Weight Loss How to loose weight when your already not eating enough? Jan 25 2011

Original Post by simpleblink44:

I've been wanting to loose about 5-10 pounds of extra weight, so I decided to do a little research on a good way to do so. As I have I've came across lots of places saying not to eat under 1500 calories a day. If you do you will messes up your metabolism.. its saving your body.. ect.

The thing is I've been eating 800-1000 calories a day my whole life. I'm not anorexics, I am a vegetarian and eating 200-300 calories in a meal. I eat 3 meals a day and a few snacks. There was a short time when I was 11 that I thought I was fat, and tried dieting and calorie counting. Then my average calorie consumption was also 800 - 1000 a day. I never gained of lost weight then, I just became aware of what i was eating. I get around 35g or protein and 30g of fat a day, I think that my protein is probably low and my fat might be a little high since it seems like I'm not eating that much.

My mother told me when I was a baby I had failure to thrive.. I don't know exactly what that is but it has something to do with nutrition.. Through my teens I always though what I was eating was right, and I've never been underweight or overweight. But, well, I have noticed after a large meal or going out to eat a lot I would gain weight, but always loose that in a week or so.

I've been exercising regularly for the past few years. A brisk 30 minute walk 4-5 times a week. Plus a few situps, pushups and squats every morning. But over the past two years I've gain 20 pounds, and would like to loose about 5-10 pounds just to fit in some of my old clothes.

Fining this very odd I'm wondering if my metabolism is messed up and how to fix it. I would like to eat 1500 - 2000 calories without gaining a few pound in a matter of days, and would also like to loose a few pounds to zip up my jeans.

I'm curently 125 pounds and 5'1". All of the diet plans that people say are heathy require 1500 calories+ , if I was to eat 1500 a day I most likely would gain a ton of weight. I just don't know what to do. Any advise or ideas would be wonderful.

There are some variables you might want to consider when calculating your daily intake.

What is your age, height, body type(ie. small boned, etc) and your activity level.  Mind  you, you do mention your exercise regime

Did you find out what YOU need each day.  This site can calculate it for you.

Take me, I'm 56, and according to the information offered here I have a large frame.  You wouldn't think so to look at me.  but, for using the numbers offered here, apparently I am.  I thought I was a medium build and when I found out I had the large frame that added about 100 calories to my day.

Are you on any medications that might be part of the weight gain?  I am pretty sure one of my new meds can cause weight!  None to happy about that.

Hope me going on about me (lol) has been of some help!

So glad to see this thread still going strong!  Just to show you how long this thread has been going I was 53 when I started it and am now the ripe ol' age of 55!  So happy I could be part of something helpful to so many.  You go girls!

Hope all ladies here are well.   As some of the first visiters knows I had to leave as I was becoming obsessesed, which is in my genes, so to speak.

Just coming out of a major depression which felt like it lasted forever.  Of course it was only a few months, but those who know depression know what several months of depression can feel like an eternity.

Had even stopped working out for over three months.  Was back at a friend's gym;not the one I ususally go, last night and it felt great.

I wish to all who visit a wonderfully serene, focused and successful 2010-whatever that means to you.

G*d Bless

Weight Loss I'm back with the same issues Jun 27 2009

Y'know I eat basically the same things day in and day out.

Salads and oatmeal with p.b. & yogourt make up my daily intake.  I rarely vary from this.

Would I have better luck if I were to change up my diet from time to time.  Like exercise, if you do the same ones all the time their results get lessened.

Is this the same with diet

And in my salads I have my different lettuces, cucs' carrots, protein (chicken, tuna, or cottage cheese.  Or sometimes I do the vegetarin one with almonds, and I count them out, raisins, and sunflower seeds.

Any ideas ladies?

Increase your activity level to 'moderate' but don't add the exercise on top... because it's now already included.  Good tip.... rather than sporadic excessive exercise interspersed with nothing at all, try to do a moderate amount of exercise every day.

Do try to get 'unblocked'... drink extra fluids, eat more leafy greens and other vegetables, make sure you're getting plenty of fats in the diet.... because that's going to help your body get rid of waste more efficiently

I eat lots of fruits and veggies.  As for upping my activity level to moderate, well, when I calculated the number of calories a woman my age needs per day it was over 1600 and that was without exercise.

