Hi Lauren-

I totally get what your saying.  All I ever used to do was think about my next meal. And now....all i ever do is think about my next meal but in a totally different perspective.

To date I have lost 133lbs! I had my good days and my bad weeks and I still do.  Its been an experiment the entire journey and the hardest thing for me to learn was just b/c something is working today doesn't mean it will work tomorrow.

Here is a brief run down of how I started and somethings that worked for me.

When I first started I didn't change a THING about how or what I ate, I just logged it all...wow what an eye opener that was.

i ALWAYS LOG what I eat; even if it never makes it from the piece of paper I jotted it down on into the comp I still can tell u everything i had on my good and HORRIBLE days.

exercise- i started slow just walking on a treadmill at like a speed of 2.5

portions- cutting back portions NEVER worked for me so I would cut back the calorie filled stuff and fill the rest of the plate with no sauced veggies.  Think lean cuisine sized portion of the entree and a 16oz bag of broccoli. It took a LONG time b4 I could cut back the volume

The VALUE of a CALORIE and not just the NUMBER of Calories.  Example bread- i can have 2 slices of light bread for like 50-100 cals; but i would 'need' a snack (usually not a healthy one) soon after. in comparison to 'real' bread where one slice is 80 cals but I would have the same lunch on a differnt bread and not get hungry to my next meal.  What I consider real breads are whole grain, sprouted fresh. the ones like alvarado st bakery or ezikeil 4:9 (they also have awesome pastas, cereals etc...)

Find substitutions. For me milk in my coffee was a KILLER. Couple hunred cals a day. switched to unsweetend almond milk.....coffee still yum at less than half the cals of skim milk.

Try new things.

No one is perfect we will slip and fall, its the getting up that matters no matter how long ur bottom was on the floor ;-)

as far as cravings go. give in to them in moderation or find ways to avoid them. For the most part I avoid them by planning to have to foods I crave 2-3 time a month and just work those cals into my week (yes I said week not day) and some of them I have found substitutions for like chocolate (my biggest weakness) I now have a little cocoa powered (unsweetened) EVERYDAY. I add it to everything from my coffee to my oatmeal (again slow cook whole oats NOT instant or quick.)

cals by the week not the day.  What works for me it to make sure I NEVER go under 1200 cals a day but worry more about the average at the end of the week being with in my daily cal target than each day being perfect.  This also allows me some flexibility when it comes to cravings plan changes etc....

Well I hope some of these help you and the previous poster. I could go on for pages but I will stop here.

Remember weight loss should be done at the speed of the turtle not the hare ;-)

I look forward to hearing more from you.

Pam

Well I will avoid the obvious and suggest 2 things. One still count cals but eat ur burn and don;t stop working out.  For me even when i am on a diet break I am never on a break from eating healthy.

two In answering  ur question on breaking the bindge cycle: start bt replacing some of ur b7ndge food with veggies. especially if its about volume. if its about taste make sure u have some of what u want and then lots of veggies.  while doing that  try to figure out the emotioal element of what is causeing u to want to bindge..

u already took the first step in breaking the cycle by want to and asking for help.

good luck

I'll try to find the link they sent me.  I will post it if I find it.

I know this isn't exactly what ur looking for answer wise but I hope it helps.

Weight Loss Hidden Calories..... Sep 11 2010

jp- good point.  That actually happened to me yesterday I assumed the package of sushi was one serving and then when I was logging it I noticed the package said 2.

Another good one that I figured out awhile ago is if u weigh the contents of the package that says 2.5 servings there is always a little more to A LOT more in that package.  So my baked lays, even though the single serving package says it only has so much when u weigh the chips it really has up to 1.5 servings in it. So I always log it as 1.5 servings if I didn't weigh the chips before i ate them.

The Lounge Tattoo Question... Jun 26 2010

thanks everyone. I really appreciate all the responses, especially from those who scabbed.  I kind of thought the scabbing might effect the color.

I guess because it is on my wrist could explain why this one hurts more.

@kotovo there is no smell or discoloration other then the slight redness around the part with the scab. and its definatly a superficial pain like a rug burn.

@ randomv3 :-) I know tats hurt but this one was different then my last two so I was being uber cautious

@keo it only oozed plasma and both the artist and all the internet research I did after making this post said it could happen

@ everyone who mentioned neosporin. I didn't use it just a&d ointment and now aveno. but there is conflicting advice on it. my artist said I could use it and those who's color was affect seem to be a small  percentage that had a allergic reaction.  (I googled tattoo aftercare and read several different articles.)

thanks again for taking the time to respond.

Foods Raw & Vegan - your thoughts? Jun 17 2010

I eat totally vegan (though since I am still learning I still have a small I didn't know that moments on ingredient label every now and then) and I love it.  I have never felt better! I also try to eat mostly whole unprocessed foods but truth is sometimes convenience foods (ie veggie burgers) gets the best of me....  Eating raw takes a major time commitment and a lot of planning meals ahead.  If your up to the time commitment and limited choices go for it. Do what is best for you.  It doesn't really matter what others think.  I have discovered food/eating style is such a personal choice now a days.....its all about what works for you and allows you to feel good about yourself and ur choices.

Good luck!

Weight Loss How did you decide on your goal weight? Jun 17 2010

my Goal weigh to go to the DR and have my true BMI done is 163.  I choose that weight because it is the top end of healthy weight for my height according to the bmi tool on this site.  I may stop there or keep going it depends what my actual bmi is.  In no way do I think my goal is "model like" I am simply going for healthy.

I was 277 when I graduated high school, I am now 195.  I started this journey at 315.....thats 120lbs gone forever.

I am so sorry for your loss.  Its devastating to lose someone, especially under such tragic circumstances.  My Uncle was killed by a drunk driver when he was 33, my family was never the same after that day.  But its hard and we all deal differently.  My mom and dad have been gone for years and to this day I dream they are here and it was just all some stupid mix up.

Time will make it easier, just keep talking about it when you need to no matter how much time has passed.

It could be many things with out more info its hard to speculate.  how many cals r u eating? how much r u working out? Whats ur burn? how much have u lost in what time frame?

In addition to the reasons mentioned above.  if ur working out you could have gained muscle, Your cal deficit could be to big and you may need to eat more.

My suggestion is if ur doing everything healthy ignore this blip because its bound to happen every once in awhile and in the long run u will succeed.

I am a newish vegan and was having the same protein issue.  I ended up buying a vegan protein shake that I have on days that I am low on protein.  But truthfully that doesn't happen often anymore.  I too am trying to lose weight.  I have lost 60lbs since going vegan (95 since starting) and have another 60 to go.

If it bothers you to eat fish don't.  There are plenty of sources out there, you just have to find what works for you.

Weight Loss I can think myself hungry... Mar 24 2010

I know exactly what your talking about.  And distraction works best but for me not always.  To help I am constantly drinking water.  All my snacks are things that can be sliced or eaten on at a time (nuts for example) and then I eat one piece every few minutes.  A snack could last me an hour or more.  And on my days off when I am not leaving the house I do the same thing with my meals.  One bite at a time, I am basically eating all day.

Those are the things I find work and I rotate them as needed.

Another I do is, for my planed meals, I cook something that is a little more complicated and/or just takes longer to make.  It passes the time and cures any craving I may be having. (this only works if u don't snack and taste while u cook) :-)
