Sometimes if you eat a lot of vegetables, that can happen. I'm not sure what you're eating, but those high insoluble fiber foods (leafy greens, for instance) sometimes don't get totally broken down through digestion. Maybe you should try a serving of probiotic yogurt every day, like activia, to help those good bacteria that break down your food. Activia is good. Try to get some soluble fiber in your diet, like oatmeal, and see if that changes things. Just read your labels to find out the fiber levels and what type of fiber are in foods.

I have something similar to what you describe. Common name is "runner's knee"---you can look it up and see if you have more symptoms of it (you don't have to be runner to have this problem). But basically the kneecap isn't tracking properly and can cause pain, especially after a time of increased exercise. Ibuprofen will help with the inflammation, but glucosamin-chondroitin will help with the joints. Icing and this ointment called Tiger Balm has helped soothe the joints. Also taking a good amount of time to stretch after the workout. Maybe you should consider knee braces...simple Ace brand that look like a band with a hole for your kneecap...to stabilize your knee.

I focus on how think I will look at my goal weight. Lately I think of myself lying on the beach an a black 2-piece and saying "why, yes I have a 6-pack." That's what I think about when doing abs, especially :)

I was just diagnosed with chondromalacia a week ago! I'm 5'3", 180 lbs, and just turned 25 a few days ago.  Hiking while doing biological research in the Appalachian mountains triggered the pain, which started over the summer. I was doing P90X also, and while on winter break I started training a little harder while I had the time. I had pain that runs down the central plane of my patella (kneecap), and I also have pain to the inner side of my kneecap. I have no cartilage damage according to x-rays. Chondromalacia is really common in young adults who have over-trained their leg muscles...they've worked them too hard, too quickly and it causes the patella to track incorrectly between the femur and tibia. My symptoms were not only pain, but a crunchy, grindy sound when I would squat or lunge. I am now taking an anti-inflammatory, glucosamine-chondroitin complex, doing rehabilitation exercises, and wearing knee bracing on each leg to realign and support my patella. I think part of my problem also is that I sit a lot while I study, which affects my hip joints. My goal is to build my thigh muscles to help support my patella. I can't lose weight if it hurts to exercise, and if I don't reduce the weight I bear on my legs, I'll keep having pain! Quite a conundrum. Hope this helps!

I would love to lose something by Halloween! I'll just set a goal that from the 19th of August to the 31st of October to lose 20 lbs.

I want to go as Tim Burton's Corpse Bride! I want to be a sleek dead bride! lol I feel I'll have an easier time finding an old bridal gown to rip the hell out of if I'm a smaller size, because used dresses are typically too small for me :(

I always wanted to go as a playboy bunny too...the costumes are typically expensive and it's fun to make your own instead of buying one :)

sounds like your eating enough for your activity level and for weight loss. but i would suggest even though this maybe off topic to just cut out the soya unless you take in some sort of kelp supplement or you eat 1-2 serving of fish everyday.because soya suppress the thyroid functioning. i would also suggest maybe even though your mixing it up your body is use to the calorie yo-yoing. why not change it up and have a consistent number for one week then change it the next- it takes seven days for the body to release that theres a change, then change the cals again before it catches up.

just a suggestion

That's a cool fact about the soy I never knew about!

You sound a lot like me--nearly the same age, weight, and daily cal stats. I went vegetarian for about 9 months and didn't lose anything despite exercise. I won't act all innocent because there were instances of eating more than I ought to or skipping some workouts...no one's perfect. But no weight loss after 9 months! Anyway, I slowly started incorporating meat back into my diet in May and felt less tired---vegetarianism made me exhausted! This past week I started South Beach and I have noticed more change in my body in this week than in those 9 months! I'm not saying you have to eat meat because I know for some reason it's more than just a choice to not eat it---for some there are deep-felt ethical reasons---what I'm saying is perhaps look at your food percentages and try to up the protein if it's super low.

One other reason I decided to add protein back was the Oxidizer Quiz that you can find online or find in Jillian Michael's Making the Cut book. For me to lose weight, I have to have protein. See quiz below:

http://www.gaiahealthcare.com/documents/Metab olicTypeQuiz_000.pdf

Even if the quiz isn't too scientific, it's good to think about the questions it asks. Sometimes it's hard to recognize what our bodies need until we ask ourselves!

Maybe they mean cardio alone can't help you lose weight because it's important to strength train as well.