That's why I upped my caloric intake to 1600, from 1450.  This also happens to represent a light activity level, unlike what was explained on the calories needed-which by the way is on this site.  So I do add all my activities in.

Even though the scale says more, my clothes still fit the way they did 8 or so pounds ago.

I'll keep an eye on it, and if things start not to fit or the #'s really change, I'll dial down my intake.

You're right there are too many variables for any site here on the internet to be even remotely close.  I do believe I was feeling better (about me) before the internet.  I just knew what was healthy, what I had to eat and did so.  I'm pretty much doing the same now, except I've added some healthy fats, like organic p.b. and sunflower seeds, flax seed meal.  AND I do weigh these so I am not overdoing it.

I better start being happy with myself now or I'll never be.  I've been mistook for a trainer on more than one occasion.  I guess I am least happy with my middle.  At 54, almost 55 it just doesn't look like it did 6 or 7 years ago.

OK, I'll stop whining.  I'm not drinking anymore, so I can't even enjoy a nice cheese with my 'whine'.  LoL!

I need to up my water intake-again.  I tend to fall back on that.

Today, I'm going to pick up this stuff called WHOLY TEA,  which  detoxifies the liver and bowels.  I used it before and it did work-for a while.  I found I  have to change up my products on a regular basis.

I could tell I was bloated by my tummy and when I got on the scale at the gym I was up more than five pounds-in four days!

Hopefully, things will change for the better starting today-or tomorrow.  Would you like me to let you know?

Fitness Burn Meter Apr 20 2009

The calulator here subtracts the number of calories you would be burning even if you were at home just sitting around.

So, for me, I use 400 calories at one of my workouts in an hour.  From that my hourly rate is subracted, making it a grand total of 340 EXTRA calories i burned.  I questioned this, too, a few months back.  I couldn't understand how my activity level/calories burned did not equal to the amount said.

Do remember that you calories burned during and after cardio are still burning.  HOWEVER, if you really want to see results you MUST be weight training as that burns calories for hours and hours after you've actually finished your work out.

I don't know HOW to calculate this, however.  I don't know how long my own body metabolizes these calories, as everyone is different, and it depends on the intensity with which you burn.

Eg.  yesterday I did 75 minutes of weights, including stability ball routines.  Then I ran on the track for 43 minutes at 10mph.  HOW do I really figure all that out?  I don't know.

AND, to make things more confusing-sorry about this-a member wrote and said the calories stated here are not accurate, according to her heart rate monitor!

OY!
I don't get it.  Since we've been told even an extra 50 or 100 calories a day can get you to gain weight-why are these numbers not more accurate, right!

I say let's ban together and demand more precise calculations!

I for one, will start.  I'll be mailing this message to one of the moderators/owners of this site.

Whose behind me here???

30 min jog (about 3 miles) on monday, wed, thursday, saturday
10-20 min jog tues, thurs
strength train arms 30-1hr monday, thursday
strength train legs 30-1hr tues, fri

i try to be more active, but.. yeah....

YOU sound like me!  When I am NOT working out I am hardly moving at all.  However I do work out 4-5x weekly for two hours, at least 1 1/2 hours each time.

So, and I agree with you, what does that make us?  I change up from sedentary to low activity.  I like to add my calories burned from my workouts and don't know if I can do that with honest results when I up my activity level.

Yet, when I do the calories I need on any given day, w/o exercise it does give the amount in the burn meter!  Then it says if I work out for 60 minutes every day I could go up to as much as 2000 and lose a pound a week.  Well, I never eat that, as far as I know.

Someone on  here said the calories burned section is off by a good 30%.  She gave me her example and it went like this:  her HRM - heart rate monitor - gave her a #of 317 for a certain exercise while the numbers here gave the #377!  That a huge difference!

So if we can't trust this site to be even close to accurate how is someone supposed to gauge themselves?

so how active am i? (strength training is easy- no sweat btw)

Fitness activity level upped & adding exercises & calories burned? Apr 08 2009

Thanks for answering, wallpaper.

