@joaree, I haven't noticed, but that is crazy! I realized the other day that in a couple month it will be 2 years since I started posting in this thread. I think that's crazy too. @burton, that might be true. I think that is probably why carb and calorie cycling helps some people. It changes things up a bit. |

@Burton, counting might help at least for a couple days. You might be eating more or less than you thought. Sometimes not eating enough can be detrimental to weight loss too. I agree with Sara with the calorie cycling thing, that might help. I also have a problem with snacking and am trying to cut back a little. I say this as I am eating popcorn though, haha. @Sara, mine is a rain or sunshine type too. You're in Florida though so chances are pretty good that it will stop. I kind of miss Florida rain. It rained every day in Tampa, but it was usually really short. When it rains here in Virginia, it lasts all day. |

@burton, how many calories are you eating? Maybe it is time to switch up the amount you are eating if nothing else seems to be working. |

The second 800m run is going to be killer after the box jumps. Last week we had 3 rounds of an 800m run and 50 squats. The run was so hard after doing the first set of squats. We haven't done muscle ups yet since I have started so I am not even sure what they are. I can't do ring dips either though. I thought the burger would be something you would like. You seem to make stuff like that a lot. Here is the recipe: http://allrecipes.com/recipe/quinoa-black-bea n-burgers/

@joaree, it was definitely a boost. I agree that scales can be motivating for losing weight. It used to be that way for me, but lately using the scale has been disappointing. Your lunch sounds like it will be delicious! Except for the mushrooms. I don't like mushrooms. @Sara, I think for now I might do once a week, but I want to slowly move away from it and get down to once a month. I put my scale under my bed so that I will be less tempted to weigh myself. What is your WOD today? The box jumps last night went well! I think I got over my fear of box jumps. I ended up doing 85 of them by time the workout was over. After crossfit I made some homemade veggie burgers. It was the first time I have ever made them from scratch and they were delicious. I mixed mashed up black beans, a serving of cooked quinoa, bread crumbs, an egg, and spices and then just cooked them on the stove. I brought one for lunch today so I hope they reheat well. |

@Sara, that makes me feel a little bit better. I really don't care about the number on the scale too much. I care a little bit right now because I am a couple pounds overweight for our height and would like to be back in the healthy range, but I mostly just want to look/feel better. It's kind of funny that the reason I bought a scale in the first place was because I lost a lot of weight my first year of college and didn't even know it and I didn't believe people when they told me I looked like I lost weight. I didn't see a difference in myself so I bought the scale to have a way for me to see a difference. I wish I had never done that because now I am dependent on it. Maybe I will just put it somewhere where it would be a hassle to get it out and then weigh myself less often. |

@Joaree, today's workout plan sounds really good. That's good to not dwell on one bad week. Plus, sometimes I think that having a week off sometimes helps jump start weight loss. I don't have any recipes for peanut sauce, but it sounds delicious. Maybe try pinterest? My weight is still really high right now and it is starting to worry me. I am pretty sure the extra 2-3 pounds came on overnight so I wasn't worried at first, especially since I was so sore. I assumed that it was water weight from my workouts and would go away with the soreness. The soreness has gone away though and my weight is still the same. My weekend plans were ruined by the rain. I didn't get to go hiking or kayaking. I will this weekend though if it is nice enough. I am going to try to do at least one of the two every weekend, even if I have to go by myself. Tonight's workout: The name of the workout is 'Danny'. It is as many rounds as possible (AMRAP) in 20 minutes of 30 box jumps, 20 push presses, and 30 pull ups. Box jumps make me nervous since I am small and clumsy. I thought about skipping today and just going tomorrow instead, but I can't avoid box jumps forever so I might as well do it today. Plus, I would like to work on my pull ups in hopes that one day I won't need to use the bands to do it. Side note: I went to a strip club for the first time this weekend and the upper body strength that strippers have is exremely impressive. I aspire to have the upper body strength of a stripper. One did a bunch of pull ups on a bar and it looked effortless. Another walked across the stage on her hands. |

@Burton, I have been waking up early too, but it is at awkward times like 4am so I just go back to sleep. That's good you were able to fit in a workout in the morning. My arms are feeling much better today. My weight is still up though. I am guessing it will go down a bit after having a rest day and 2 days of lighter activity. I think the plan is still to go hiking tomorrow. It is in this area (without mountains) though so it is mostly flat walking. It is to a waterfall though and I hear that it is a pretty sight. Sunday I might go kayaking. For lunch today I had a salad with quinoa in it. I had never tried cold quinoa before so I wasn't sure if I would like it. Also, other than caesar salads, I only eat salads with fruit toppings and sweet dressing so I was nervous to try a more vegetable based salad, but it was pretty good. It was just lettuce, quinoa, half a cucumber, black olives, and balsamic vinaigrette. The quinoa isn't really very noticeable, but I think it is a good way to add some calories when the calories are too low for the salad to count as a meal. |

Have you looked into community centers in your area? Where I live now, there is a community center that is free for residents and they have a pretty good weight room. Where I used to live it was only $40 a year for students. I am not sure what full price is, but it was definitely cheaper than a typical gym. |

My arms are so sore from crossfit this week. I can barely straighten them. When I weighed in this morning, my weight was really high. I am pretty sure it is just water weight because my muscles are so sore, but it still sucks seeing a higher number. I should get rid of my scale while my body is getting used to crossfit, but I have a hard time with not weighing. I have become a little dependent on my scale. I haven't even lost weight in a long time, I mostly just need it to make sure I am not gaining. Crossfit tonight is 3 rounds of an 800m run followed by 50 squats. I am glad we won't be using arms for anything tonight. |

