I can't help you in terms of what you should be eating, but I just want to let you know that you're not alone. I'm a BMI of 22.4, up from a BMI of 18 last year. I don't know exactly what to eat to maintain my weight, I never have more than 2500 but I still gain. I also just go for walks for exercise most days. We're at ideal weights, but I know how much you want to be back at BMI 19 or so. It's so hard. Feel free to message or e-mail me if you need someone to vent to. xx |

I was on Levelin for a month and gained around 5-8lb, which I am struggling to get rid of. I'm now on Yaz and so far so good. People say the pill shouldn't make you gain weight, but I swear that's a myth! So many people I know have gained weight on the pill, you're not overeating or miscalculating your intake. If Yaz worked for you, why is it that you can't keep taking it? |

That looks to be more like 2100 to me, although you could afford to have as much as 2500 I'd bet. =) I have 2000-2500 to maintain my weight, and I'm lightly to moderately active(I walk for 30-60 minutes or workout). It looks very healthy and balanced to me, and very similarly structured to my diet actually! =P 3 meals and 3 snacks is the best way to go. |

Cool.. I guess my ED is just being a pain! I keep imagining that I've gained weight on my stomach and thighs, because I haven't weighed myself in a while. But I haven't eaten any more than 2500 calories. |

So, my ED is winning, and I've decided to lose a couple of kgs to feel a little more comfortable with how I look. I'm not going to restrict or starve, so the numbers will comply with the 1500 limit. I'm a healthy weight now, and will still be healthy once I'm done.. I'm a BMI of 21 and would like to get to 20, and that's it. =) Wish me luck.. Yesterday wasn't a fantastic day, so I'll start from today. I'll post my eats once I've reached the end of the day. |

Mochacafe: Mm.. I love greek yoghurt with honey and granola. <3 Chutney is like.. Hmm.. Somewhat like a chunky jam you use on roast meats and sometimes bread. I suck at descriptions, hahaha! Actinggal: Oh wow, I wouldn't have said you were gaining weight, just by looking at what you're eating. I eat around the same amount, to maintain. =) I hope you aren't worrying that you're overeating or anything. Calories aren't everything, it's probably healthier not to count obsessively. So, I gained 300 grams(period is due, no wonder) but meh. Nothing to worry about.. I hit 60kg which makes my ED squeal like a girl, but it's no big deal. Breakfast~ 50g rice bubbles with soymilk and splenda. Morning Tea~ A skim mocha with a duck(yes, I made ducks!) biscuit, an orange Lunch~ A chili chicken, cheese, mayo and salad roll. Afternoon Tea~ A pear, tuna with egg and mayo on salads Dinner~ 2 kangaroo(yes, we eat them!) mince mini flour tacos with salads, cheese and light sour cream. Dessert~ 2 scoops of light cookies n cream icecream, a cup of apple and mango juice, a choc ripple biscuit. Exercise~ 30 minutes cross trainer. |

Florence: I can understand your concern. It's frightening as all hell, and I struggle with the same fears. I just keep eating and remind myself that I am sticking to guidelines and if I gain, it'll just be because my body needs to adjust. If you still need to gain weight, you should take that as a chance to eat a sufficient amount and repair your metabolism. If you have room for weight fluctuations, it will be a lot easier to do than say, when you're at your target weight. =) Mochacafe: I love the sound of the yoghurt you had!! I love mango, but funnily enough I don't eat them as they are. =P I have mango chutney(which my mum makes) and sorbet. Actinggal: Hey there! Your eats look very healthy, you have no reason to be scared of the numbers! I don't add mine up here, but I know what they are anywho. What's a Kind bar like, by the way? I live in Australia, so I'm always curious to know what the bars in the US/UK are like! We mostly have protein or diet bars here, so I don't eat them. I like muesli bars, though. Yesterday was fantastic, had a nice night watching movies and eating healthy pizza! Breakfast~ 66g cinnamon granola with 150g fat free greek yoghurt and honey Morning Tea~ A soy mocha with a teddybear biscuit, an apple Lunch~ A toasted tuna, cheese, mayo and salad sandwich, a tropical flavoured water. Afternoon Tea~ A pear, 4 ryvitas sandwiched with PB & J. Dinner~ 4 small slices of a variety of thin crust pizzas(hawaiian, chicken and cashew, seafood) Dessert~ A skinny cow sundae. |

