this is my problem, i can be good all day long, eat healthy and moderately, but around nine p.m. i go nuts. i had this under control for a while but i somehow fell off, and i find myself eating as many calories after nine as i ate the whole day, and it isn't healthy food either, it's total junk. i need to get it back under control! i thought not having junk in the house would curb it but i'll start craving so bad i'll actually walk to the store and buy tons of crap just to splurge my urge. |

my almond milk graded is A by CC, has more calcium than cow's milk, and i'm not drinking the lactation of a non-human species. yes, don't be afraid of fats, but also be aware of where they come from. you want monounsaturated fats. i'm a vegetarian and i do eat eggs because they're like little protein bombs and seriously one hard boiled egg can keep me full for hours, but even as a child, before i became vegetarian, the idea of drinking something that came out of an animal's tit made my stomach clamp down on itself. to each their own, but i, personally, cannot handle animal milk. that being said, the only cow milk i was ever able to handle was skim. i got plenty of healthy fats from non-animal sources, i didn't need them weighing down my milk. |

exactly so. if it tastes bitter or leaves that weird rough feeling on the roof of your mouth it wasn't treated properly before cooking. cube it or slice it and soak it in salted water for at least thirty minutes, i normally go at least an hour, then rinse it super well and cook however you were going to cook it. i eat loads of eggplant, especially when it's so cheap, as it is in my area right now. it's super versatile and pretty much tastes like whatever you cook it with. i definitely recommend baba ghanouj. the recipe i use came from pakistan and there are tons of variations out there, so it's easy to fiddle around with and get it just how you like it.

a lot of meals don't list potassium on their nutrition info even when it's in there. you may be getting more than you realize. and i agree with whoever said lentils. as a vegetarian, they're my go-to nutritional food. those and mushrooms are my main meat replacers. |

i personally don't like eating them, but i do fall back on them sometimes. if i haven't had time to fix a lunch or i need to run out the door and i know i'm going to be somewhere for mealtime where i won't have access to food i normally eat, i will grab one. i'm a vegetarian so i stick to non-meat options. i prefer amy's light in sodium but i've grabbed healthy choice and lean cuisine sometimes too. it is easy when i'm on the run and want to log my food because i don't have to worry about measuring or anything, and i think, as with everything else that isn't so great for you, in moderation, it isn't a bad thing. i wouldn't recommend eating them every day for lunch, but if it's the difference between eating that or grabbing fast food, i definitely think it's the lessor of two evils. |

i'm also a southern gal and i had to start doing this once i went vegetarian. when i began changing my dietary lifestyle, it became even more important. i have bento boxes and i use them all the time for food on the go. because they're small they help with portion control and they're totally portable and also adorable. also, being a vegetarian helps me turn down other people's food. for some reason people seem to be offended if i decline their food because i'm watching my caloric intake, but if i say i'm a vegetarian for some reason they mind this less. with my family i tend to have to remind them that i'm there for their company, not for their food, and my choice to not eat it isn't an insult towards them, nor is it me passing judgment on what they're choosing to eat. |

i need to rediscover my motivation, too. it has been so, so hot this summer i can barely peel myself out of my clothes, let alone get in my workout garb and purposefully break a sweat. even with my a/c on it's 85 degrees in my apartment, and i can only afford to run it a few hours a day, so it's been over 90 degrees most of the day in my place. i guess i should just figure i'm sweaty anyway and go for it but the heat just saps my energy dry. |

| Foods | Does anyone eat Quinoa or Chia seeds? | Jun 20 2012 12:18 (UTC) |

i love quinoa, i sub it for rice all the time. i soak and rinse, though, even if the package says it's already been soaked and rinsed, because bitter quinoa is nothing you want to taste!
one of my favorite ways to eat quinoa is took cook it in faux chik'n broth (i'm a veggie) with a two to one liquid to quinoa ratio. then i chop a mexican zucchini and a tomato, add some black beans (i cook my own in the crock pot and freeze them to avoid eating canned foods as much as possible) and maybe a colored bell pepper if they're on sale, and some shredded cheddar cheese and some seasoning (cumin, cayenne, whatev) and then mash half an avocado and mix it all together. the avocado helps bind everything, and if you mix the zucchini and peppers in while the quinoa is still hot it cooks enough to be crisp tender without getting soggy or having to cook it separately. you can use the same theory to do a mediterranean flavor instead of mexican (change the seasonings, sub for feta, sub for chickpeas, whatev) and it pretty much becomes a base for whatever you can imagine. leftovers are yummy in a wrap or tortilla with some shredded lettuce. |

i give it the charles atlas seal of approval. and honestly, sometimes just because it is small and easy to clean i feel i'm more likely to use it than if i had to wash my big bulky blender every time i wanted a smoothie. nothing wrong with making it easier on yourself! |

yeah, it's compact. i used to bring it to work with me to make a smoothie for lunch. it's quiet and i can rinse it out under warm water and it pretty much comes clean. it's dishwasher safe, too, though. i still have my regular blender for other jobs but this one is my smoothie go-to! |

yeah, sorry i didn't specify, i posted a smoothie recipe and it has spinach in it. i use both fresh and frozen and have no problems with either. handles ice well, too, although i personally don't use ice in my smoothies. |

i make a smoothie i drink post workout that i love. don't really have set measurements because i do everything on a food scale and just write down what i'm putting in as i go:
large handful of fresh spinach if i have it, if not i use frozen couple large spoons of nonfat vanilla or plain yogurt half scoop vanilla whey protein powder spoonful of wheat germ some cucumber, about a third of one, with the peel about a quarter of an avocado a chunk of frozen banana (when they get ripe i cut them into pieces and freeze them and they're perfect for smoothies) a kiwi or some honeydew melon chunks or both (again, i'll cut these into chunks and keep them in the freezer- i stock up whenever it's on sale!) then i pour in just enough juice to have liquid enough for the blender, maybe a third of a cup
the taste and the texture come out perfectly. and it's pretty. very light and refreshing and mildly sweet with no particular overpowering taste, and thick enough to feel satisfying without having to eat, because personally, i cannot eat right after working out but i always feel sort of shaky and exhausted so it's a good way to get something into my system.

The side effects of allergy medications keep some people from using them. Natural remedies can be a great alternative, but some are more effective than others.
