mapledreams, it sounds like a meal plan would be helpful for you for the time being. With all of the added stress and obligations of school I find that I quickly forget to take care of myself and fall behind with my food. While having a meal plan can be a pain--like when I have to eat a meal during class--it makes it much easier for me to meet my calorie needs without detracting too much from my ability to do school and live my life. |

I have been vegetarian for years for environmental/ethical reasons and also am in recovery for an eating disorder. The fact that you are asking here indicates to me that being vegan is at least partially driven by ED. Becoming a vegan was the first manifestation of my eating disorder, so I am familiar with this issue. I did it for the "right" (non-ED) reasons, but I found that it was a part of the disorder. I have remained vegetarian because I have never questioned my intention in that respect, but being vegan is just not in my best interest as a recovering anorexic. If you are very concerned about the footprint that your food has, try to buy local and organic dairy when you can. If it is out of your price range, as this can get expensive, please cut yourself some slack. I know it is hard to do something that is against your principals, but in the end, it is much better for you to eat the dairy than cut it out and hold yourself back from fully recovering.

mashed_tatties: Have you tried setting drink limits for yourself before going out? I usually do not let myself exceed 2 drinks when I am out. My tolerance is much lower than everyone else's because I did not drink for so long and if I don't keep track I find myself far too drunk. That way you don't feel left out/bored but also are not putting yourself in a bad situation. |

Resist the grossness and guilt you feel for not exercising. No matter what, if you want to gain weight, exercising is the last thing you should do. It won't change how you gain the weight or what metabolism you'll end up with, it will only perpetuate the problem and make it harder to recover sooner. I excessively exercised until I was so weak I could not even walk up a flight of stairs. You are heading there. If you don't want to lose your muscle forever, take a break, gain weight and slowly reincorporate exercise when you can eat to maintain your weight. I have not done any exercise for over a year and have been trying to gain and I am still not anywhere near overweight (I am at a technically healthy BMI but still trying to gain). If you have a nutritionist/team that you are working with, it helps to alleviate some of the anxiety about uncontrollably gaining weight. Being on a meal plan will help ensure that you eat enough. Having a team monitoring you will help you feel comfortable that you will not continue gaining forever. |

kbryson7: I am also a student living alone and I find myself with a lot of time on my hands that gets taken up by loneliness and depression. I have found that it is helpful to make a list of non-computer "things to do" for when I am just sitting around (or worse and indulging in my ED obsessions). I struggle a lot with obsessive thoughts and find it really difficult to get myself out of those modes, especially when on the computer, so having a list of activities already made makes it easier to come up with ideas when I am in that place. My list currently includes: read for pleasure, write in my journal, listen to a podcast, listen to music and dance around my room, listen to music and knit/crochet (or learn another craft!), write letters to people, do art, clean my room/other part of house, watch a movie....I hope this is a good start! zebulancherry: I remember you from when I first started lurking on this site--it is so inspirational to hear that you are doing well, thanks for the words (and foods) of encouragement! Today: B: C muesli, C plain yogurt, pear S: oatmeal raisin walnut clif bar L: C ww fusilli, kale sauteed in olive oil with garlic, lentils, 1/4C grated parmesan cheese S: trail mix D: omelet with spinach, onion, cheddar cheese, hot sauce; 2 sl flax toast with butter, apple juice S: pita stuffed with crunchy peanut butter and dried fruit |

Met with my nutritionist today, was not so good. I am adding a mid-morning snack and another component to my evening snack. It is so hard--even though I know I need the food increasing my meal plan is always really challenging. I have been struggling a lot with obsessive thoughts recently which is partially why I need to increase, but it also is really distracting me from everyday life. glittersandsprinkles and fillmeup: I went grocery shopping on Sunday and almost cried in the store because of the anxiety it provokes. I have found that setting a time limit for myself helps with the indecision. And remember, if you choose to buy something that you end up not liking, the other options are still going to be there next time you go shopping! Today: B: C oats, 1/4C mixed unsalted nuts, C plain yogurt, grapes S: chocolate chip peanut crunch clif bar L: wrap with tofu, 2 tbsp soy sauce+peanut butter+sriracha, spinach S: 1/4C trail mix D: C whole wheat fusilli with lentils and kale sauteed in olive oil + garlic, 1/4C parmesan cheese on top; pear with peanut butter S: flax toast with butter; shake with soymilk+vanilla protein powder+peanut butter

mapledreams, daydream, etc.: I have let my ED guide my food choices for so long that I don't even know what I want or like anymore. I am like a little kid trying all kinds of foods for the first time and determining whether or not I like them. It has taken me a long time to really taste the foods I eat (as opposed to just chewing and swallowing because I had to) and it has been really fun to find out what I like/don't like again! Well, not as much with the don't like--it does kind of suck to order something in a restaurant only to find out that you don't like X food in it, but when I get something new that I like it is really exciting. |
