I will also be taking a long flight with Singapore Airlines in a few weeks so I am interested in hearing how you find your low fat meal.

Enjoy your trip!

Tinned tuna - I can't walk past little tins of tuna when they are reduced price at the supermarket.  I have a drawer at work filled with these little tins.  As I only eat two of these each week, I always seem to have a full drawer of tuna.

My colleagues tease me saying I am stockpiling for the great tuna shortage!

If you enjoyed the meal, another idea would be to ask the cook for the recipe.  This is also a real compliment for the chef!  Although sometimes this can be scary like the time a friend's recipe for a delicious curry included 1.5 cups of peanut oil for 8 servings!

Weight Loss Why are so many people aiming for a very low BMI? Jun 05 2009

Thanks everyone for your thoughts on this.  I apologise if my original post sounded judgemental in any way, I didn't meant it to be, the issue is one that I am genuinely curious about.

I have personally experienced a BMI of 12.5 at the age of 17; and a BMI of 31 at the age of 35 so I have endured the health issues of a high and low BMI.

Today my BMI is finally back in the healthy range (24.8) so I am happy (thrilled) for now and will be happy to maintain my current weight while continuing to work on my fitness.

Foods Wine Jun 03 2009

I understand this dilemma as I too adore a good drop of wine.  I also regularly cook with wine and traditionally sipped a glass or two while cooking before sitting down to dinner and another couple of glasses........

Over the last few months I have learnt to limit my wine intake to a single glass of wine on no more than 3 nights a week (I will allow two glasses tonight as it is my birthday).  I have also decreased the number of dishes I cook with wine to "special" meals.

What I have done to make the decrease in consumption easier, is increased the quality of the wine I drink to the best I can afford so it really is worth enjoying.

Calorie Count Calorie Counting for Marinades??? Jun 02 2009

A nutritionist friend of mine advised me years ago that for a paste type marinade (eg pesto) assume 1 tbsp of the marinade sticks to each 85 grams (3 oz) meat.

For a oil based liquid marinade, assume 0.5 tbsp of the marinade sticks to each 85 grams (3 oz) meat.

For a non-oil liquid based marinade (eg juices or wine etc) assume 1/3 tbsp sticks to each 85 grams (3 oz) of meat.

I hope this helps.

Happy birthday Mlkessler!  I can relate to your need to confess.  I am turning the dreaded 40 tomorrow and have a special dinner planned on Saturday.  I will be having delicious roast chicken (I will remove the skin if I am feeling virtuous) with roast potatoes and steamed vegetables followed by a decadent lemon souffle.

My daughter is making me a birthday cake and as chocolate is her favourite, I suspect that is what I will be getting!

I know I will blow my calories on that day but I will only turn 40 once.

Sadly I think this is too common.  I suffered anorexia as a teen and bulimia in my early twenties.  Although my weight was stable and within the normal range during my mid twenties I kept my unhealthy obsession with food, calories, fat content, carbohydrate content, glycaemic index etc etc.  This eventually led to significant overeating and weight gain as the years progressed.

In my case, I probably didn't fully recover from my early eating disorders.  Once my weight was "normal" treatment was ceased so the disordered thinking could continue unchecked.  I suspect this is the case with many eating disorder sufferers.  Society needs to realise that eating disorders are far bigger than simply an issue of body weight.

I take my lunch and snacks to work from home each day but some days I am a bit more peckish or my home-made lunch doesn't appeal.  I have a drawer full of little tins of tuna for this purpose.

Kittiekee, if you still have the pain, please see your doctor.  As Curlygirl said, the pain could be gallstones.  Back in February I took myself to the doctor after several weeks of intermittent upper abdominal pain after I ate.  Following an ultrasound I was diagnosed with gallbladder disease.

If you do have gallbladder disease, there are various treatments available, especially if the condition is caught early.

Hope you are feeling better soon.

Weight Loss cheese-eeek? May 14 2009

I adore cheese, and pre February 2009 I enjoyed cheese every day (the more exotic, smelly and expensive the better).  Unfortunately my love of cheese (together with dark chocolate and red wine) eventually caught up with me leading to not only obesity but gall bladder disease.

