This is my first update in several weeks!

I started at 207 pounds on May 1, 2007 - and joined this group at 188 pounds on June 12, 2007.

Well, it's now August 28 and I weigh 177.5 pounds! I uploaded two new photos of the progress, hahaha.

Thanks, all, for being a motivation - even just by being here!

Xx

A grilled cheese and bacon sandwich:

2 Weight Watchers Whole Wheat Bread slices
2 Maple Leaf Chicken (or Turkey) Bacon slices
2 Kraft Fat-Free American-Style Singles slices

Fry the chicken bacon with a fat/calorie0free cooking spray (I use Mazola). Spray one side of each slice of bread with a fat/calorie-free "margarine" (I use Becel) and place one on the frying pan. Add the slice of cheese, add the fried chicken, add the other slice of cheese, add the other slice of bread. Press down with a spatula and flip after 4 or 5 minutes. It's less than 300 calories.

Then as a side I make a huge salad with about three pieces of lettuce, green/red/yellow/orange peppers sliced (roughly 4-8 oz), fresh mushrooms sliced, a Roma tomato sliced, strawberries sliced, etc... I use quite a bit of low-fat Parmesan cheese and 30 grams of crumbled Feta cheese - it's so good I don't need as much dressing. I pretty much eat everything with just the cheese and then use some raspberry dressing to get the left-over lettuce and cheese bits down. The salad usually works out to about 200 calories.

I drink water with the meal and then I have a tablespoon of Fibre 1 cereal dry and a can of diet pepsi.

Every scale is different, Palluu. I have a digital scale - one of those ones you have to tap, then wait for the 0.0, and then step on. When you tap it, it takes a bunch measurements about its location (angle, etc.) - when I step on it, it operates under the measurements it took before. If I stand on the top edge of the scale and lean it forward slightly, my weight is significantly lower - if I stand at the bottom edge and lean it backwards, my weight is slightly higher. If I tap it in one location, wait for the 0.0, and then quickly move it to another location in the house, I can get weights as low as 140 pounds (I'm 184.5 right now).

All you need to do is try to keep it in a location where, when you step on it, it doesn't shift in any direction. Try to stand in the middle of it and don't move around too much while its measuring.

I love the Sweet and Sour Chicken from Lean Cuisine. The flavour is excellent and authentic - it doesn't taste like a low-fat meal, it tastes like a smaller portion of a high-fat meal.

Weight Watcher's Smart Ones... I haven't found one I liked much yet. The Szeszhuan (sp?) Chicken one was absolutely horrid. I couldn't even finish the whole portion - the flavour was sssooo thick and strong it turned my stomach.

My favourite:

12" Sweet Onion Chicken Teriyaki
Wheat or Honey Oat bread
No cheese
Not toasted
Lettuce
A little tomato (four slices is plenty)
Lots of onion
Some green peppers
A pickle or two
Salt & pepper
Sweet Onion sauce

Woohoo! :)

Two pounds lost so far - despite a weekend in the city with friends: take-out three times a day for two days, eek! I even had crepes with that hollandaise sauce or whatever its called, hahaha... and THIRDS at Mongo's Grill. I've also been going over my calories a little (I'm aiming for 1,800 a day but keep going 2,200 one day, 1,900 the next, etc.)...

So, it's going well. I'm working out a lot more, etc... so far so good. How about you guys?

Thanks for all your answers, guys! I've a few to check out for sure!

I'll share some more, mainly wind-down ones this time around.

cshammas00: Yes, I like Amir Diab also - Habibi ya nour al'ein is my favourite song by him. Egyptian music is good but it's not as varied as Lebanese music, I find. You can pretty much tell if a song is Egyptian after the first verse, you know what I mean? Much like Moroccan, but Arabic in Morocco is sssooo nasal you can recognize that instantly (it's REALLY addictive if you can stand it).

