Vegetarian Brussel Sprouts Feb 03 2008

1kkatt, I'm laughing out loud.

frisky, I love broiled brussel sprouts. Par boil them for ~5min then wrap them in foil with a very small amount of butter (say 2 small pats of butter) and a small amount of salt and pepper. The insides cook to the consistency of mashed potatoes while the outside stays firmer. The best part is that the surfaces that are in contact with the butter almost carmelize. Very tasty.

Also, for asparagus, try roasting young, crisp thin stalks in a small amount of olive oil, a clove of garlic, minced and salt and pepper.

Additionally, I'd like to second both the "fake meat" (Morningstar bacon and buffalo wings rock) and adding protein, in the form of textured vegetable protein (TVP or soy protein granules) or silken tofu.

Morningstar corn dogs were mentioned above. I'd only recommend them if your son doesn't first eat the breading off and then the dog, like my daughter. (I recall the day my wife and I tried to feed her one of those. She ate the breading took one bite of the dog and stated that it tasted "funny".)

Vegetarian The smell of meat...good or bad? Feb 03 2008

Hm. I've been a lacto-ovo vegetarian for around 13 years. I think part of whether or not the smell (or meat in general) bothers someone boils down to their views on the subject. I don't eat meat but I also don't have an issue prepping a chicken for roasting and soup. First and foremost I don't appreciate the waste and negative impact on the planet that goes into producing meat on a commercial scale. Overall I think I'm an exception to the rule in the vegetarian community.

Oh, and to answer the question, no I don't think meat smells bad. (I've read a bit about food and beer/wine pairing and sometimes feel I'm missing out but the social implications are too much for me.) Though I have to admit that when my wife grills in the house I don't appreciate how the smells seems to linger afterwords.
