Weight Loss Going off birth control - will that help me to lose weight? Oct 08 2011

Thanks so much for your advice!

To be honest at first I did think I was just eating more, so I started counting my calories to the extreme.  A stick of gum, spray butter - anything and everything gets counted.  So hopefully I'll start to notice a change fairly soon.

Thanks again!

I heard that can happen, but it's pretty rare.  I was on a website that reviewed the nuva ring and 9 out of 10 people were complaining about the weight gain and bloat that I was.  Too bad my body didnt react the way yours did!

I actually plan on going off of birth control all together.  The reason I was on it was to regulate my period, and this weight gain is not worth it.

My bmi was about 19, so it was on the low end but not technically underweight.  Even if I lost at least 10 lbs. I think I'd be happy.  But I'm miserable with this weight gain. I hate people seeing me this way (I know I"m not overweight, but gaining 20 lbs. in a year on anyone is going to make he/she feel uncomfortable), and I'm beyond frustrated that it's not going anywhere.

I'm not being on weight loss supplements, because most of the time it messes with your metabolism, and once you stop taking them, it slows right back down.  So if you don't change your eating habits, the weight usually comes right back.

However, my friend recently tried Sensa.  He's forty lbs. overweight, and decided to give it a go.  Sensa is supposed to tell your body it's full faster than normal, so you start to eat less.  He has been eating about half of what he normally eats, and after about five pm he says he says he can't even eat a snack.  I've heard a lot of success stories from this - because once you stop taking it your stomach has actually shrunk, so you keep eating less.  And, your metabolism doesn't get all messed up.

So if you feel like you need to try something to help - I would give that a go. I was even considering it if this dieting and exercise doesn't help after so long.

Good luck =]

Weight Loss Why did I GAIN weight???!! Jul 27 2011

Really?  Congrats on the weight loss!  I do get plenty of protein in my diet (at least according to this website).  I also try not to restrict too much on carbs, just because I know that if I cut them out and start eating them again the weight usually comes back.  I'm trying to still eat fats, protein, and carbs in my diet, but in a healthy balance (obviously).

I just don't understand how I could gain 3 lbs. more of muscle in two months.  I thought I had lost 1-3 lbs, just because of how my pants were feeling slightly looser.

The only thing I may change is my activity setting.  I currently have it at sedentary and only log certain things - I log work (I'm a bank teller and am on my feet all day, and honestly after working 9-4 I only burn 320 calories) and my cardio.  I don't log anything else like cleaning, etc.  What could I be doing wrong?

My period ended last week so that can't be it.

I am a female, 5'5.5" and I currently weigh 132.  My goal weight is 118ish (I was happy with my weight at 118, but I wasn't lifting - if I fit into those pants and I'm 120 from muscle mass that's fine with me).  Certain days I eat differently - it depends on my activity level.  Somedays I'll eat 1800 calories and do a 1.5 hrs on the elliptical (so I'll have a 600 calorie deficit), somedays I'll eat above that, but I do extra cardio to burn off the excess I eat.  I eat healthy, my biggest downfall is peanut butter, but it's not like I'm eating a jar a day.  i eat all whole grains, plenty of vegetables.

I actually thought I had lost weight - my pants aren't as tight.

Foods I Love Cheese Jul 09 2011

I too, LOVE cheese.  One thing I've found that I love are the laughing cow wedges (my favorites are the light garlic and herb and the light swiss).  It's only 35 calories per wedge (1.5 g of fat) and one wedge goes along way. It's like a spread - It's great on sandwiches, for grilled cheese, and I even use it on my pasta.  It' great for snacking too - I'll use it with carrots or celery instead of ranch dressing.  This way I can satisfy my cheese cravings without loading up on calories or fat.

Thanks for the post!  That was really helpful - I'm going to stick with what I'm doing - I'd rather underestimate what I'm burning than overestimate.

Also, maybe you can answer this question?

When I add my exercise, the activity log says I burned 900 (just an example).  My burn meter will go from 1600 to 2200.  I assume that the burn meter adds the time I exercised and subtracts what I normally would burn in that same amount of time (another words it compensates for the sitting I didn't do and subtracts it).  I keep seeing people saying they are determining how much they burned by the activity log, but I go by my burn meter - if I normally burn 1600 and I burned 2100, that means I burned 500 in the activity.  Is that the way to do it?