Here's an example, Samira Said from Morocco with Youm wara youm

Here are a few examples of some Lebanese artists for you, the best. ;) Elissa is an unimaginably respected singer in the Arab world. As you can imagine, with an ancient language like Arabic there are very, strong cultural expectations from the public. The closest way I could explain it is to compare it with how Italians feel about Opera music - if one note is off, they'll leave the opera house. It's not unusual at all for the most popular opera singers in the country to be booed off the stage one night, for a crack in the voice, and get a standing ovation the next. Elissa is the type of singer that has never been booed off the stage in the Middle East.

Elissa - Aychalak

Here's an example of a very... interesting, complicated... Arab celebrity - Lebanon's Haifa Wehbe. She's the type of woman that perfectly represents the expression, "There is no black and white, only shades of grey". She's very American in her music style (this video, for example, is a tribute to Marilyn Monroe), but she's a devoted supporter of Hezbollah (she was even almost killed twice during the last Israeli-Lebanese conflict). She wears revealing clothing and was voted the Sexiest Woman in the Middle East by America's People Magazine, she even has a song called Ana Haifa (Yeah, I'M Haifa!) - yet she's known for her genuine sense of humility...? She's just a very interesting character. ;) She's also something like Paris Hilton - everyone's certain she can't really sing but no one cares.

Haifa Wehbe - Ma andi habib

Dolly Chahine will be last. She's from northern Lebanon where Arabic is spoken slightly deeper in the throat. It's considered somewhat... redneck? By some, but I truly love it.

Dolly Chahine - Moumou Eini

When people say such things to you it's about them and not you. There are two factors that need to come together for people to react to you in that way - and both should make you feel better about yourself.

Firstly, these people have to view you as being in a better position than they are. This could be related to anything, really - finances, beauty, weight, whatever the case may be. Then, they also need to be struggling with their own issues - which may or may not be related to weight but probably are related to body image.

These two factors are probably present in at least half of the people in your life - probably more because you're obviously an attractive young woman. That's why they snap back at you... it's their way of saying, "Get over yourself! If I was you, I'd finally be satisfied!".

It's a part of human nature you're never going to change. You just have to recognize it for what it is and take it as a pat on the back, take it as a compliment.

So far I've managed to remain within one hundred calories either side of 1,800 per day - which is the number of calories I'll need to remain at my ideal weight once I reach it.

I started at 187.5 and I'm now 185.5. Two pounds over two days is far too much weight to lose, I'm aware, but I'm certain it's just normal, daily weight fluctuations. I weigh myself first thing in the morning, but I'm usually over 190 pounds if I weigh myself in the middle of the afternoon.

In any event, I'm losing weight on 1,800 calories a day so that's very nice. I was eating 2,300 a day to get down from 207 pounds, where I started five weeks before joining this community. I'm eating even healthier (consuming foods with fewer calories) so, over the past two days, I've actually had to have a light beer and a banana in the early evening to reach 1,800 calories per day. It's very nice having a minimum to aim for as well (1,500 calories per day) - that's what I was missing when I was doing this on my own.

So that's it for me thus far. :)

Just follow the cultural eating habits of the French and you should be fine. Many European countries have similar eating habits â?? including countries like Croatia and Bosnia, where the number of obese people is often 1 in several thousand â?? as high as 1 in 14,000 in northern Bosnia (unlike 1/3 in much of North America).

People in these areas eat tremendously fatty foods but they eat on a different schedule than North Americans do. Breakfast is a huge meal in many of these countries, one that accounts for between 1/3 and 1/2 of the day's consumption of calories. It's also broken into phases. My friend Esmira, a Bosnian Muslim, does the same thing for breakfast every day. She gets up, has a cigarette (bad, I know) and a cup of Bosanska Kahva (Bosnian Coffee, Turkish Coffee would be the North American equivalent). That takes a half hour. Then she has some fresh fruit and vegetables just sliced and eaten raw. Then she WALKS downtown for a few pastries and some spicey sausages called Cevapi.