When I work out I do so pretty vigorously and I work out for a good two hours, at the very least one and a half hours.  That's four or five times a week, which, I guess is why it was suggested to up my level.  Not getting enough nurtients & calories can hinder the results I am looking for, which is to be a couple pounds less and definetly quite LEAN!  That's why I upped my protein intake as well, and lowered my fat intake.  Even though all my fats were healthy, from organic p.b. and sunflower seeds, flax seeds, etc.  I still cut down on those.

I'm 54 and am 5'3".  So getting to where I want to be is a lot more difficult than it was even five or six years ago.  Darn!

Ego and vanity, whatever would we do without a little of these in our lives?  LoL!

Weight Loss detox diet? Apr 04 2009

Detoxes aren't for losing weight. They are for cleaning out your system. Which is ridiculous, because your liver and kidneys do that just fine (unless they don't - then see a doctor).

In other words - won't help you lose weight (except an initial loss of water weight, plus less food in your belly than you normally have) and won't help "clean you out" any more than a sensible diet of fruits, veggies, whole grains, and lean meats.

I'm drinking a detox tea called Wholy tea.

It's supposed to help with my digestion, colon and liver.  I think it is starting to help with getting rid of some of the build up in my digestive system.  As for the liver, I really don't know what to look for.

My palms are not red and blotchy like they used to be.  However I am also some substances I used to be on.

btw: Has anyone here every heard of or used this Wholy Tea themselves?  Let me know,OK?

Weight Loss protein question Apr 02 2009

Have you thought about using a protein powder to make a protein drink?  Look for one high in protein, low in carbs and fats.

A good powder would have at least 20 - 25 mg. of protein per serving.  Then you can, if you like add some egg whites (the ones in the cartons are pasturized and you CAN eat them raw, like in your shake).

The rest is really up to you.  Add some fruit yogurt or if you're really watching and counting calories, just water or skim milk.

I know I find it difficult to consume in foods enough protein as I work out about 4-5x a week and do weight training on all those days as well as cardio.'

hope this helps out a bit.

p.s. to anyone out there who says eating proper foods for protein is the best way to go.  I know!  I find it difficult to eat that much protein every day on a regular basis.

time will tell.  Do as much as you can since the benefits for cardio are much more than just weight control.  Even taking a walk at lunch in addition to the cardio you can fit in is better than nothing, yes?

Good luck~

Fitness Interested in using a pedometer. Any input? Apr 02 2009

what makes up 10,000 steps?

On days I work out 4-5x a week, I am either on the elliptical for 40-50 minutes OR running/jogging on the track and sometimes the treadmill.

What would the mileage be for 10,000 steps.  I know the stride has what to do with it.  Just a general understanding would help.  AND does anyone really count their steps, if they don't have a pedometer?

On days I am not working out it would be unhealthy for me to have a 500 cal. deficit.

Would it be a good idea to have a >500 on days I do workout to even it out throughout the week.  I do w/o 4 - 5x a week.  Each time is at least 1 1/2  -  2 hours.

As far as the 'sedentary' I put that since I days I don't go to the gym I am usually pretty sedentary, in as far as cardio goes.

Weight Loss Working out EVERYDAY? Mar 31 2009

On days I don't go to the gym I've been working with the stability ball at home.  Nothing too stenuous.  Come the summer I'll be doing some running outside, too.  I have started to do yoga one day a week and pilates one day a week.

Honestly?  I don't know from balance.  I go all out.  I find if I take off more than one day in between my w/o days, I find it difficult to go back.

Since I do a lot when I am working out, I DO need to remember I don't have to do more or better than the time before.

Today I was on the elliptical for over an hour, working at a pretty good pace.  And then close to an hour with weights and then some stretching and stability.  Tomorrow I'll go a bit easier on myself.   I like to change it up so my body doesn't really know what to expect from one time to the next.  I also run on the track and will start treadmill tomorrow.

I agree that I feel much better on days I do work out.  And I do have less of an appetite.  On days I don't work out I eat out of boredom.

once I get to like a food, I eat it non-stop.

Yes, most of them have been healthy, and yet to eat something every day, day in/day out is a bit weird.

