I'm nearly 60 and have yoyo'd all my life.  The only eating plan that has worked for me is low carb in which I eat lean protein at every meal and huge amounts of non starchy vegetables.  Citrus fruit or berries for fruit (lowest sugar content).  It's the sugar that I"m addicted to, so avoiding/eliminating sugar is my number one goal.  Bottom line is everyone needs to find out what works for them and stick with it.  Exercise is good for your heart and soul, but it's not terribly useful to lose weight.  I don't weigh myself or my food and I'm feeling great.  Find out what your "buttons" or "triggers" are and eliminate them.  Find out what makes your life better and embrace it.  Good luck and keep looking until you find it.

I'm so sorry you're struggling with this. I can totally relate. And I've been living with this addiction for 30 years longer than you. I've done several things that didn't work long term: Jenny Craig, counting calories, & on and on. I've done 1 thing that did work for more than the short term: I did Atkins successfully for 13 years. I've recently started following "the smarter science of slim". Similar plans. If sugar and compulsive overeating and an obsession with food (like thinking about it constantly!) are problems for you, you might want to try either of these. You have to find a plan that works for you. Keep looking for YOUR answers. Good luck to you.

Hi Mim49!  I'm with you on this one.  And the chicken potstickers are also MY favorite!  (often sold out in my store too!)

Gee, I feel like the odd one here.  I LOVE the Lean Cuisines.   FOR ME, they are convenient, delicious, and I need the portion control.  If I cook something, I will eat twice as much as I should.  I have a big salad first and then my LC.  Almost every dinner.  But as I always say, everyone should do what works for them.  And since my doctor said "Keep doing what you're doing" after my recent physical, it works for me.

Wow.  There are so many things you can do.  The first is to get a mindset and a goal.  You have to have a destination and direction.  Then you need smaller goals.  I like a 5 pound loss as a goal rather than a 50 pound loss.  50 just seems so far away and 5 pounds seems possible.   Planning your food is part of the direction.  Look up calorie counts so you're not eating anything unless you're aware of what you're doing.  You may choose something that's not the best, but at least you're aware and knowledgable.  For motivation, listen to "Cut the Fat Podcast", or any number of similar podcasts.  Exercise, is a must.  But you can start easy and enjoyable.  I always say that SOMETHING is better than nothing.  Do something.  Move.  Walking is the easiest and something you will be able to do long term.  But if you like groups join a class.  Dance, zumba, try several to find out what you like.  Think of this as an adventure to expand your horizons and improve every day of your life.  Commit every day and enjoy the journey.

What a journey!  Congratulations!

Nothing tastes as good as thin feels.
And isn't it good to enjoy the skin you're in.

Let those good feelings be the motivation to continue your journey.

You CAN do it.  I would suggest smaller goals.  You don't need to walk 10 miles.  You need to walk what you can start with comfortably, maybe 1/2 mile.  Make a plan to gradually increase it over time.  Not too much too fast, or you will (1) injure yourself or (2) burn out too fast.  It really helps to walk with a friend.  Nothing like walking and talking to make the time really fly by.  Or use music you love.  The same idea applies to your weight.  You don't need to lose XXX pounds.  Small goals.  Lose 5 pounds.  That's doable.  It's so much better to have achievements that you can attain.  Good luck.  Make a plan.  Review, evaluate and reformulate.  Take that first step and the others will follow.

Fitness Give me tips for running my 1st 10k? May 05 2012

I agree.  Sounds like you want to run a 10K which is 6.2 miles.  You are now running one mile.  That's really a long way from 6.2 miles.  You will have to be truly motivated.  Are you running the one mile in 10 minutes?  Realize that you will be running for over One Hour.  That puts it more in perspective.  You need to increase your mileage slowly, run regularly, and allow for rest.  It would be helpful to have strength training as well.  You should go on line and read about how to train for a 10K.  You should also plan on doing several 5K's (3.1 miles) and even an 8K (5 miles) before you run the 10K.  You should really have run 6-1/2 to 7 miles at least 2 times before the actual event.  Get a calendar, mark your training plan for each day, drink lots of water, and find a buddy!   I've run many 5K's, 10K's, 1/2 marathon and marathons.  They all take devotion and are absolutely wonderful.  Good luck to you.

I was wondering why others wishes are more valued than your own? Remember that you're the only one responsible for your choices. And ultimately you are the one who benefits or loses from those choices.

I too achieved a long term weight loss (60 lbs) for 13 years, only to spend 2011 on an eating excursion.  The result was 35# gain.  I got on the scale on 1/1/12 and at 180.5 was in shock.  I've lost 27# since then using the old basic tools: counting calories, exercising, weighing, water and support.  I too am older (58) but not exactly geriatric.  You ARE doing it now.  That's what counts.  It's such a better feeling to NOT be thinking of food 24/7.

This sounds like my diet of many years. Started out on Atkins and modified over the 13 years I did it. Then a year of eating like the world was ending and a gain of 30 pounds. I've been counting calories since 1/1/12 and have lost 20 lbs but after stalling for over 2 weeks I've decided to do one week of very low carb and lots of protein. I was able to maintain a 75 lb loss on modified Atkins for so long and then blew it. Low carb works well for many. It did for me and I hope it works for you. Good luck.

I too was a smoker.  I had been dieting and started running.  Still smoking.  I was increasing my mileage and I found that I couldn't break the 3 mile barrier.  I decided it was because of my smoking.  I quit smoking and increased my running, eventually completing the NY Marathon.  I think it helps to have a goal- better health, running a marathon, getting more kisses, whatever.  It also helps to stay away from smokers.  The only time I ever think of smoking and (I get very tempted) is when I drink or am with other smokers.  I stay away from drinking, that's easier than avoiding your friends, but I definitely limit my time with smokers.   I love them, but I value my non-smoking health more.
