Weight Loss "Diet" vs "Lifestyle?" Mar 15 2007

A diet is something you do for a period of time.

A lifestyle change are changes you do for yourself that you can live with forever.

Just remember this is for life... No one wants to be healthy for a period of time.  They want to be healty forever......

Best of luck,

Roy

I have found that weighing everyday is OK if you weigh the same time each day.  I usually shoot for first thing in the morning after all bodly functions are complete.

Weighing at different times throughout the day will show various weights (as much as 3 to 5 lbs) just something to take into consideration.  Hang in there, you can do this thing.

Tea for me.

My pantry looks like a gormet tea shop.  I only have 20 varities on hand.  I have found that it keeps me going all day and it seems to surpress my appetite.

Some say that the green teas have health benefits.  I don't care I just love my teas.  The majority of my teas are Decaf.

Foods Misperceived foods appear to be good, but are actually bad? Mar 13 2007

Portion Control is the key.  It is hard to stay focused if we eliminate everything we like or have been used to eating our entire life.

I would rather eat les of something I love than eat none of it at all.  This is an example where less can mean more benefit wise.

To all the newcomers welcome.  Tomorrow will be my second month on CC and 35 lbs GONE.

I to had approx 90 lbs to loose so I can relate.  I am no expert by any means but I have lost hundreds of pounds throughout my life only to gain them all back plus some.  It is different now.

This is what is working for me.  Log everything that passes your lips.  Do a little walking everyday, and use the journal.  thats right make a journal entry everyday.  Make note of your feelings, accomplishments, and setbacks.  It is motivating to go back and review and it can give you info as to what your doing wrong in case of those times one will gain weight or not loose any at all.  The journal is a great place for your CC friends to give you that much needed encouragment now and then.

I weigh myself everyday. I know a lot of people do not.  I just like the data points.  The more info you input the more accurate.  Plus I love to see my weight dropping on the chart.  Sure you will have daily ups and downs but you can review your food logs and see what is going on.  i.e. salt intake, high carbs, etc.

Last but not least set weekly and monthly goals.  Do not always look at the long term but keep it in your mind.  Reward yourself when you make your short term goals.  Remember one step at a time.  We all gained our weight over a long time and we cannot expect to loose it quick.

Fact:

  • We have to use more than we take in.
  • We have to really want to make it happen
  • We have to get out of the Diet mode and get into a Lifestyle Change Mode.  This is a lifestyle change not a diet
  • We have to eat at least 1500 cals for men and 1200 cals for women daily
  • Drink plenty of water
  • Exercise now and then if only walking the dog.  Just do something
If you need a buddy to help you along drop me a line.  Together we can make this happen.

Good Luck.

Thanks to everyone for their input.  this is great.  I hope others will add their comments.

I have added a couple of changes as well after reading everyones post.

  • started to do some light weight lifting
  • Mixing up my exercise routine
  • Increased the amount of water I drink
  • Got my wife on the program so now I have in house support.
A quick note on keeping a journal/food log and weighing daily:

Weighing daily and keeping a good journal allows me to look back and see what happened on those days my weight goes up.  My weight loss chart shows a few spikes upward.  Looking back at my journal the day before the spike, my journal shows  everytime I had increased salt intake, ate big, or did no exercise.  This tells me it was probably water weight gain so no need to get discouraged.

Wow, there are some great routines on this thread.

I do need some advice.  I have been advised by my doc not to do weight training due to my weak heart.  How in the world can I tone up all the flabby skin that is starting to develope around my arms and gut?

What works for you?

No need to get depressed.  Did you take any measurments of yourself before you started you lifestyle change?  If you did go ahead and break out the tapemeasure again.  With all the working out you have been doing I would venture to bet you have lost quite a few inches.  You are probably building muscle mass as well.  Remember that muscle weighs more than fat.  The good thing about the extra muscle mass helps burn calories.

Stay focused on your long term goal.  You did not gain your excess weight over night or even in a couple of months.  It will not vanish in a month or two as well.

Your doing great and congrats. on making a commitment to exercise and eating healthy.  You will be glad you did.  Soon you will start to see big differences in your appearance.  You will gain more energy than you ever thought possible.  You general health will improve.  The most important thing is you are doing this for yourself.

Hang in there and good luck.

Allergy Remedies
Is It Possible to Go Natural?
The side effects of allergy medications keep some people from using them. Natural remedies can be a great alternative, but some are more effective than others.
