last week- 166

I'm ok with it, because last week I had lost 6 pounds which seemed like too much. I feel motivated about the coming week and just bought some non-fat greek yogurt as motivation-yummm.

Hey Gi-Jane, thanks for your always thoughtful post replies! I've always heard people underestimate their food intake/calories by a good amount, so I've been overestimating my food intake to account for that common error. Perhaps you're right, I'll try bringing up my food intake to 1550 calories and see what happens. Do you think it's bad to average a 2 pd loss a week?

Read the Volumetrics Weight Control Plan, feeling full on fewer calories is the focus of the whole book.

Weight Loss Can I still loose without exercising? Feb 21 2009

While calorie counter gives me my burn estimate, I have to be a little doubtful. I've never been a binger or anything. I am in my early twenties and about 50 pounds overweight. I am pretty sure I have slow metabolism, and I find the gym really gives me energy (low energy is another side effect of low metabolism).

Well long distance is definitely a motivator. I see my boyfriend once every two weeks, so there's a big motivation to lose-I aim to be around 3 pounds lighter each time I see him. But the extra time helps, but what helps the most is being able to make my food choices based on my own concerns, not trying to accommodate anyone. I have housemates but we don't share food or cook for each other.

Vegetarian my best friend started eating meat again... Feb 18 2009

I agree. I was a vegetarian for 17 years, and recently have started eating meat once or twice a month. I don't think things have to be so black and white. I consume WAY less meat than the average person. This keeps my environmental impact lower, but at the same time I don't like the idea of any food being forbidden. I know personally I still seek out vegetarian recipes, restaurants, and friends because even if I don't have that label anymore, the ideals and tastes are still with me.

Last week 170.2

This week 172.2

I'm pretty dissapointed with myself. I went on vacation over the long weekend, and for four days totally lost sight of my larger goals. I found myself eating even when it wasn't pleasurable, and eating without regard to calorie content. One mini-victory is that usually if I'm watching what I eat, and have a slip up, I abandon my life-style changes completely. Now I definitely feel that this is more of a permanent change in my life, and on the plane ride back I was planning low calorie recipes to make. This week so far has been good, and I'm planning on going to the gym today for the first time in a while which shoudl be good for my mood and body. Way to go ladies.

Corn Tortillas (60 calories, not bad at all!)

Black beans

Salsa

Cabbage

Butternut Squash

Reduced fat firm tofu (so much protien for so little calories!)

Reduced Fat Cheddar Cheese

Frozen Blueberries

Skim Milk

Oranges (I find their high water content, and the time it takes to peel them make them extra satisfying)

Whole Wheat Spiral noodles

Miso Soup

Cilantro

Ginger/Garlic

Canned tomatos (use them to bulk up a range of foods, super convinient to have on hand)

Steel Cut Oatmeal (I make a couple of servings at a time and heat up individual servings in the morning) I think it tastes so much better than regular oatmeal

Baby Carrots and Hummus

I need more tips on what to order at restaurants and what to stick to at buffets

Hi All,

I'm new to the thread, and pretty new to Calorie Counters. I am doing volumetrics, while counting calories. I am surprised by how much I lost last week, it's probably because I'm new, right? Anyway, here are my stats...

Age: 23

Height: 5'4

Start Weight: 176

Last week weigh in: 174.2

This week weigh in: 170.8

Ultimate goal: 125

I'm aiming to lose 1.5 pounds a week, would like to lose more, but know it won't stay off that way.

Cabbage, butternut squash, and legumes (especially lentils). You can eat butternut squash and lentils for about $1 a meal and it's low in calories, filling, and full of nutrients. I also like to steam tofu and cabbage and make a dressing for it out of soy sauce, garlic, red pepper flakes, and rice vinegar, this averages out to be around $2-$2.50 for a very low calorie filling meal.

The Weight Control Plan book gets more specific, based on science of how people recognize that they are full. For example, smoothies containing milk signal food intake to your stomache and fill you up, but other similar drinks don't. It is a lot of common sense. I've found the book helpful in that it gets more specific and has a lot of reccomendations, but don't think it's necessary for all people.

There are two books, The Volumetrics Weight Control Plan, and The Volumetrics Eating Plan. I have both, but found the Weight Control Plan book much more helpful. It is longer and explains the science behind the program, as well as gives you many more examples of how to incorporate it into your life. I found the book really helpful, and it's only $6 on amazon. It explains strategies for anticipating social events, building a support system, etc. It's a personal call though. One thing I've noticed is that for lunch I often have a huge plate of food, and I wonder if my coworkers think I'm eating like a pig, when really I'm only consuming 300-400 calories.

I really love it, and do find a lot new with it, although maybe that's in comparison to Weight Watchers which I have done in the past.

Prior, I would watch my calories/points but I would eat a lot of low fat crackers, smaller portions of pasta, etc trying to keep down my calories. Now, I find  I'm so much more satisfied. Eating soup before meals has really been helping me, as has adding fruits and vegetables to about everything I eat (oatmeal, salads, pasta dishes, pizza, etc). I don't feel deprived at all.

I really also like the philosophy that you should continue to eat high calorie foods you love, but just don't expect that to be the source of what fills you up. Before I would save all my calories for something like a piece of cake, and then not feel full after eating the cake, so I would eat more cake or more food in general. Now, I'll eat an orange or something before I go to a birthday party, and then have a little sliver of cake and feel satisfied both in fullness and in my ability to not have to deny myself any foods. I've lost four pounds total (two pounds each week).
