| Weight Loss | I know what they say but... | Mar 11 2009 18:48 (UTC) |

Sometimes I find that it helps to do meal-sizes instead of snack-sizes. So I'll have breakfast, then lunch #1 at 11 and lunch #2 at 2 or 3 instead of lunch and two snacks. I think you should eat when you're hungry. For me, staving off hunger on a schedule leads to food fixation, so if I have one snack and it's not enough, I'll have the other at the same time and things will be fine. You may also want to try having a more protein-filled snack or lunch. |

| Weight Loss | Fallen Off the Wagon Due to Stress | Mar 10 2009 21:58 (UTC) |

I think it might help to find out the cause of your abandonment of your plans. Stress at work doesn't always automatically translate to eating more. Did you give up on everything, or just your diet plans? If you felt a sense of hopelessness from the one stressful event that pervaded through to the rest of your life, maybe it would help to focus on something you know you're good at, to boost your sense of accomplishment. |

I don't think there's any need to judge "some posters." She posted a topic, and gi-jane tried to help. While I also disagreed that 110-115 was underweight for 5'3", 121 for 5'8" IS underweight and MAY cause health problems, even if it is "only a couple pounds." The point that gi-jane seemd to be trying to make and which I agree with is that at 18, even if you feel like your body isn't growing, it still is. At that age, it's more important to nourish yourself than to lose a couple vanity pounds. If you don't see a difference between 138 and 129, how do you expect to see a difference from 129 to 125? I tend to think you may have a skewed body image mentality as well. |

| Weight Loss | Nervous about joining a gym.. | Mar 09 2009 22:37 (UTC) |

Nobody's going to be mean to you. People go to gyms to work out, not to people watch. And since you already know how to work gym equipment, there's no reason to feel self-conscious at all. You should go visit the gyms in your area before committing to one. Personally, I find gyms with younger people more inviting. And I prefer the big name "chain" gyms over the private ones, especially for socializing. |

Add less water. You can't really make them not be mushy though, unless you make granola out of them instead. |

Your average seems to be about 1700, and it looks like it's working for you. I would stick with the 1500-1900 calorie range. |

If you don't want to go off a computer-generated number, then experiment around for yourself. The calculators give you a starting point, not a biblical number. They calculate based on averages, so if you feel you don't fit, then either get your BMR professionally tested or tweak the numbers until you find something that works. If you're sure you're eating 1500-1600 and not losing weight, then drop it by 100 and see if it works. If it doesn't, then go the other way and add a hundred to the original number. If that doesn't work, then try cycling your calories. Just play with the numbers until you find something that is both healthy and works for you. |

Substituting eating for smoking is a great way to quit, and well worth it. I was going to suggest you try something less caloric like gum or mints too, but it looks like you know what you're doing. Good luck! |

Weigh it, then weigh what's left after you've finished eating it, subtract the difference from the original weight. |

Try something spicy, it gives you flavor without many calories, and it's pretty hard to overeat on really spicy things. I usually snack on banana peppers when I want to eat but am not hungry, but that's because I'm a wuss. You could try jalapenos, or those peppers they have at The Hat are killers (to me, the wuss). A little hot salsa on some vegetables, steamed or fresh, is great too. |

Original Post by madamq: The 1227 is your BMR. The options default to giving you the most weight loss you can without going under your BMR. You can just use the burn rate and subtract however many you want from that instead. |

| Weight Loss | Will I ever be able to eat normally? | Mar 06 2009 20:53 (UTC) |

Yes you will, it's a matter of breaking a habit. As long as you're getting the signs from your body when you're full and when you're actually hungry, and if you continue mostly eating well, eating a maintenance amount should eventually come naturally. At that point, if you start to mentally force yourself to not estimate the calories, you'll be able to break the habit. Because estimating is usually a two step process, isn't it? First you think "I wonder how many calories this thing has" and then you go to "I estimate it to be ____." So instead of actually doing the calculation, you just stop at "I wonder..." ;) |

| Weight Loss | Alternate Day Diet? Is it that crazy? | Mar 06 2009 20:34 (UTC) |

Original Post by jay_breaze: To be honest, I suggested two days/one day alternating because every other day is reminiscent (to me) of some substance abuse patterns. If you're maintaining two days at 2000, then going to 500 for the one day, your deficit is 500 for each day, a perfect amount. BTW how's this working out for your weight loss? |

| Weight Loss | Only eaten 900 cals - any yummy suggestions? | Mar 06 2009 20:18 (UTC) |

Sorry if we're having a misunderstanding. I just don't think that there's anything wrong with 1200 calories per day for someone of that height. The problem (IMO) is when people aim for 1200 calories a day, but don't eat the extra 100 when they're only at 1100. Personally, I lost weight on 1200-1250 calories, and when I went to maintenance, I didn't gain a single pound back. So it seems that 1200 does work fine for some. |

Yeah the starvation mode thing is tired. At 5'1, she is not in starvation mode at 1200 calories. I have a good friend with a degree in nutrition as well, and 1200 is not a red flag number to her. |

I use the weight that other people would see if I weighed myself in front of them. More specifically, if I were to go to a carnival and have my weight guessed, I would want to know what it's going to be before I step on that scale. So I weigh fully clothed and at night. Basically, I go by the highest weight I get to in a day. If I'm feeling flabby, I do usually comfort myself by taking a pound or two off for clothes or food. |