Florence: I maintained my weight on around 1500 calories for a long while, too, so I understand how it is hard to justify eating more. You can rest assured that if you ate a healthy amount(2000+) you will not gain bucketloads of weight. Hell, I used to binge when I was on that intake and I didn't gain! Your body needs more energy. You can survive on that much, sure, but you won't be giving your body the chance to function at its best. I also think if you started your day with the mindset of 'I can eat more than 2000' you would allow yourself bigger snacks. Instead of having a couple of spoonfuls of yoghurt, you could have a cup, little things like that. 1500-1600 is a weight loss amount.
I seem to be back onto the 2500 a day plan.. I'm nervous about it, but I have no reason to be, I have maintained my weight over the past week(save for 100 grams =P) and my friends are urging me to keep eating a good amount. I can do it, I know I can, I just need to trust my body and know that I won't just keep gaining. Oh, and I don't need to work out every single day; I was feeling sick this morning(yes, I am a little worried that I could be pregnant.. not good) and my feet are hurting so I just said 'stuff it, I'll go for a walk later'. Yesterday was good, aside from the fact that I had to cram in some calories in the evening.. Breakfast~ 60g Special K with low fat soymilk and splenda. Morning Tea~ A skim mocha with a mini anzac(australian biccies), two small apples. Lunch~ McDonalds classic chicken salad with balsamic dressing, an orange. Afternoon Tea~ 250g fat free greek yoghurt with honey, 3 plain sweet biscuits with tea. Dinner~ Almond, chicken and vegetable stir fry with rice. Dessert~ A skinny cow vanilla and chocolate sundae, a stringers cheese stick, a soy hot chocolate with two choc ripple biscuits. See what I mean about cramming? =P Hahaha. The lunch left me behind in terms of calories. Still a somewhat healthy day, in spite of that. I had 2400 calories all up. |

I notice that you say you're 'super skinny', which rings some alarm bells. If you are, it is likely you see your stomach as bigger because your perception is distorted. Are you naturally skinny, or did you lose weight? In either case, be careful. Fixating on certain areas of your body isn't healthy. |

I was the same BMI and the same age as you once upon a time, and all that I want you to know is that I regret ever trying to lose weight. Instead, you should focus on eating healthily and let your weight do what it wants to do. If you take up sports, eat a healthy amount for your body(I'm going to guess at least 2000 calories if you're active), you would likely lose weight without needing to restrict. You will likely find that you are still growing- scratch that, you ARE still growing, and your bmi will decrease naturally. You are young, don't let numbers worry you. I bet you are still a gorgeous young gal, and you shouldn't risk developing unhealthy obsessions. |

So, my weight went up 1kg, then back down 1kg, and I'm still unsure about how much I should be eating to maintain. 2500 consistently may be too much, so I tried 2300, and will just make sure I have 2000-2500 which means I can have SOME 2500 days, but mostly 2200ish. Seeing as having a few days on a higher intake made little effect on my weight, I can afford to eat more on occasion. =) Woot!
Breakfast~ - A bowl of rice bubbles with splenda and soymilk Morning Tea~ - A skim mocha, an orange Lunch~ - A turkey, salad and cheese sandwich, a cup of apple and mango juice Afternoon Tea~ - A pear, low fat natural yoghurt with honey, a small handful of white chocolate bits Dinner~ - Chicken tikka and rice Dessert~ - A skinny cow vanilla and chocolate sundae, three plain biscuits and tea
Exercise~ - 15 minutes brisk walking, 15 minutes cross-trainer |

As per usual, shane has highlighted tons of helpful tips regarding how to live a healthy lifestyle. But I would like to just tell you of how I maintain, as an active 16 year old girl, because it may be helpful to hear from someone in the same boat. =) I'm around 130lb, at 5'6-5'7, and I exercise most days(maybe 1 day off a week) for 30-60 minutes(running, walking and cross trainer). I eat 2000-2500 calories a day, but usually around 2200. Having said that, I can also maintain on 1800 calories a day, but this just means that my metabolism is suppressed and I get dizzy spells. So, I urge you not to live off the lowest amount your body can survive on. Eating a healthy amount does not = weight gain. You may find that your weight fluctuates, but it will eventually find a place where it can maintain. As shane pointed out in tip 1 and 7, you should try to be sure that you aren't trying to maintain a low weight. I made the mistake of thinking that, in spite of growing 2 inches, I could maintain the weight I was at before. Of course my body fought to get to where I am now, and I can eat a satisfying amount without weight gain. Good luck! |

