42.91 calories!  ;)

Anyway, simple proportions:  (0.67 cup / 230 calories) = (0.125 cup / x calories)

Cross multiply and solve for x:  0.67x = 28.75... So, x = 42.91

Fitness Blac/Purple toenails... freaking the flock out... Jul 06 2008

Yuppppppp happens to me from running.  About 4-5 months ago, one of my toenails turned completely black/blue, and was sort of..lifted?  About a month later, because it was somehow raised up, I was able to use the little file thing on toenail clippers, and gouge it all out (it's all dried blood).  Yeah, I know, disgusting... but it made it not black anymore!  The remaining nail was fine, albeit only connected at the bottom, and didn't hurt or anything.  Then, a couple of weeks ago, it finally fell off.  :-P  So now I have a lovely tiny little stump of a new toenail growing in.  I have another one on my other foot, but I'm just letting it be for now.

Usually, it's caused by the impact of your toe against your shoe.  Just make sure to keep your toenails really trimmed!  Although they might not be long enough to actually FEEL the fact that the nail/shoe is touching, running seems to cause it to happen.

pasha12 - That makes total sense-- and yeah, it's my left leg.  Of course, it's now been nearly 2 weeks, I havent run at all, and have gone to the gym...twice, I think?  Once using the elliptical, and once just doing the rowing machine and stationary bike, so that it wouldn't hurt my hip.  I'd certainly call that "reducing mileage substantially"!  I definately can't run, though, even after I've "warmed up" enough to walk.  :-\

Anyway, I'm also thinking it may be a nerve thing.  It seems like now, when I stand up, I have to sort of stretch it out, and the top part of my leg will inevitably seize up, berfore I can gingerly put some weight on it.  Only after all that can I actually walk regularly!  This is getting pretty ridiculous, and I'm sort of worried that it hasn't exactly gotten any better after so long-- and after sooo long of no working out!  I'm one of those people that can't stand taking a day off, and I dread my rest days more than anything.  But now, like I said, it's been 2 weeks and I've gone twice (although I'm about to go later today... kayaking machine, here I come!).  I feel like I'm going to turn into a blob of jell-o, and my leg muscles are going to completely atrophy.  Sigh.  I might have to give in and go to the doctor, soon.  :(

tracy_rishor - oh man... just looking up Legg Perthes makes it look scary!  But it looks like it's normally diagnosed in early childhood (5 - 12 years old?), and it's more common in males.  But hey, I'll keep reading up on it.  Thanks for the suggestion!

joyfulake - I do stretch, although I don't know how "thoroughly."  Starting a few months ago, I definately started stretch more, though; I used to NEVER stretch, but after the first few bouts of pain, I learned my lesson!  I stretched yesterday and it may have temporarily made it a little better, but it also hurts to stretch; couldn't even do some of my normal stretches.  As far as the father... he's a crazy man.  His opinion is that I should stay home and eat more and gain weight instead of going to the gym.  And for some reason, running itself has always been even more of a "running is too much!  too hard!" sort of thing.  I don't know.  Of course, if it gets bad enough, I don't care, I'll go to the doctor... I'd just rather not, that's all.  ;)

no_audience - I can only assume it's some sort of overuse issue, but really?!  I never run two days in a row.  Maybe I'll run one day then do the elliptical the next, and so on.. but never twice in a row, and I usually have an off day every third or 4th day.  So I don't feel like it should be overused, you know?  I'll try the pillow thing, though, that sounds like it would help, actually.  Thanks for the tip!

heatherlanders - I got really great shoes a few months ago after having knee problems, and that pretty much sorted it out.  They're now about...4.5 months old?  I figure they have some time left in them...  :-\  I also THINK I have pretty good running form, but even if I don't, it's not like anything has changed; I'm running exactly the same as always.  Hmm.  I'd love to try yoga sometime, and I've been meaning to look into classes, so maybe now is a good time.

joyfulake - yikes!!  That sounds terrible!  :-\  I suppose a doctor would be good, but I'd really rather wait until I'm back at school (and don't have to pay anything, and also don't have to let my dad know... he's super paranoid about me running, and knowing him, he'd put me on bedrest or something if he found out I hurt enough to go to the doctor.  And yes, I am 20 years old; yes, my dad is that controlling when I'm at home.  ug!)  If it still hurts mid/late august when I'm back at school, I'll FOR SURE check it out, but since most of my other injuries sort of took care of themselves (although I did go to a sports doctor twice, I think... didn't really help, just said I had to wait it out), I'm somewhat weary.  I'm sorry about your deal, though!  Geez.  What a pain!  In more ways than one...

