andrea - that is encouraging... i have a podiatrist appt, and after that i will do what you do

shmodzilla - i stretch, and walk 5 minutes before running

kari - we break wednesday and saturday at least - it improved your mileage! that's great to know - are you on a schedule or you just rest when you feel burnout?

ldydovec - i will look for those - i have one with a pocket for ice but don't use it when i run, just for icing.

lightsyouonfire - i will try that! it's the first time anyone advised me of any exercise for that muscle! A lot of good advice, there, thx.

tianne - i totally agree! i'm still mad at the c25k program that i was trying to follow for suggesting it, and went back to 8 minutes, then 9, then 10.

--------------------------------------------

Thanks so much for such wonderful advice!

I have an appt with a podiatrist to get custom orthotics next week.  I plan to do some of those shin exercises and get back into running with walk breaks (I've been walking with run breaks!).  The shin wraps/tape sounds like a great idea.

I just want to thank everyone again!

I didn't start hard at all!

Just because it didn't feel hard mentally doesn't mean your body was okay with it - clearly, it wasnt! As I was doing my running program I HAD to ease into it slowly for the sake of my body, even though mentally I was really excited and just wanted to run all the time!

Also, you will need time to get used to your orthotics. I recently got some and experienced a lot of feeling quite footsore, plus I had to wear them in gradually, one hour one day, two hours the next, etc.

Take your time. You sound so excited, which is great. And as you progress, that mental ability to push past your physical limits may turn you into a really excellent competitive runner. But in the meantime, you might just hurt yourself quite significantly. And let me tell you, you'll be running nowhere when a torn leg muscle.

As for the walk breaks, I do think that's boloney, just like your sports doctor said. Best of luck

It's not too much too fast, trust me.  I started out with 1 minute runs, 2 minute walks, I had no pain until the stupid program bumped me at week 5 from 8 minute runs up to a 20 minute run - THAT was too fast, so we went back to 8 minute runs.  I had previously had no pain from that.  I believe it's really the instep that's hurting my legs.  Funny also that I have success w/ weight loss with running, so you wouldn't believe how I'm not actually usually excited to do the running, just to be done with it!  Heh!  Unfortunate, I know, but I'm frustrated simply b/c I'm sure I'm NOT going to soon, I mean, we started the whole thing before the winter!  Maybe 8 months ago, for a program that officially takes 8 weeks.  We ran on snowy days after the plows went through.  We've been working it for months, I thought I would be used to it by now if getting used to it was the issue.  Thanks for all your advice though, Katie - I will def keep it in mind - especially getting used to orthotics.

cnichols - thanks to you too - but both the running store people (the original sales person & the one who watched me run when I went back to see if the shoe wasn't good enough) and the doctor today told me I had a good shoe.  I know I overpronate.

I didn't start hard at all!

I just got back from the sports med guy.  He said I have something called... uh, ok, I have no clue what it's called, but I have nice arches when my foot is up but it goes flat when I run, which puts pressure on the shin area & causes shin splints, even with the shoes I have.  He recommended custom made orthotics (bleh) and told me that what the running shoe guy said about never running without walk breaks is bologna (only he was less polite with his wording).

I will work on form anyway, try to get those orthotics, and hope that as the weight comes off (hopefully!) the pressure on my legs will be less & I will continue to be able to run.  For now, there's always Aleve!

Thanks so much for all your input!

Thanks everyone!  Sehnaz, yes, I am finding that along with running comes the necessity for all other kinds of exercises.  Core strengthening, for example, and calf strengthening, but I don't see a marked difference in that for my shins.  I may not be doing it enough.  And I ice every day for like 15 minutes after I run, sometimes later in the day too.

I always stretch before and after... and sometimes during!  I feel like I'm doing mostly the right things, so I'm frustrated.  Especially since no other cardio feels fun anymore!  Maybe I should get a bike.

Ron, I'm on my way to a doc today.  I feel stupid being 40 lbs overweight & going to a sports med doc for running less than 2 miles a few times a week, but there it is.

Katie, I actually dropped back to 8 minute runs after that first stupid 20 minute stretch, and stayed at 8 with 5 min walk breaks for weeks.  Then we built up to 9, then 10, and stopped there.  The running shoe guy said I should NEVER run more than 4 or 5 minutes, tops 8, without a walk break.  That just doesn't sound right, does it?  That's my real question.

