Weight Loss I used to be fat... what do you think Jun 04 2008

God, what a complete tool. Women develop stretch marks a lot of ways, not the least of which are from pregnancy or puberty. Hell, I have had stretch marks on my breasts since I was eleven, because I turned into a C-cup overnight! I have male friends who got stretch marks on their biceps from putting on too much bulk too fast while body building.

It's disgusting to me that fat people are the last remaining group that it's "okay" to make fun of. That same guy would die of shame before calling someone the n-word, but he made disparaging comments about fat people without a second thought.

FAST WAY to lose a few inches of water weight!!!

Know now this is only water weight, and the only reason I'm even telling you about it is so you can fit into your prom dress without killing yourself on a crash diet. There is an old power-lifting trick that some soldiers use to get by a tape test. Before I tell you, you have to promise and absolutely swear that you will QUIT over restricting right this minute. That's just going to kill your energy and make you stay sicker, longer.

What you do is take some cortisone cream/spray (some people think hemmorhoid cream works best, I prefer Cortaid allergen spray) and rub it into your torso/buttocks/wherever is swollen. Then, wrap that area TIGHTLY with saran wrap. If you have to do it so tight that you can't breathe, quit now because saran wrap just can't help you! Leave the saran wrap on overnight, and remove in the morning. Try to go easy on the complex carbs and salt the day of, to prevent retaining all that water right back again.

If that still doesn't work for you, I have one word: spandex. Women all over this fine world have used support garments to provide a sleek sillhouette on special occasions. Slap some spandex on that butt, and dance until you drop!

Oh yeah, look up a shake some time. I knew it was high in sugar, but I thought a little treat wouldn't hurt, and skim milk would help...WRONG!

It always amuses me when people use the internet to talk about the "natural-ness" of things. LOL.

Though I don't disagree that cow's milk is very different from human milk, and that sometimes people struggle to digest it or indulge in too much of it, I draw the line at calling it unsafe. Pasteurization is merely a process that kills any POTENTIAL bacteria in the product. You clean the dirt off your strawberries before you eat them-- does that make them unsafe? Cow's milk was ingested safely by humans LOOOOOONG before Pasteur came on the scene.

Okay, first and foremost, you need to seriously consider in-patient treatment. If your weight and habits are this dangerous to your health, your first step should be to relinquish control of your health to medical professionals. They can monitor your health while helping you address the issues psychologically.

Until then, you need to take in more calories, period. Ensure makes great hi-cal shakes that will supplement what you need and be easier on your teeth than solid food. Unfortunately, such a product does you no good if you're going to get anxious and throw it back up.

Get help from a medical professional, please. If not for your own sake, for the sake of your children.

Weight Loss Pine nuts for snacks...good or bad?? Oct 22 2007

As long as they're within your caloric intake, pine nuts aren't hurting a thing. Sure, they're high in fat, but it's good fats. The fatty acids found in raw nuts will improve your skin, your hair, and are a much-needed nutrient for your muscles.

Yup! That's what happens when you overrestrict. Now just to add insult to injury, consider for a moment what that week of fasting did to your metabolism. If you'd been eating 1800 calories a day and esercising, that hedgehog would be hardly a hiccup. Instead, your body is socking away every single one of those calories and turning it into fat reserve because it thinks it's starving.

Oh Jesus, I just saw that you're 13. DO NOT TRY IT.

When your body is developing, it is relying on all the nutrients it can get to build you into a healthy adult. What teens need to do is get rid of the empty calories (sugary sodas, chips, candy, etc.) and replace those with fruits and vegetables. When I say vegetables, I do not count potatoes. Think green and leafy here, people!

If cutting out sweets and junk isn't enough, increasing your activity level is the key. Think about it...would you rather be hiking, biking, swimming, playing basketball, running, climbing, skating, dancing, doing martial arts -- or would you rather be dieting? 'Cause this Slimfast crap isn't going to give you the energy to do both.

Two words: starvation diet.

While I'm sure there are some people out there somewhere who can benefit from this kind of stuff, I don't know a nutritionist in the world who would sign off on a plan to take in only 1000kcal a day. I've used slimfast as a meal replacer or nutritional supplement in the past for those really busy days, but I've supplemented it in other ways. Meals should be OVER 300 calories each for just about anyone, and I aim for 500cals per meal for myself. I'm a very active person, so 2,000 kcals a day overall intake is an effective weight loss regimen.