Lunch in most of Europe, especially in France, is a long, drawn-out affair. People eat slowly, drink lots, and consume many, many servings of fruits and vegetables with their meals. Esmira, for example, has lunch with her coworkers from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. There's always lots of conversation, lots of distraction. After lunch there's always a high-fat snack - in France it tends to be a pastry, in Bosnia it tends to be ice-cream. That's pretty much the last major boost of calories for the rest of the day.

Supper in France and, again, much of Europe, is small. A little snack to stop satisfy the hunger, nothing big.

Follow that pattern, the one you see the locals doing, and you should be able to come back a little better off than you'd be otherwise â?? though, I'm certain, you'll still gain a little. But, come on, it's Paris! You have to be able to live free of worries sometimes and it's only 2 weeks.

Sounds good, guys!

So far today I've consumed 1,554 calories, including a beer earlier. I'll probably have a banana or something later to bump myself a little farther away from the danger zone.

It's nice to have a target at least - I know a lot more than I did before I signed up so thanks all! :)

Weight Loss Why you should eat more than 1200/1500 cals per day... Jun 12 2007

Thank you for the post, cjeka! I've been calorie counting since the beginning of May and there was a period of about three days where I felt cold and tired. That's probably what it was.

I'm going to aim for 1,500 ? 1,800 calories per day for the time being, always getting more than 1,500 but less than 1,800. This site recommends 1,800 calories to maintain my ideal weight and says I need 2,300 to remain at the weight I am now. Do you think the 1,500-1,800 plan is reasonable?

http://www.hungry-girl.com/chew/index.php

This site has some very creative ways of faking some of your favourite fast food meals at home. Some are delicious, some are a bit of a stretch... but it's worth checking out. I recommend their grilled cheese sandwich, popcorn shrimp, and chicken parmesan.

I don't recommend their chicken fingers â?? they're only a few calories less than the frozen, "pub style" kind you can get at the supermarket and don't taste nearly as good.

I notice you're 15, Kariudo, so I have a little advice not really related to weight loss. It's so important for young women to realize the images they see in the media are directed at them. The thin models wearing the designer clothes aren't trying to achieve the admiration of their families, friends, or young men â?? they're there to sell something to young women. If you asked every young man in your town what body type he prefers in a woman, I guarantee the model's body would rank near the bottom. This is something companies are doing to you to market their product â?? they intentionally make you feel crappy about yourself because then you buy their product for emotional, rather than logical, reasons. Not only are they able to sell more products that way, they're able to sell them at a higher price. So just remember that â?? and remind yourself that these models don't reflect what the preferences are in our society. Why do you think J'Lo is so popular? Why do you think Selma Hayek is so popular? Because they have a normal body type.

Just last week I read an article about how the cover of a Canadian political magazine, featuring a picture of a university student, has become the favourite pin-up of Canadian soldiers in Afghanistan. They love her because she's NOT a model, and soldiers are actually trading piles of dirty magazines to get their hands on this political one (it's similar to Time Magazine in the States). No Kate Moss or Paris Hilton or Nicole Richie... that's the way it is in the real world.

5'10 and 144 isn't that bad, Sophie. If you're still feeling fat, and it's not just in your head, it's probably because you'd rather be more toned. For a few weeks, try changing nothing regarding your diet but doing some light cardio and weight training every day or every other day â?? if you notice an improvement after a couple of weeks, then that's probably what your negative feelings about your weight actually reflected.

But I have a close friend who is 5'10 and 151 pounds and she could be on the cover of Vogue tomorrow, I promise you. I really don't think you need to worry too much about your weight â?? to feel happier with yourself, as I said, I'd suggest working to tone up a little. :)

Congratulations on the big weight loss!

My favourite snack is a cup of strawberries with a 60-calorie block of dark chocolate melted to dip them in. I also like chocolate and Cracker Jack-flavour rice cakes.

Campbell's Gardennay Summer Asparagus and Sweet Basil Soup (80 calories per cup) and many of the other flavours (like Butternut Squash, yumm) are very good also.
