| I actually skipped the cilantro because I didn't have any fresh on hand either, but I'd really recommend not skipping the tomatos... they really add something to this soup!! | |||

Well, it's been over a year since I've had mine. I went to the doctor and she was unconcerned. For my own peace of mind, she did run tests on my thyroid and hormone levels and did my pap... all came back normal. She said that it could be due to my body still adjusting from the weight loss combined with the depo-provera shot I had last February (a year ago), so not to worry. |

Tamalyn When I started this journey, I was very much in the same boat as you are. My starting weight was over 298 pounds and a size 26/28. In the past 18 months, I've managed to shed over 150 pounds without surgery, drugs or any other "magic bullet." You can TOO!! When I first started out, I didn't exercise at all. I don't think I really incorporated exercise until after about 25 pounds had dropped. Then I started just walking 20 minutes a day on the treadmill at about 2.5-3.0 miles an hour depending on how much I could tolerate. I gradually pushed myself to do just a little bit more each week. Sometimes, 20 minute walks twice a day. After a while, I was doing 3.0 miles an hour okay for half hour or better, so I added a bit of incline and increased from there. Once I was doing okay on the treadmill with a fair incline and 3.5 miles an hour, I switched to the elliptical machine and started challenging myself there. Started out with 10 minutes or so on top of my 20 minutes of treadmill. Before long, I was able to do 20 minutes on the elliptical with no problem and started increasing resistance there, too until I was able to do 40 minutes straight at level 8 resistance. By this time, I was feeling and looking a whole lot better, so I switched back to the treadmill and started running. 4.5 miles an hour to start for say 1/2 a mile and then doing my elliptical routine too. The stairmaster machine is WONDERFUL for working the leg and glute muscles you've been developing with your walking and elliptical workouts, so I moved on to the stairmaster just at level 1 for 5 minutes or so. The point is to keep pushing yourself to do just a little bit more as your stamina and fitness level increases. Now, I do 25 minutes of serious cardio on the stairmaster at level 11 and feel FANTASTIC!! Mind you, this was gradual over the course of months and months. My best advice during this time is DON'T SKIP days (I did M-F and took the weekends off for working out). You'll need to develop this as a habit. After a while, if I didn't work out for the day, I felt "off" or "weird" about the day and just had to get my butt up and moving. While you're doing this and combining it with sensible portions and healthy choices for food, you'll find your energy and stamina begin to rise while your weight steadily drops. Incorporate some strength training as you can. Push yourself, but listen to the signals your body is giving you. You'll find your appetite and cravings subside as your body returns to a more normalized and healthy state. Your blood pressure and resting heart rate will lower and you'll feel fabulous!! You can do it!! Feel free to drop me a line any time you're feeling discouraged or need some tips, I'll be happy to help!! Rae |

| Weight Loss | Pedometers: 10,000 Steps A Day | Mar 08 2007 16:08 (UTC) |

I bought a pedometer not too long ago and I have learned through reading... that the average person takes between 3000-4000 steps per day. For myself, 10000 steps keeps me on my feet and moving most of the day. I was surprised! Even with a moderately active lifestyle, I average about 7500-8000 steps per day according to my fancy pedometer. On days I feel like I've been moving non-stop, I hit about 15000 steps a day. Pedometers are kinda neat; however, I wish I could correlate average daily steps to an activity level (sedentary, light, moderate, etc.) Anyone have any ideas on that? |

Another point lost in the void of ego.... c'est la vie. *edit* And for the record, I held my father's hand as he died from kidney failure during emergency dialysis (after undergoing dialysis 3x a week for nearly two years). AGAIN, a completely irrelevant comment, but since you asked. |

And just what, exactly, does someone's religious beliefs and practices have to do with a discussion surrounding "detoxification" particularly when discussed in the vein of comparing said detoxification to the religious beliefs and/or practices of another individual (and whole other culture) which may or may not be contrary to your own? Something that doesn't agree with your own ideals or values doesn't automatically earn the label of "crazy" or "stupid" as you so eloquently put it, whether that be regarding detoxification diets, spirituality or any other platform for that matter. My point is... those kinds of comments don't belong here. You can make your point without the inflammatory comparisons. You don't see me running around here talking smack about all the bible thumping fundamentalists, do you? No. I respect every individual's right to their beliefs, opinions and practices even when they do not agree with my own as well as respecting their right to voice them in a forum free from hostility and insult. Make your point intelligently or don't make it at all. My apologies for the blunt directness of my post, but this type of behavior has no place here and is the reason why threads end up locked. Carry on. |

"must be the same crazies who are out there aligning their shakras" Yanno, sometimes, the way these threads deteriorate from a discussion worthy of merit and reason into sludge-flinging insult festivals just never ceases to amaze me. For the record, there ARE people that believe chakra (and if you're going to insult it, spell it right) and energy work are vastly beneficial and many more from Eastern religions who incorporate it into their spiritual/religious life. Maybe you could just stick to rubbing mashed potatoes on your head... it might insult fewer people. Diversity awareness, people. Seriously. Out. |

This is a really good thread! I've been contemplating a cleanse (not for weight loss reasons, I'm done losing weight) but for health reasons. I am interested in hearing both views and this has provided a great forum for both! I'm not sure I could give up my caffeine though... |

Creature of habit here. I have oatmeal almost every morning for breakfast. Somtimes steel cut oatmeal, depending on how I'm doing for time. I mix up the toppings a bit though. Sometimes, I add raisins, sometimes blueberries, this morning I added raspberries... occasionally, I'll chop up some pecans and toss them in there or some peanut butter. I just LOVE my oatmeal. Seems like the day can't start off right without it or without my coffee!! |

| I still haven't had mine (over a year now) and I did go to the doctor. She tested my thyroid and tested to see if I was perhaps in early menopause, but both tests came back normal. LOL, now what? She thinks perhaps my weight loss over the past year and a half shocked my system? | |||