Now, I am on t his vanilla yogurt, organic p.b./sunflower seed/fax seed combo.  Sounds healthy, right?  Well, try counting how many calories and grams of fat are in that!

I was eating this at least twice a day.  And I'm not talking about small portions.  I talkin' big heavy duty portions.  Had convinced myself it was OK.  That is until I really added up all those calories.  Wow!

I've been through bran muffins/yogurt AND p.b. on multi-grain toast, poached eggs with olives, tomatoes & Cucumber dressing.

I eat unti I get sick of it, which can take anywhere from a couple of months to well over a year or two.   I'm trying to cut down even more on my intake of my present foods.

I'm working out and weight training and would like to see some MORE definition.  I'm making it more difficult for t he muscles to pop.  And yet, I feel pulled toward eat this stuff of late.

I know the feeling of what you all speak of, for sure!

Weight Loss Let's say I've been being an idiot. Undereating. Mar 27 2009

Original Post by kat56:

So, this month, I have been being very bad. I have been undereating. I began March 1st at 120 lbs(5'2), and it's March 26th and I'm 111. Average daily intake.. Which I am perfectly aware is unhealthy: 800. I have disordered eating tendencies which have been with me since my teens. I am 21. I had to watch my father get sick and die in our living room within a month this last January. Full time student, part time job. Stress beyond my own comprehension. Feelings of lack of control have spiraled into the urge to control my weight.

I wish to remedy this without gaining back the ten pounds in the blink of an eye. Do I slowly move up the count to 1200? Will I gain then? How much? How can I help the urge to binge that is surely on it's way?

I want to fix this, not hear about how I've been doing it wrong. I know exactly what I've done and while I may not want to, am willing to accept the consequences.

Thank you ahead of time for your understanding. This is really embarrassing to admit, but I know when I need help.

PS: Sedentary to light activity, very small frame.

OK, I have walked and sometimes still do walk in your shoes.  I did  have a very active eating disorder for over 12 years, which now is 20 years ago.  However, at times of extreme stess, especially since I stopped using my chemical substances, I have fallen back into small binges and then purging.

I understand you.

I can suggest you do 5 or 6 small meals a day, so you never feel too full. And maybe spike up your activity level a wee bit?

It's a hard place to be  in, I really do get it.  ALSO, don't weight yourself as often.  Maybe once a week at the very most.  Dont' drive yourself crazy-well try not to go too far.  We all know how expensive gas is these days!  HA! LoL!

Keep us filled in on how you're doing, OK?

So hello,

First full day of spring...and thrilled I made it through another winter.  OK, I know living in T.O. there is still at least one more month where we can see snow.

I once bought the shower curtain from a hotel.  It was just something that I wanted and I could afford.  I do believe they'll sell anything-for the right price, of course.

Perseverance, huh?  That's #1 in my life in almost every, if not every aspect of my life these days, too.  And patience, I'm learning to be more patient.  Y'know when you ask your Higher Power for patience, He'll give you lots to endure to learn patience!

Happy Spring!

wow, I just started to read some of the posts I have missed after all these months, and I have to say, I'll never remember everything I have read and that was only a few pages.

I am doing well today-this is a one day at a time disease, so I am vigilant to do the'do' things.

I bought myself a stability ball yesterday and worked with it (or more to the point, against it!).   Wow, w/o going to the gym for a few months my core strength has gone soft.  I've never been good with balance, and now it seems to be worse.  I have every intention to keep at it so I can get that strenght in my core even better than it was before I stopped going to the gym in October.

I'm having some issues around keeping tabs on my calories in vs. calories out on my homepage.  I tend to, since I've had an eating disorder, to get more obsessed than is healthy and definetly not helping my recovery.  I am aware of most of the  caloric content of most foods, give or take.

When I was working out a few years ago, I was NOT counting every calorie, and just making sure I went to the gym on a regular basis and did my cardio and weight-training.

I do believe I need to do that again.  I can't afford to go off the deep end at this point in my life.

Still, I'd love some support from the gals here.
Thanks,

renee

Allergy Remedies
Is It Possible to Go Natural?
The side effects of allergy medications keep some people from using them. Natural remedies can be a great alternative, but some are more effective than others.