Well, if it's any reassurance, I've managed to maintain on 2500 over the past few days. I may gain a little, I'm not sure, but I'm sticking to it and seeing how I go. I made a typo in my first post, by the way, so sorry if I confused you!! |

Mochacafe: Thanks!! I am so happy I went with my gut and ate all that I wanted. And guess what.. my weight today was exactly the same as it was about a month ago! Well, maybe 700 grams difference, but that's a fluctuation for me(I fluctuate between 1kg)! So I'm going to keep eating 2500 or more and just monitor my weight. If it starts creeping up, I can drop back to 2300 or something. No biggie. =) By the way, I love the look of your eats! I've never had clif or luna bars, but I would love to try them sometime! I eat just regular chocolate bars, because here in Australia we don't get clif or luna bars. So, yesterday was around 2600 calories if I were to count it all up. WOOT! With around 40 minutes of walking. I am SO surprised that I am able to maintain my weight with this intake. It's crazy to think that I maintained on only 1800 for ages.. I must have restricted big time! I feel so much brighter now, not dizzy at all, and most importantly FREE! Breakfast~ - A bowl of uncle toby's Plus fibre, with soymilk Morning Tea~ - A skim mocha with a mini anzac biscuit - An orange Lunch~ - A tuna, salad and cheese toasted sandwich - A large glass of apple and mango juice Afternoon Tea~ - A pear - A snickers bar - A handful of 'delicious mix': almond, pistachio, cranberry and white chocolate. Dinner~ - Vegetable pasta Dessert~ - Two scoops of So Good vanilla icecream with mixed berries - Two plain biscuits. |

Well.. Over the past couple of days I have been trying to eat according to my hunger, and to my surprise I wound up having 2500 yesterday with only 30 minutes of walking! I was so surprised, ahaha, but.. My stomach can't be wrong, I hope! My dietitian said I could have up to 2500 with walking daily, which I think I will try out. I'm not weighing myself, so I'll just need to judge my weight by how I look and feel. I'm too scared to weigh myself, as I can become obsessed. So, yesterday.. Breakfast~ - A bowl of Special K with lite soymilk Morning Tea~ - A skim mocha - Two mini cupcakes Lunch~ - Sumo salad: a medium container of half pumpkin + cous cous salad and half pesto chicken salad. - A gatorade. Afternoon tea~ - A pear - A vanilla mars bar - A handful of 'delicious mix': almonds, pistachios, white chocolate and cranberries. Dinner~ - Apricot chicken with rice - Mashed potato with vegetable sauce Dessert~ - Two scoops of mango sorbet - A hot chocolate made with hilo milk and cadbury drinking chocolate. |

I'm about the same BMI(5'7 and 59kg) and I'm 16 years old, and I exercise for around 30-60 minutes through walking. I have been told I can eat up to 2500 calories and maintain, so that's what I'm trying out at the moment. I used to gain on that amount but now I'm kind of trying to see whether I can maintain. It's difficult, sure, but it's possible! I do think, considering the amount of exercise you're doing, you could easily maintain on 2500, I'd say. It may take some getting used to, but I think you could do it. =) If you need any support feel free to message me, I'd love to be able to help if I can! *edit* I checked out this calculator which is designed for children/teenagers, and it should say you are able to have at least 2500 for an hour of exercise. =) Here you are: Healthy Eating Calculator |

Okay.. I had 2300 yesterday, and I think I might have the courage to have 2500. My gut is telling me to do it, to risk gaining a little weight for the sake of being healthy and free of my ED. I might even have 3000, I'm not sure just yet. But I am going to try. =) |

Anonymous: I was mildly overweight and overate before I developed an ED. I wasn't healthy by any means before I lost weight. I used to maintain a BMI of around 21 before I started to gain weight as a result from lack of exercise and too much food. I would have been eating 3000 calories or so, hence my BMI was 25. I will have eaten around 2300 calories by the end of today, which was a result of eating as much as my stomach desired and having high calorie foods like PB & J on ryvitas. I recall eating 2200 for a couple of days and losing weight, ahaha, so I think I will allow myself to eat this amount more often. I'd love to have 2500 a day, and I could easily do it, it's just the thoughts in my head which scream 'you'll gain if you have more than 2000!' I know for ED recovery Hedgren suggests someone my age should have 3000, but I am not prepared to go to a BMI of 24 or so in order to recover. I'm barely a BMI of 21, so I cannot fathom gaining quite so much! I gained more to get where I am now, but being close to overweight would scare the crap out of me. |