Thanks for all the ideas/suggestions/information, guys!

Reading the site, I totally agree with Melkor-- it looks like a load of crap.

HOWEVER!

My mom knows someone who sells it (or something), and they finally got her to try it.  So we bought some.  IT IS AMAZING!!  Seriously, I was the biggest skeptic EVER, but the whole flexibility thing is so true.  Try reaching over and touching your toes.  Stand with your feet together, arms straight out, and twist around as far as you can.  Then drink like 2 oz of that water, and try both things again.  Holy crap, I was practicly twisted aroudn 180 degrees, and there is no way a placebo could be THAT effective.

I'm a scientist, so naturally, I wanted to explanation.  Of course, I'm a physicist, and on principal, I naturally hate chemistry.  So, i never really figured it out.  All I know is that it's really amazing water!  haha.  :)

(but yes...VERY expensive.)

Yeah, maybe that's why there wasn't tons of information online about grilling them.  I guess they just take a lot longer to cook, haha!

Anyway, thanks guys!  I guess I'll just "finish" cooking the other half either in the microwave or steaming.  Thanks for the info!

Weight Loss Why do I weigh more in the morning? Jun 16 2008

That happens to me, sometimes.  Some days when I wake up and am still tired/etc, I just FEEL really..heavy.  And I'll weigh myself, wait like an hour and a half, weigh myself again...and I'll be a good pound/pound and a half less!  I find when I'm most rested/awake, THEN that first weight is the lowest.  So I'm not entirely sure about the reasoning, but something about really being settled/digested sounds about right...

Yup.

I'm 5'4", and used to weigh something like 180(+??) pounds.  Now, I weigh like 109 pounds.  I don't really remember if it ever happened before, but it does now.  Not all the time, but enough that I consider it something that "happens to me."

My mom is the same.  She's my height, and like 135 lbs.  We usually attribute it to having low blood pressure.  I personally also have a really low resting heart rate, I don't know if that has something to do with it.

How frequent is it?  A couple of weeks ago it kept on happening, multiple times a day, for a few days in a row.  But then I'll go months without it happening.  I dunno...

Fitness Do you eat before you run? Jun 13 2008

I definately eat!  In fact, I find I run the best if I'm slightly "full."  Oatmeal with some mixed in berries or other fruit is what does it for me.  :)  Occasionally, if I work out later in the day, I'll make sure to eat something else right before... but the oatmeal just sits better for me.  I tried a boca burger + veggies once (a typical dinner for me, so nothing "weird"), and I felt TERRIBLE while running.  So clearly, you might have to try a few things until you find that perfect meal for you.  Good luck!

Thanks guys!

I'm definately already looking forward to more...  My mom ran with me (I made her start running, too...  I was away at school and she was at home, so it was cool to sort of have this thing we were both doing "together") and she's just glad it's over, whereas I'm all for more!  Except my foot is now in considerable pain, but, whatever... ;)  I'm tryinig to find a half-marathon sometime in a couple of months or so, before I go back to school.  I definately know I could go further!

dc_runner81 - I will definately take you up on that!  I'd love to increase speed..!

Oh man, that sucks. Is there any way to see another doctor (or hospital) sooner?! Because you shouldn't have to live like that!

I don't know how exact your symptoms match, but one of my best friends has Chron's, and I know some of it sounds familiar... :-\ Have you looked into that, at all?? I don't know what else to tell ya, sorry! Good luck figuring it out, and getting out of pain!!

Haha, that's funny.. the two posters above me mentioned smart dogs, and boca burgers-- and I've had one of each, today!

Smart dogs are awesome chopped up and thrown into a frying pan.  Heats 'em up, slightly crispier...and put them in whatever.  Salad, lettuce, veggie mixes, sandwhiches, anything!  Boca burgers I eat a LOT for dinner.... I make a big serving of some sort of vegetable, then heat up a boca burger, cut it into bite size pieces, and mix it all together.  Super original, I know...but delicious!  And you can't beat that protein!  I love the taste of both.  :)

Gardenburgers are also really good.  I love the californian veggie medley one, I think it is.... has corn, and all sorts of other good stuff.  :)  yum!