Weight Loss Am I exercising too much to lose weight? Jun 09 2011

I'm going through the exact same thing as well.  I was aiming for a deficit of 7000 calories a week to lose two pounds (I have a bmi of 22).  I noticed I wasn't losing weight and was bloated every day (and it's not TTOM).  The past week I cut my daily deficit down by about 350 calories (about -900 calories), and I've already started to notice the difference.  I'm not bloated like I was before.  Now I'm just waiting to see if I lose weight.  I too, love to exercise, and instead of cutting back on my gym time I actually added the 400 calories to what I eat.  I know, that seems odd - feeling slimmer by eating more.

As tina0367 said, 2 lbs. is not realistic when you are at a healthy bmi (which you are).  When you don't need to lose weight your body gets confused, and tries to hold onto everything.  Hence the bloating.  Also, someone told me that with such a large deficit when you're only trying to lose vanity lbs. you will burn muscle and store fat, which is not what you want.  Someone told me on one of my posts - similar to yours actually - that when you are trying to lose vanity lbs., you should aim for a daily deficit of 250-500 calories max (I know I mentioned mine is around 900, but I wanted to slowly decrease my daily deficit to see when I would start to lose weight - I still want to lose as much as I can per week).

So for anyone still reading this post.

I weighed myself four days ago and I weighed 128 (empty stomach, morning).  Today was under the same circumstances, and I gained three pounds!  I've been eating super healthy, eating roughly 1900 calories a day and have been doing the same amount of exercise.  What could have caused the weight gain?  My dad suggested that since I'm not overweight, my body may not want to lose weight, and therefore is holding on to anything it can.  Would this make sense?  I'm not getting my period, and with a deficit of 900-1200 calories a day (according to this website) this week I have no idea how I could have gained even more weight.  I feel like I'm getting the opposite results of what I want :(

@ mermaid - To be honest I don't want to be a size 0.  When I was 115 I was a 4 or a small 5/6 - I have hips.  Now my I'm a big 5/6.

@ amethystgirl - It's actually funny that you mention that.  I talked to my doctor yesterday and asked if I could be recommended to a doctor that specialized with people who suffer from eating disorders.  I'm also going to start seeing an eating disorders psychologist as well to get myself in the right mindset.  I'm letting this affect my entire life - my relationships, my hobbies, etc. - and I just want to be happy again.  I know that in the long run that my weight does not define me, and I'm not even overweight.  But being uncomfortable with my body every waking moment makes it almost impossible to be happy, especially I'm working so hard and not getting anywhere.

@TMill91 - I'm glad to hear that someone has also had something similar like this happen to them - thanks for sharing your story!  I do agree, I switched restrictive eating for obsessive exercising.  Back in October I tried to start eating more to gain three pounds (I was underweight), but I went into refeeding syndrome.  After restricting myself for 2 years it just happened, and I lost control.  In January I got a gym membership because I knew I was having a hard time eating normally.  These past few months I've really started to be able to control my eating habits again, and I figured with the exercise I'd start to lose some of the weight I gained.

@Kelrantymus - I actually was going by what the elliptical at the gym said I burned.  But this past week (on one of my other posts), I started going by what this site says I burn.  It's about 250-300 calories less per hour!  So the past week and a half I've been burning about 1200 via 2 hours + 40 minutes on the elliptical according to this site.  (Hopefully now that I'v cut back to about 1800-2000) I'll start noticing more results!

I do want to mention I am a dietetics major.  I know that by eating 1800 and exercising even a hour a day I should slowly lose the weight.  However I haven't seen results.  So that's why I'm trying to up the exercise to 2-3 hours.  Even if I could lose 4-6 lbs. a month, I'd be almost at my goal by the end of July/August.  I don't want to lose weight at an unhealthy rate; I just want to see some progress.  Yes, I'm definitely more toned than I was a few months ago, but still no weight loss.

