As for the avocado... that is one of few foods that I will ignore the higher calories because they are just toooo delicious!

I did not know that about the refried beans -- thanks!! That's great info for this evening & the future.

I'll be getting a margarita (the caramelized fruit one -- it's Friday, dammit!), so this is really only going to be minor damage control... the differences between the two dishes is probably not very significant but I figured might as well do what I can to not go super overboard. Salads wreak havoc on my digestive system for some reason and I'm not a fish fan so those other options aren't in the running unfortunately.

I've heard that one shouldn't weight train more than 3-4 days a week. Should I follow this guideline and keep calories at a maintenance level every day?

I'm really worried about gaining weight and losing muscle while I can't run... any suggestions on how to avoid this?

That sounds like exactly what I have. 3-6 weeks of rest?! Ugh. What kind of exercises can I do in the meantime?

The article says this: "Many patients are given a knee strengthening program or sent to a physical therapist. The reason for this is not so much to make you stronger (the average patient with chondromalacia is quite strong), but to better balance the muscles around the knee. Without specific exercises to balance these muscles, and a proper stretching routine, the problem of chondromalacia will likely not be solved. Doing the exercises every day is an important part of treatment."

What kinds of specific exercises & proper stretching routines is it talking about?

It's a little difficult to articulate where in my right knee it hurts... definitely inside, mostly underneath on the bottom left side of my kneecap, but also slightly above on the left side of the kneecap as well.

I'm not sure what ITB is... and no, I don't typically stretch much.

This is actually the first time in my life I've run quite this much, even in high school track. I was a mid-distance runner, and even when we went on long distance runs during practice I had terrible endurance and couldn't run much more than a mile without walking. I never considered myself a runner, always hated running just to run. But now I love the treadmill because I can run at my own pace which means I can last much longer, I love the sense of accomplishment when I finish, and I'm discovering leg muscles I completely forgot I had. I wouldn't say I'm pushing myself more now than I did during sports in high school, but I'm definitely doing more pure running instead of a mix of physical activities.

I wear Asics sneakers - not sure if they're specifically for running or walking, I bought them at Marshall's. They're quite comfortable. I don't think I have flat feet or any leg length difference, as far as I can tell.

I have the same exact problem! WHY is it the day after a night of heavy drinking I always seem to be insatiably starving? It always seems like no matter what I eat I can never be full. What's going on there?

I can definitely physically feel the loss of muscle, so it must be that. I guess when I was going to the gym all that time I was gaining muscle while losing fat, which would explain why my weight hovered around the same number? It's just a little surprising (and disappointing) that I could have lost 3 pounds of muscle in just 2 weeks, if not more because I'm sure I gained a little bit of fat, too.

I was working out under the assumption that the more calories I burned, the more weight I could lose. I guess that's pretty naive? I agree that I probably need to do some weight training to work on building muscles, but I have no idea how to even BEGIN to do that. Unfortunately I don't have access to a personal trainer at my school's gym and my friends are also all equally clueless about lifting. Not to mention it's very intimidating to lift among really built guys that look at you strangely if you're a girl struggling to lift anything. :\

So is there some sort of general rule I should go by to figure out how much I've ACTUALLY burnt? Like how much should I subtract from what the machine gives me?

Well, I'm not particularly trying to fry the food, it's just the easiest and fastest way I know of to cook chicken in a frying pan. I eat chicken most nights and I always cook it in a frying pan, and I make stir fries fairly often as well which I also cook in a pan.

Which kind of oil is best to use? I've been using vegetable oil, but is olive oil better? (And is there any calorie difference?)

Thanks everyone for the tips. I'm really just starting to learn the basics of cooking my own food - I'm a college student and I recently moved to my own apartment, and I've realized I can't exactly eat healty by simply toasting, microwaving and boiling.

@umneydurak - I think I may have been overestimating - I cooked some chicken tonight and measured out one teaspoon and it was about what I've been using all along. Still, that's more calories than I'd like to add, even if it's a relatively small amount. As for the chicken stock, can you use that when cooking pretty much anything instead of oil?

@nieto - Thanks for the spray bottle idea, I'm definitely going to try it!