I was on Seasonique and within a month I reached my highest weight ever. My co-worker even noticed and encouraged me to get back on track. It sucked, even when I did everything perfectly (according to CC) I couldn't lose the weight. The good news was I only got a period every 2 or 3 months so I didn't have to deal with cramps (Main reason I went on the pill.) But the bad news (besides the weight problems) was I got random depressing thoughts.

I've been off the pill for 3 and a half months and attempted to follow the same thing before and surprise: I'm at my lowest weight ever!

It should be noted that everyone reacts to pills differently. I was just unlucky and Seasonique wasn't for me. I haven't tried other pills and don't plan to at the moment.

Seasonique causes the body to act in a way that is sort of different than normal. 4 periods a year might be quite a change for some women's bodies. Perhaps that could have encouraged the weight gain? If you are worried, talk to your doctor about ultra low-dose pills like yaz. I took the "mini pill" which is just progesterone and I gained weight, now that I think of it...then I switched and feel fine now.

I've been taking yaz since Mar. 2008, and haven't noticed a difference in my weight...though I have been trying to lose weight that whole time. The only reason I haven't lost weight is my fault, not the pills. It seems several of my friends gained weight, but their start of the pill was also in conjunction with being able to drink alcohol legally...so in that case it was the booze, not the pill.

Actually, my period symptoms have decreased so much with the pill! Less bloat, irritability, breakouts, cramps...I can actually have a period without taking tons of ibuprophen to get through it! My urges to binge from hormones has also decreased. I still do binge, hence the no weight loss in the last year. I'm working on that one, though!

Health & Support ~~Bingers Anonymous~~ Aug 10 2009

Hi, my name is Cassie and I'm a binger. I didn't realize I was a binger until recently. I thought what I was doing was just having a "cheat" day, but I realized that it was different. I was eating in hiding away from my room mates, and then when I was done I would throw away the empty packages as soon as possible to get rid of the "evidence." Also, I have been trying to lose weight since 2006, but I can't really get anywhere because all the work I do during the week is offset by the binging I do at least once a week. Most of the times I eat so fast I can't comprehend the quantities. I see a whole empty chip bag and an empty container of dip, as well as feel like I am going to puke, but I'm in denial so I say it's maybe a few hundred calories. I'm ready to change!

One thing I have noticed is that if I eat directly from the container the food comes in, it turns into a binge. From now on, no matter how much I don't want to do extra dishes, I'm going to arrange my servings on a plate and walk away from the main container.

Also, eating low-calorie foods like sugar-free gelatin and pickles seems to be enough to get me over the edge. Also, crystal light drinks help a lot too.

I hope my few tips help and I can't wait to hear more of people's successes!

I'd like to start working out in the morning instead of in the evening. If you do P90X in the morning, you eat before you do your exercises, or do you do it on an empty stomach? What do you eat?

I  have read so many posts and it sounds like nobody likes yoga?  Is it really that bad?  Also, I am supposed to get the whole system on Monday.  The pull-up bar won't be here until Thursday.  Can I start the program without it?

You can use the exercise band attached to the door.

I am one of the yoga haters. I don't know why I don't like it---I have been doing yoga for years. It just seems really repetitive for the first 45 minutes. After the vinyasas in the first 45 minutes, things get ok. It is a good workout and you will sweat, but clearing your mind when you are bored is a real challenge.

Maybe you should identify what is depressing you, and when you reach for eggrolls and chocolate, try to choose instead something that makes you happy. Maybe even journal on here when you feel those cravings come around. Also, try and make your own healthy versions of the foods you crave and eat them in moderation. Perhaps instead of seeing your friends less and less when you are feeling negative about yourself, confide in them about how you are feeling. That way, you are being social and helping yourself not eat out of sadness.

Coolyoga x is tough, no question, but so is kenpo, and I LOVE it... no, the thing about the yoga (and I have done a ton of it) is that (for me) its just less varied than the other workouts .. no question that YOU NEED TO DO IT if you are fully doing the program... I have seen, in the 3 weeks I have done it, that the yoga IS what keeps the muscles from cramping from the resisitance training and other hardy workouts... without the yoga, (as my experience only) I would be, typically, crying in pain on the day after ANY of these workouts... in fact, that is what I find SO amazing about this program... I have not experienced what I would call pain in the three weeks... sore from newly using muscles, sure, but no inflammation from overuse or from being cold when doing the workouts... this program is really quite careful with the body... and no pulls... I really am surprised.. I can get fully into the workouts without worrying, because there is warmup and a great sensibility about what the P90xer did the day before... it all works synergystically... excellent..