I'm definitely overweight, but not obese.  I've been walking a few times a week for years (on again, off again) and sometimes doing an exercise class once a week.  I started running somewhere high in the 160s (I'm in the 170s now, not from lack of exercise but binge eating at night, but I'm on my way down again).  So I haven't been sedentary, exactly.

I got through 5 weeks of the c to 5k, even repeating some weeks when we felt we had to, and first suffered shin splints after the last day of week 5, when the program jumped me up from 8 minute intervals to one 20 minute run.  (coolrunning.com)

My question is about my goal.  If the shin splints make it hard for me to walk, even, how can I prevent them?  And should my goal be to get through a 5k with only running, or is the guy in the shoe store right about taking walk breaks every few minutes forever?  That's what I'm trying to confirm, or not confirm.

Thank you!  I'll keep it like this for now then, since I feel much better this way so far, and my actual goal really is fitness & weight loss.  Do you know where I can look to find out what good form would be?  Isn't it hard to focus on form when running?  (I think form will be easier when I drop some more weight, but for now...)

I have a friend I went running with.  She runs the whole time, and I alternate between running & walking.  She didn't want to go ahead, so when I walked, she ran back and forth in front of me so she wouldn't get ahead & we could still chat & keep each other company.  It was not insulting at all!  We actually laughed about it.  It worked for us both.

Good luck!

I would play it safe & actually ask if you're allowed to keep retainers in.  Maybe it would work, but at least you won't ever have to worry about it.

Thanks so much for your replies!  I didn't know what to search for so thank especially to coach_k for that.  I searched for "specialty running stores in rockland county" (which is where I live so I don't relish the thought of driving into Manhattan!), and I found one with great reviews 17 minutes away.

Cherimoose, how long do I need to rest it for, do you know?  Until it doesn't hurt at all??  B/c I was really easing into the whole thing with the Couch to 5k program, and I had some soreness that I took for "charlie horse" before, but this one 20 minute run is going to drag me backwards!!!  I am about 5'4 1/2, 35 year old female, & I regret to say that as of this morning I weigh 171.5.  Bleh.  Oh, also, the pain is on the inner side of the shin, only on my left leg.

Love the talk show visual!

Yes, it does sound more like swelling from water retention than fat, for sure.  Maybe hot weather related?  I wouldn't worry but I would definitely second the suggestion to see the doc and ALSO to actually do what he/she says!

To answer the question, once a day weigh in, and never after I've eaten!

Just kidding.  I've never figured out why it's so bad to be called a secretary.  The traditional definition of the word is very fitting for what we do.  And my motto in life is: If it was good enough for Donald Rumsfeld, it's good enough for me.

*wishes all secretarial jobs came with the ability to bomb enemies*

No issue with being called a secretary. It's being called someone's 'girl' in an official capacity that rankles.

I've recently been thinking about the term, "girl."  It's male counterpart is "guy" which somehow doesn't have near the connotations of immaturity that the term "girl" does.  I think we've overthought that one into being offensive.  But yes, I would rankle at being called "girl" by an employer or supervisor.

The male counterpart for "girl" is "boy".

So I've got this funny little mole...

 LOL

And me?  I have Daddy issues maybe you can help me with....

Just wait for me to say the words "Would you like to leave a voicemail?"  That's apparently your cue to start crying, cussing, or mumbling incoherantly about all the problems going on in your life.

Got it.

Hey, pav, I just "met" you & you're already so full of wonderful advice.

I get those all the time pav.  Working for a lawyer group apparently makes me everyone's legal advisor...  Which is hilarious because I'm in the treasury dept.

do what I tell my girls here in the office to do...flatly tell the callers that they are not attorney's and, as such, can't give out any legal advise

*Decides that he just simply does not know how to whine*

Whining feel so weird.

Even doing the Hulk's whine feels weird.

For most men, I recommend the puppydog eyes instead.  More effective.

 1. What on earth is the Hulk's whine?

2. I'm pretty sure men are supposed to brood quietly while verbally pretending nothing is wrong.  That's instead of whining.  Isn't that right??  ;)