@Sara, on days when I count, I think I have been staying between 1600 and 1800. I just wanted to make sure that wasn't too much. I need to get better with counting consistently though and I need to start cooking more often. Todays meals and snacks are pretty healthy. My only problem with eating healthy is that I am not consistent enough so I am going to try working on that a little more. I don't mind eating healthy, the preparation/cooking is the problem. I am going grocery shopping tonight so I think I am going to try looking up recipes and then maybe start planning meals in advance so that I can just pack everything for the week on Sunday and not have to prepare during the week. I think I might also make a cookbook to make it easier to decide what I want to eat. The weather is nice this weekend so I think we are planning on going hiking on Saturday. On Sunday I am going to see if my roommate wants to go kayaking. If not, I might just go by myself. I want to try staying active on weekends. Tonight's workout for crossfit is deadlifts and handstand push-ups. |

I was able to finish 10 rounds in 20 minutes at crossfit last night. So that is 50 pull ups (using bands to assist), 100 push ups (after a while I had to switch to my knees), and 150 squats! |

@joaree, it sounds like you have been doing great with your workouts! @Sara, that's great you are enjoying nice weather! The weather has been weird here, but I am hoping it will get nice out soon so that I can enjoy being outside. I don't really like smoothies very much, but that's great that you are feeling better! How many calories are you aiming for now? I am trying to figure out how much I should be eating with crossfit. @burton, I am having trouble losing weight too. I know I don't eat as healthy as I should, but I don't eat very terribly either. I am hoping that consistently working out now will help me lose weight. Maybe try taking walks during your lunch break? That will help break up your day so that you aren't just sitting for 8 hours straight. And yeah, my crossfit workouts have been better. I think just those two days last week were just to test progress, it sounds like they have them every once in a while. I think I will enjoy them when I have been doing it for a while, but they just don't seem like good beginner workouts. I went to crossfit on Thursday. The workout was really short, but it was pretty tough. We had to switch back and forth with 10 ring dips (i put my hands on a box and my feet on another and did dips that way since I am not strong enough for rings yet) and 10 floor presses (a bench press, but on the floor) for 5 minutes. Then we had a two minute break and then did another 5 minutes. In the 10 minutes I was able to do 5 rounds so about 50 of each exercise. My arms were so tired when I was done and they were pretty sore for the next two days. Tonight's workout is 5 pull ups, 10 push ups, and 15 squats. We have to do as many rounds as we can in 20 minutes.

@Burton, diet is what I am struggling with too. I always will have a few good days, and then I ruin it with a few bad days. Crossfit is increasing the frequency and intensity of my workouts though so I hope that will help off set my bad diet days. @Joaree, it gets really hot in the summer and I do go in the springs, but even with how hot it is, it still feels really cold when you first get in. Great job losing 3 pounds! I am hoping to start seeing some weight loss soon. I would even be happy with losing half a pound a week as long as I am showing some progress. Last night's workout was good. As was expected, my legs are a little sore. I was originally planning on going again tonight, but it seems like this week is a strength testing week. Tonight's workout is establishing a 1 rep max for a clean. Most workouts aren't like this. I think it is just a progress review type thing. I wasn't very good at a clean so I don't think I would be able to do it with any weight until I get the proper form down. It might be a good idea to go tonight just to be able to practice the form, but right now I am only paying for 3 workouts a week instead of unlimited so I want to make sure that when I do go, it is for a good workout. I think I might do a Jillian Michael's workout tonight and then tomorrow hopefully they will have a workout that is good for beginners. |

@Sally, that's good you are getting closer to having an answer. I have never done yoga, but if you want a class you might want to try looking into one at a community center. They seem to be cheaper than actual yoga places. @joaree, The hike sounds fun! I have never been to a hot pool before. Where I am from in Florida, they only have cold springs. I would love to go to a hot one. @oleh, it's good to hear from you! Great job with the half marathon! I don't think I could do a half marathon. The crossfit workout last night didn't seem like a very good one so I didn't go. The workout was just to establish a one rep max for a strict press. I think that is meant to test your progress to see if your heaviest weight is higher than last time. Since I am a beginner, I don't really think it is a good time to try to lift the heaviest possible weight. Tonight's workout seems much better. It is 5 rounds for time of a 100 meter sprint and 10 overhead squats. Once we finish those 5 times then it is 5 times for a 100 meter sprint again, but this time followed by front squats. I think my legs are going to be killing me tomorrow. That is 100 squats total by time the workout is complete! |

@Burton, weekends are always a toss up with me too. I am going to try to be more active on the weekends though when the weather is nice. I want to go hiking and kayaking. @Joaree, that sounds like a good idea to not risk the stair jogs before hiking. It would probably make it harder to keep up with your group if you are sore. Have fun hiking! I am hoping to go sometime this month. Last night I had my first real crossfit workout! Everything so far has just been the intro/foundations. Last night we jump roped 400 times, did 25 deadlifts, 400 meter run, 25 push presses, another 400m run, 10 snatches, and 25 burpees pull ups. For the burpee pull ups, I just did the burpee part. I am too short to reach the bar even when jumping up and even if I was able to reach the bar I can't do a pull up anyways. I finished everything in about 23 minutes though. I was pretty proud of myself. I am a bit sore today. I am pretty sure I am going to be really sore tomorrow. I always hurt the worst 2 days after a workout. |

@Joaree, I love quinoa! I know there are a lot of interesting ways to cook with it because I see recipes on pinterest all the time, but I usually just cook it on the stove in broth and add broccoli to the pot when it is almost done to steam the broccoli. Then I just add a little bit of garlic salt, lemon pepper, and parmesan cheese. I think it is delicious. Look on pinterest though for recipes. @cmcgavock1, welcome! |