Sadly, I can no longer enjoy cheese or chocolate without significant pain.  The fear of this pain is enough to keep me away from these beloved treats.  I still enjoy visiting my local cheese provedore and simply looking at (and inhaling) the wonderful products (I clearly have a problem!).

As a cheese lover (and victim), I would recommend you limit your cheese consumption to the occasional small portion of the best cheese you can afford.

Good luck!

Weight Loss Desk job and Pilates Ball May 14 2009

Using a pilates ball at work is a great idea but unless you have your own office where you can secretly exercise to your heart's desire I would strongly caution against bouncing up and down.

Several years ago (before pilates balls became popular), one of my well endowed staff replaced her chair with a ball.  After a few weeks, once she became comfortable balancing on the ball, she took to bouncing up and down as she worked.  This became a major distraction for the office and several (male) staff requested I counsel her.  This was very uncomfortable for both of us as she was clearly just trying to improve her health and fitness whereas I was a fat blob doing no exercise at the time.

The staff member agreed to refrain from bouncing on her ball although sadly her seating arrangement was forced to change when a thumb tack found its way under the ball one day (I suspect this was deliberate sabotage).

Have fun with your ball!

Foods burgers without breadcrumbs May 13 2009

I make burgers (rissoles in my family) the way my mother taught me using rolled oats (oatmeal).

The basic ingredients for these burgers is:

500 grams extra lean ground beef
1 onion (finely chopped)
1 grated carrot
1 cup rolled oats (oatmeal)
0.5 cups barbecue sauce
1 egg (lightly beaten)

Mix all ingredients together and make into balls before cooking on the barbecue or in a lightly oiled fry pan.

Foods Stir Fry May 08 2009

I love str fries and with a good non-stick pan over a high heat, they can be cooked with very little (or even no) oil.

My favourite stirfries always contain fresh grated ginger, onion and garlic plus a little sesame oil.  The sesame oil could be excluded if you don't like it or want to minimise fat.

One example stirfry to try if you like beef that will easily serve 6 and is just 242 calories per serve is below.  You could substitute just about any vegetables or lean meat if you prefer:

1 medium onion
1 garlic clove (crushed)
1 tsp grated ginger
350 grams extra lean beef (cut finely across the grain)
1 medium carrot
0.5 red bell pepper
1 cup broccoli
1 cup celery
1 medium zucchini
400 grams noodles (I use hokkein noodles)
1 tbsp soy sauce
0.5 tsp sesame oil
1 tsp olive oil

Slice all vegetables evenly.
Heat olive oil in wok over high heat.
Cook beef until brown, remove from pan.
Cook onions, garlic and ginger for 3 minutes in same pan.
Add remaining vegetables, sesame oil and soy sauce and cook 5 minutes until just soft.
Stir through noodles and beef and heat through.
Serve and enjoy.......

I agree with Angie, try a good quality body shaper or foundation garment.  It is amazing how these garments can smooth out the lumps and bumbs and this may be all that is needed.  If this doesn't work, I would suggest getting the dress altered as unless you have lots of weight to lose, losing 2 inches in two weeks is not likely to be easy or safe.  Remember you want to look radiant in your dress rather than pale and weak.

Weight Loss Yes Coffee or no Coffee??? Apr 24 2009

Don't give up coffee if you enjoy it.  I start every day with a skim milk cappucino and usually have 1 or 2 skim cappucinos each morning and an espresso (short black) or two  each evening.

If it wasn't for my cappucinos I wouldn't get nearly enough calcium in my diet. I would probably also struggle to get out of bed and onto my exercise bike so in my case coffee is definitely a weight loss tool!Laughing

I agree with Stephanie Piro's sentiment "Behind every successful woman is a substantial amount of coffee".

I once went to the doctor for a full health check but she wasn't able to weigh me as her previous patient had jumped on the scale in anger after seeing their weight!  I think I lost a couple of pounds laughing, so I suggest jumping on your errant scales!
