"This won't hurt, because there's pus between the nail and the nail bed, which should be dead anyway." --Doctor, about to burn a hole through my nail. Never mind that liquids (pus) are great at heat convection... I screamed and could not physically constrain myself to the chair. What were his next words? "Well, it's probably just anticipatory pain. Don't look this time." I don't trust doctors' common sense over my own anymore. |

Google writing prompts. Actually, you could just join www.nanowrimo.org and I'm sure you'll find lists of ideas, etc. Dares are awesome. |

I think you know what you need to do--EAT. MORE. You're not losing weight because your body is starving and trying to hold onto everything it can so that you don't DIE. |

Also be aware that she may be envious and comparing herself to you, and has given up and gone the opposite way of eating whatever. If she feels she has to compete with you that could be nasty. |

I wouldn't glue anything onto the back of whatever is in front of you and then try to sneak a peek every once in a while--everyone can tell you have it glued there, and it's really awkward if the lighting in your room means you can't read it well, you have to stoop to read it, etc. |

Hmm, are your standards your teacher's standards? I suggest building to meet your teacher's standards, even if it doesn't meet yours, finish the rest of your homework, then if you have time to come back and fix it up to your standards. That is, if it's even possible with models--I wouldn't know, I haven't built any. That's just how I do my assignments. Food--can't help you much there. :( I eat lots of cereal. Glad to hear you're getting to church on the weekends, because I was just about to suggest that. The church I joined has a huge outreach to college students, so I made a lot of friends with students my age who I see on a regular basis (two of whom are in my major and specialization!) and they hold events frequently (two or three times a week, besides Sunday service) so I have really gotten to know and love the people there. I hope you have a similar experience, because I don't know how I would have made it through my first semester without them. :) They have really challenged me to live out Jesus' love to everyone, and that has been a huge impact on me. I don't want to sound like I'm accusing you of being selfish and self-centered all of the time, but the more I tried to focus on and help others out instead of putting my life as the highest priority the more I enjoyed life...I didn't dwell on every bad thing that happened to me every day, you know? Not as much, anyway. Granted, this would be hard if you don't really have anyone you're close to, but it might help. |

Public university in the States, majoring in Mathematics. I've done two years of almost pure lib eds (as a PSEO student, thankfully--didn't have to pay for a lot of the worthless classes) and still haven't finished them all, and it ends up I'm probably not going to graduate for another four (even though I'm taking 16-18 credits a semester). I had to take a class called "interpersonal communication," where we learned the correct way to talk to people. This semester I'm taking some biogeography class where we learn grade school science all over again (know why it's hotter at the equator? I'll give you a hint, it has to do with the shape of the earth! Not kidding, we spent two weeks on that, precipitation, and seasons.). Somewhere along the line I will have to take a class on a tribe of Native Americans (I've been avoiding that one forever)...meanwhile I'm despairing because I'll have to choose soon between taking the road of purer mathematics and the one for more applied math... |

Not to mention maneuverability. When I played soccer I always got shown up by the little girls who could change direction on a dime. Good luck, sounds like fun! :) |

I'm in college and I hate lib ed reqs too! I agree that they seem totally pointless. However, if you do well in them, they will boost your GPA, so I'd try to look at it from that perspective... Some of the most valuable stuff I've learned in the past few semesters is mostly about how to be an adult. What it's like to plan out my time and decide what my schedule will be, how to jump through administrative hoops, how to communicate with different people, how important adequate sleep really is, how to get myself up in the morning...this morning I learned that I can't just get up one day and walk 8 miles (to the store and back)--well, I can, but it's not good on my legs, so it's not something I'm going to do again...unless I really have to...(I was scared I was going to run out of deodorant) If you've messed up three classes, it's probably not because you're "too dumb." Usually my friends and I struggle because of poor time management. You might want to sit down and consider these questions: How many credits are you taking? Do you work on top of that? (>18 credits without a job is HARD. Doable, for a few people, but not something I ever see myself doing.) How many hours do you spend on homework? Do you get all the homework done? Do you go to office hours if you have questions? Do you have friends in your classes? Do you forget about assignments? Do you get enough sleep? Do you (I hope I don't even need to ask this) skip classes? Do you do extra work if you don't have a good grasp of something? How long before a test do you start studying? |

We're creatures of habit, and I'm guessing you've been eating this way for years. If you try to change it all overnight, you're pretty much destined to fail. I second what whichwayup said: make small goals to keep. Like, maybe start with "I'm going to have some water with every meal" or "with lunch and dinner. |

To repeat what others have said: the reason you can't keep fluids down is because you're SO DEHYDRATED, and you're past the point where drinking more fluids is an option for hydration. GET TO THE ER BEFORE SOMEONE HAS TO CALL AN AMBULANCE FOR YOU. |

Use this calculator to find out what you're burning. http://www.health-calc.com/diet/energy-expend iture-advanced I hear a good deficit is somewhere between 250-750 calories per day depending on how close you are to your target. I don't think you're eating enough, which means your body is trying to hold on to every single calorie you eat because it thinks you're starving. I'm also 5'5.5'', somewhere between 150-155 (don't have a scale handy), and I'm averaging ~1800 every day, but all I do is walk about an hour to and from class on weekdays. |

I'm no expert but seeing as no one has answered this post yet, I'll tell you what I think you'd hear from the more knowledgeable and experienced people here: average how much exercise you get per day (so if you do 1 hour of the Jillian Michaels thing 4 days out of 7 days, plug in 1*4/7 hours) and then plug everything into http://www.health-calc.com/diet/energy-expend iture-advanced this calculator. Then subtract 750-1000 calories from that and you have how much you should eat on average. If you want to eat more on the days you exercise and less on the days you don't (or vice versa), it won't make much difference as long as it averages out. |

I woke up to what sounded like a train at my dorm window. I bolted awake. It was SO loud in my little room. I'm still not sure exactly what it is or where it comes from, but I'm pretty sure it's the window or the window frame or something vibrating when it gets windy. You can hear it all the way from the bathroom down the hall. Man, but that first time it SCARED me. I just had no idea what it was. I thought maybe there WAS a train outside my window, but that didn't make any sense, because there are no train tracks outside my window, just a river... I didn't get any sleep that night. :( |

Unfortunately, no one wants to be the person/friend who does nothing while someone else starves themselves to death...but gossip is NOT the way to solve that. I agree with abi333, just say you are recovering from an illness and are gaining weight. Even if they don't believe you at first, they won't have much choice when they see you go back to a healthy weight. |

LOL I used to trust doctors. Then I got an infection under my fingernail (nasty habit of biting them--don't do it!). The doctor said he'd burn a hole through my fingernail to let the pus out, and that it wouldn't hurt at all because there was pus between the nail and the nail bed. And I thought, he's a doctor, he must know what he's talking about, even though I have taken enough physics to know that heat travels well through liquids... Most excruciatingly painful thing I have EVER felt in my life. I scream and jump up, and he tells me I'm only experiencing "anticipatory pain." In other words, I'm making it up. So he makes me look away while he does it AGAIN... He sent me home with painkillers. He didn't even make a dent in my nail. What a waste of money. Not to hijack the thread though, these are funny. :) |

The side effects of allergy medications keep some people from using them. Natural remedies can be a great alternative, but some are more effective than others.