BY THE WAY... I have lost 4 and a half inches total in those weeks... AMAZING...

sounds like I should just suck it up and not be a baby, lol :p

I love YogaX.  Only the first half is difficult and I feel like it increases my flexability and core strength.  Its strange, it seems many people either love it or hate it.  I get a really good sweat going during it.

Do you not like it because you find it difficult to do?

I've been practicing yoga for a long time. I don't feel like it's that difficult. I find it boring and repetitive. A lot of times if I don't like an exercise, it's because I'm not mentally engaged. I find myself thinking of all the things I'd like to do afterwards and then my form slips. Everytime Tony says "float the right foot up" or "float the left foot up" I just roll my eyes because it's so repetitive. I wish I could just like it!

How many people out there don't enjoy yoga X? I dread it more than any other workout. Have any of you tried substituting for it? I thought about doing Cardio X or some other yoga program on occasion because I don't enjoy it at all. Any thoughts on the substitution? Thanks!

Hello all!!

Into week #9 now!  Can't believe I'm in Phase 3 and I've come this far with minimal skips in my workout!  I've been working out for years, but I don't think I've ever been this consistent!

I have also not lost weight, but my body fat has dropped.  I also noticed how many "REAL" pushups I could do yesterday in Chest and Back compared to the first day....went from 3 or 4 to 15 or so...not bad!

Did you take measurements of your body from start to now? My measurements are much more dramatic than my weight loss. I was just wondering at your stage in the program how many inches you might have lost.

Coolhey everybody!  so glad I have found you all.. plankcm..I am in week 3 of P90x now, so we are close in our march through this P90x journey.... I had to restart two weeks in, as I got pneumonia.. (4 weeks of misery, but I still managed to put a workout (albeit modified) in my day 3-4 out of seven.. I am proud of that...).. so, now, this week feels SOOOO good compared to what I felt like in the previous two... today I did plyo..heck of thing, eh?

as for those wondering about how closely to follow: well, my experience is that you can use what you have learned in the previous workouts to modify the exercises you may not be able to do entirely.. for example.. today, I just couldn't do the plyo move that has you hopping from one side (both legs)and turning 180 to the other side... so, I utilized those newly awakened stomach, ab, muscles (a LOT of them there) that I have been working out in the resistance routines...to my own modified twisting of the body move.. kind of salsa like, actually, and worked the heck out of the stomach and lateral muscles.. I always modify.. but make sure that I  KEEP MOVING no matter what...

I am so impressed by your weight loss and inches... I am trying to build up the courage to take my measurements... I KNOW I have developed muscle, I can see it, but since MAR 24, even on a rigid calorie diet and exercise program... NO WEIGHT LOSS... I WILL NOT GIVE UP BEFORE THE MIRACLE!!!!

Great to find other P90xers... so convenient, don't have to go to the gym!

That's a bummer about the pneumonia. Glad you stuck with it after that! Plyo is maddness. I switched to Cardio X in week 3 because my knees hurt so much. I hope to be able to do plyo all the way soon. Not only to I want to strengthen my leg muscles, but also my connective tissues of my knees, which I think have deteriorated sightly with all my desk sitting! Boo to desk sitting!

Oh my roommate is just awful. She leaves for work about the time I get up, so is as quiet as a mouse when she's getting ready. She makes me coffee, pays bills on time, washes her dishes, takes out the garbage and recycling before I even get home from work. Mows the yard and plants pretty flowers. She also works at a place the books venues, so I get excellent seating at concerts for a fraction of the price. LAME! So, to get her back...

I walk her dog, clean the kitchen before work, am the primary weed puller/leaf raker and porch sweeper, bring the empty trash and recycling bins back up to the house, pay extra on the cable bill since she buys all the coffee and paper towels, and never leave any of my things laying around the house.

Both of us are equally terrible because we immediately remove all our contents from the washer and dryer and empty the dishwasher as soon as we realize there are clean dishes in it.

We each buy our food seperately and do not eat each others unless offered, and we buy other household items (like dish soap) when we notice we're running low and happen to make a trip to the store before the other. No turn taking. Seriously, she must have bought the TP 3x in a row! And I'm definitely up a few purchases in detergent.

Symbiosis in the house.

Jeesh, and you guys thought you had it bad. ; )

Added: I earned this perfect roommate after years of experience with roommate horrors. Wanted to add this because my post was a brag *sheepish shrug*, but defnitely feel your pain.

You lucky thing...that's probably the difference between mature adults and young college kids.