I should state here that using them as a nutritional supplement was just a handy way to use up the Slimfast I had left over from when I tried their diet plan myself. You know why it was left over? 'Cause I actually gained weight.  I was taking in only 1100 calories a day and exercising, and my body let out a big F-U!  and proceeded to hoard every single calorie it could get. It took months to straighten my metabolism out again.
Weight Loss How to stop eating Oct 21 2007

Your body has a certain "set point" that it is accustomed to having. It is that point that tells you when you are no longer hungry, when you no longer have to eat. Fortunately, that point is flexible. When in times of plenty, your set point will increase and increase because your body is designed to hoard and reserve energy. When food is less available for whatever reason, that set point will drop.

There are some tricks to fooling it, however. Drinking water or skim milk before meals will give your body the feeling that it is taking in calories and fill your tummy so you can't stuff yourself with more calorically dense foods. You can also fill your plate with fiber and moisture dense foods like vegetables to trick your body into feeling full. My internal "I want" drive may whimper a little at the sight of a half-empty plate, but fill the other half of that sucker up with broccoli, an you've got a win-win situation! Tea is also a big helper. It's no-cal, high in antioxidants, and you can't help but drink it slowly. It's good for the body and the spirit. I use it to help me avoid nighttime eating, which is my biggest problem. *dies of shame*

Good luck!
Weight Loss My Mother, and Cultural Attitudes Toward Weight Loss Oct 21 2007

Well Missreporter, I think what has happened here is simply that you and your mom have had a common miscommunication. It is clear that you are already at a healthy weight, and your mother is right to express concern if you are there and talking about losing weight. She may not have expressed it as gently as she should have, but you are a lucky girl to have a mother who looks out for your health.

That said, you clearly are looking out for your health. The two of you are in definite agreement on that, so you can work from that foundation. Unfortunately in your OP, I hear you describing your plan first in terms of your comfort, your happiness, and your flat stomach. If your mother is anything like mine, she's probably hearing that and picturing anorexic magazine models who are perfectly comfortable at 85 pounds.

Do you think she would have responded differently if you'd described your effort as "toning up" your figure, instead of just losing weight? Of course you're talking about losing fat, but what about gaining muscle tone and fitness? Your mother might respond more positively if she was aware that you were working toward a health goal, not a scale number. Her comfort with your work might increase if you were to explain to her how that healthy weight range is a broad spectrum for everyone. If you were to provide her with information about your bone structure (wrist measurements are great) and how that affects where you should be in that range, she might come closer to understanding that you are working WITH your natural body type to reach an optimal level of health.

It's got less to do with pressuring me and more to do with teasing him. If you have a lot of male friends, surely you are aware that some guys will go out of their way to tease a friend whose wife is unattractive or who is sensitive about his wife's weight.

In all fairness, my husband admits that this is unfair to me and irrational. He also says he loves me and finds me sexy, and that his own insecurity about his weight (a little on the low side) feeds into this as well. He's a wonderful man and I love him very much, but this only adds to the difficulty of the weight loss journey.

To answer yoru question, nursemeow, he is feeling pressure from his co-workers about having a "fat wife." It does make sense if you remember that his coworkers are a bunch of young (and usually single) soldiers.

Got to throw in here:

DO NOT STRETCH BEFORE RUNNING! This is advice straight from my personal trainer's mouth. Never, ever, ever stretch cold muscles. Not only is it wasting your time, but you are also risking injury.

Shin splints have the potential to cause serious injury as well, so treat them carefully. Try to go easy for a few days and wrap them with hot compresses about 20 minutes a day. This will allow the muscles to relax fully and decrease the strain on the bones (thus decreasing the risk of stress fractures). Before bed is the best time to do it.

Once you're feeling good and ready to return to your workout, there are a few simple steps to prevention. First and foremost, look at your shoes. If your shoes are worn or have uneven tread pattern, replace them. Your body will thank you. If you have good shoes, proceed SLOWLY. Give yourself plenty of time to warm up before you begin jogging intervals, and plenty of time to cool down when the workout is done. Lack of cool down and stretching time is probably the biggest cause.

Weight Loss The best healthy changes you've made since starting your weight loss journey? Oct 09 2007

I eat SO much more than I ever used to! I think that's the single biggest change to my diet. I feel like I'm constantly eating in comparison to the "diets" I tried in the past where I was starving all the time. I used to eat BARELY above starvation level, and all it made me was tired and FAT.

Another surprising change is that I've actually increased the fat in my diet. The fats I eat are just from different sources-- raw nuts, fish, flaxseed, avocado, etc. I feel more satisfied in every way with my diet now that I'm eating more fruits, vegetables, and healthy fats.

I love finding a healthy balance in my diet!

I've lost 43 pounds over the last year, and I've had a small plateau after every ten pounds. This is the longest plateau I've ever been stuck at, and it is making me miserable. I'm 24, 5'9", and 250 pounds.

Thanks so much for the tips Tara! I've been stuck for a month now, and I'm losing my mind. I completely forgot about trying interval training-- I'll get right on that!