I try to stay positive and tell myself, it's only a few months, and then I'll be comfortable again.  However after six months of telling myself that and not getting anywhere, is getting very depressing.  I ideally would only like to go to the gym an hour or so a day - this 2-3 six days of the week is getting tiresome.  BUT hopefully I'll start seeing results now that I'm not overestimating my calorie output by going by what the machine says, and I can see if an hour a day will help me to lose even 1 lb. a week (my new mantra to stay positive haha).  I also hope that this psychologist will help me mentally, because I need to come to terms with my issues.  LIke you said tmill91, I can't stay the same size forever.

Again, thank you all for responding!  I really appreciate all the input.

Thank you both for your responses.

I'm eating about 1800-1900 calories a day and exercising at least 2 hours a day now to have a deficit of around 1200.  I know it's extreme, but I am so uncomfortable and depressed at this weight.  I don't want to be underweight again - but at a lower weight that is acceptable for my height.

I weighed myself and I'm now at 128 (on an empty stomach in the morning) - I don't understand.  My doctor tested me for hypothyroidism and it came back negative.  I count my calories and eat healthy (my idea of a treat is weight watcher's ice cream), and I obviously get plenty of exercise.  But my clothes are still tight (most of my jeans don't fit), and I am so embarrassed.

Does anyone have any advice?  I really don't want to start cutting back calories, but I'm afraid that if I don't start to lose weight I'll have no choice.

Thanks so much!  I'm currently recovering from an ED, and am really conscious about my calories.  I'm at a healthy weight and don't want to keep gaining, so I just wanted to make sure it wouldn't be a substantial difference.  I counted an extra twenty just to make myself better.  Thanks for the advice =]

Health & Support How do "regular" people eat? Jul 28 2010

I too have the same questions that you have.  I know that most people eat until they are full, but in articles I have read people are supposed to eat until they are satisfied, because the mind takes 20 minutes to register whether or not it is full.

I have the same issue - I feel very constrained with meal times (i think I associate it with a lack of control).  But otherwise I noticed I had a hard time stopping eating (I never binged on anything unhealthy and rarely overate), but I still had a much more difficult time controlling myself.  As abbi333 said, we can't expect to have a normal mindset, so we have to reset our hunger cues.

I'm set to light activity.  I walk everyday for exercise and then basic activities (light cleaning, shopping, etc). I know how much I eat for a day without work to maintain my weight, so I figured I would add the extra calories burned from work to keep maintaining (I do know that I need to eat more - since I've started working the past month I've lost two pounds, which I don't want to do).

Maintaining Obsessed with calorie counting because I don't trust myself May 16 2010

My situation is pretty similar to yours.  I was anorexic when I was 16, and from 17-21 I just estimated calories.  FOr the past year and a half I've been doing the same as you - measuring every little thing (I even  measured a tbsp. of celery), I avoid forbidden foods, and didn't get my menses for over a year.  I was really concerned about missing my period for so long, so I talked to my OBGYN about it. She said since I'm at the lowest end of my healthy weight range and not severely underweight, she wanted me to start birth control.  She obviously advised I seek help for my eating habits to get more period back normally, but she didn't want my reproductive system to become permanently damaged, so the birth control is almost a temporary fix.  I wouldn't be surprised if they put you on some form of birth control for a period of time, just to make sure no permanent damage is caused.

If you do start birth control, here is a warning: don't let that "temporary solution" give you a reason to continue the eating habits you currently have.  I know at first I considered the medicine a way to continue my lifestyle AND get my menses.  But luckily seeing someone helped me to realize that is not the answer. I'm glad to hear you are seeing a psychiatrist too - I know for me at least the appointments really help.  Good luck with everything!

Maintaining New to maintaining... what's my activity level? Any idea how many calories I should be eating? Feb 14 2010

I think my concern is that I've been maintaining for a few months on 1550 after the initial weight loss.  I didn't think my calories were low enough for my metabolism to go into starvation mode.  I just assumed that my body would maintain itself on these calories.  However, after not getting my period for a few months, I figured that maybe that is the case.

I think I'm just going to add a few hundred calories and continue to weigh myself.  If I start to notice a weight gain, I'll cut back on calories.

Thanks for all the help!

I took a look at all those sites, and besides calorie count I usually got 1770-1870 (this website said I should be eating 1540).  So I'm upping my calories to about 1750 and seeing how it goes.  I know I may initially gain some water weight, but how long after can I tell if I'm gaining water weight or actual weight?
