Weight Loss Plateau for 6 months. Should I give up? Jun 18 2010

I can't say I'm in the exact same circumstances as you.   I'm 5'1" and I started at 160 in Feburary of 2009 and lost 20 pounds between then and September.  I've been hovering around 140 since then, so for the last 8 months.

And yes, it's bloody frustrating (but you knew that).  I've been told I'm a very patient person, but whenever I see a post in these forums screaming: "I haven't lost anything in 2 weeks!!!!!!  How do I break this plateau?" I have to restrain myself from biting their heads off.  I've kind of accepted that I'm one of those people who have a hard time losing weight.  Giving up isn't an option because I know that if I do the weight will come back, and I'm so much happier with my body at 140 than I was at 160.

I have no additional advice to offer.  I think though that eating more seems like a reasonable course of action in your case.  Good luck!

i've been as low as 138 (once) and i tend to hover around 140-142 for the past.... 3-4 months? i'm also 5'3 and 30 years old. I do not log every morsel I eat and I have tended to eat a little bit too much every day and exercise a little less than I'd like to.  I keep thinking that if i just tried a little bit harder, ate a little bit less at night, etc. etc it will happen.....

now i'm doing NROWLFW (resistance training) and i just started logging calories again and i'm aiming for about 1700/day.

I know some people who have had success with a 3-day rotating diet (ie. 3 meal plans they rotate, so basically eat the same thing every 3rd day) but I am way too "whimsical" and I like variety.  So i am "winging it" mostly.

So yeah, never "give up" because eventually you'll figure it out. and like i said before, healthy habits, and a healthy body, doesnt have to change over night! and it doesn't have to be a size 8!

Sometimes inner beauty and self confidence is great to have and the weight will eventually fall off.

and i also think you've been not eating enough and maybe relying on your bodybugg too much.

I highly reccomend the "FAT 2 FIT" radio show podcast. I love it.  They give great advice and i've never disagreed with anything they say.  and it's free!

I read FAT WARS by Brad King, although a little TOO much information for some people it was a very good look into how the chemicals in our body store, make and use FAT.

New Rules of Lifting for Women is really easy to understand and gives you a really good "easy to follow" plan of resistance training.  Only 5 moves every other day.  And really leaves you with a good feeling of being 'strong' and 'achieving' muscle strength.

Those are the 3 suggestions I would make.

Un-Suggestions (things i do not recommend)

1. fitness magazines. they are a vehicle for selling supplements.  That's all they are. Save your money.

2. Skinny Bitch.  This book is dumb and full of hype and "old wives tales"

3. Jillian Michaels "boost your metabolism" that book is filled with chemical-phobia. I wouldn't waste your time on this either.

Cloudy sunshine vagina!? That sounds like the actual medical description of a yeast infection.

Atleast they didn't dump a cup of cottage cheese in her lap and have her scratching at it!!!

LOL!

what do you mean by "give up"?

i'm really sorry that this is happening to you. are you eating whole foods and lots of fiber and grains or mostly high-carb/glycemic processed foods? You might find that cutting down on sugars and fats might help.

I dunno what to tell ya.... sheesh.... mathmatically you should be losing. but i also know that insulin has a lot to do with fat burning weight loss. A book i know of that details the exact mechanisms of fat loss is "FAT WARS" by Brad King.  It may be a little daunting but read it and hopefully it will give you some insight to maybe what you're doing wrong. It details the horomonal balance you want to achieve through meal planning and meal timing and effective exercise schedules.

Also, do you do any resistance training or just cardio?  Some people say low-intensity cardio for long periods doesn't work very well.  But it should do "something" because "movement=energy use"!!!!

You seem to be eating a little too little.  You say you zig-zag your calories. Try zagging up to 2000 once a week or something. That might help your body to let go of some fat by not feeling starved.

How many times a day do you eat? if you are eating the most of your calories at night in one big meal that would be a bad thing that would not be putting you on the right track.

ask your doctor and get a blood test.... are you on medications?

if your doctor gives you any weirdo information (eat 1000 calories a day?) get a second opinion. ive heard some doctors give bad advice!!!!!

other than that, don't 'give up'.

you may not be losing weight but you are healthier and happier, don't you get a buzz off of endorphins after your workout, glowing skin, better sleep, and a sense of pride in eating well and knowing you're treating your body with the utmost of care?

do you always weigh yourself at the same time every day?

day vs. night can be a significant change

I have no nother explanation but hey, take it when it comes and sometimes you'll find you don't budge for weeks even months....  so you won the lotto this week....

Also: as a side note 2lbs / week is significant.... don't expect that to last forever :)

i don't touch on anorexic posts and i try my darndest not to even read them.  If i could somehow block out all ED related posts and people I would. And i wish that this place was more geared to weight loss than weight gain, but it's not a perfect world and I'm not in charge.

I have a limited amount of compassion/patience for people who are sick with this disorder, and this is certainly not the place they should be coming to get help. Eating disorders (in my opinion) have nothing to do with EATING.  If you have this disorder you probably shouldn't be sitting around reading the articles etc. on this site, you should be focusing on some other topic.  Trying to get AWAY from online chit-chat that focuses around your disorder and becoming buddy-buddy with other disordered people.  You should be making efforts to hang around with friends and family and non-disordered eaters.  Kinda like the "AA" thing - seek out people who don't drink! Don't flirt with temptations! And if you're going to admit that you are doing self harm (and you certainly know you are) you're only going to get mean or negative comments because anything that doesn't congratulate you is going to be considered "mean".  But that's just MY opinion..... and it's not directed AT anyone here.

But as for your run-of-the-mill  "cabbage soup" or "wedding diet" (quick fix, little effort, diet questions) you're always going to get the people who reiterate the healthy information,  the sarcastic people, and the meanies.  That's just life.  You should take the information and do more research,  roll your eyes at sarcasm, and ignore 'meanies'.

All this can be summed up in my first reaction: if you ask stupid questions, you will get stupid answers.

so.... i've only eaten 400 calories today... but i'm not hungry..... Herrmmm..... now what? Should I panic? Am I gonna die? plz help.... i'm desperate (just kidding :P) lol

i am guilty of wearing my 'good' running shoes 'all day at work' but i stand all day and dammit they're comfy!

i need new shoes, but im waiting 'til i go to the states on canada day (july 1st) to get my new pair. i hear they're a lot cheaper in the states.  here a new pair of saucony's are 140-170$$ yikes

then i won't be guilty... and i'll save my 'new' pair for at the gym.

i only started buying "expensive' running shoes last year i only have two pairs and one pair doesn't fit that great so i don't wear them much, they rub too much. they're too big.... from when i was a newbie. i'm a 7 not a 7.5! :)

maybe you ate .7 lb of food and then pooped out .4 of a pound

maybe you wore different, denser material pants

maybe you drank a glass of water.... and had your cell phone in your pocket before

maybe you were leaning a little bit more to the left last time

maybe your scale is trying to mess with your head

WHAT I'M TRYING TO SAY IS .3 OF A LB IS NOT EVEN WORTH CONTEMPLATING!!!!

is it a lot of poison ivy? i have it in my yard and this year i sprayed a whole bottle of round-up on it and it kinda shrivelled up and died.

Maybe you could hire a lawn company to deal with it, dig it up and dispose of it.

are you saying you get allergic reaction even if you don't even touch it or go near it?

just stay away from it - that's what i do.
