Great response, Highviscosity.  Further, I think it behooves us to try be good examples for those posters and responders for whom English is a second language and may be trying to learn English.  It's got to be very confusing to see the way the language is sometimes butchered here.

My mom doesn't know English and neither did a majority of the adults who assisted in raising me so even though I took school seriously I still sounded dumb when I wrote stuff becuase of that. Foreign grammar differs so much from English. Keep that in mind, you don't know the person on the other side of the screen. I have been mocked in person and online due to my grammar mistakes and mispelling. I also can't pronounce things correctly sometimes. So think before you call out people on such things (not saying you would call out a specific person but lot's of people might be discouraged by this topic and feel less welcomed becuase they don't want to seem stupid and unwanted).

And yeah, I probably made many mistakes in my above paragraph so I apoligize for pissing people off accidently.

Frankly, soupcanx, I think you expressed yourself very well, and any misspellings could be averted by using the Spell Check feature.

As far as being offended, there have been many inane or vulgar posts and responses, particularly in The Lounge, that have offended me, so I pretty much avoid The Lounge.  I just think people who can't express themselves without becoming vulgar are pathetic, and it definitely wouldn't discourage me and cause me to leave the website.

Again, in my opinion, you did a great job, much better than I lot of what I've read in some of the forums.

Today I sent an email to my children; when one of them replied, I noticed that I had written "I new you would no the answer."  Are you kidding me?!  I actually used "new" for knew and "no" for know.  That just really struck me as ironic, since I have been posting on (and reading all the posts on) this thread.

My opinion is that we have to be careful of being too critical of people who are posting casual messages, because it is just too easy to find other people's mistakes and miss our own.

But I also agree that we seem, collectively as a nation, to be getting lazier and lazier in terms of our command of the language.

Very well said, Pilgrimdude.  But, isn't it cool that your children knew the difference!  I think that's really neat.  Laughing  We ALL get in a hurry sometimes.

I agree wholeheartedly, Susiecue.  I also have a feeling most errors are NOT being made by those for whom English is a second language, though I agree some are.  And, I do have to disagree with those who think it's not important to use proper grammar and spelling on the Internet.  Why would someone want to sound any less intelligent here than he/she would elsewhere?

For those who are bored with this subject, perhaps do what I do for topics that do not interest me.  Ignore the post and responses and move on to another forum subject.

Have you ever thought of how many people here are bilingual and English is their second or third language?

I know my English isn't perfect - but I know a second and even a third language - fluent!

Please don't judge people because of their grammar or typos!

You are, of course, absolutely entitled to your opinion.

Total weight loss:  3 whole pounds..and I am supposed to be pleased with this even though it's nowhere near what I'd set my goal at, so woo-hoo...actually So disappointed in myself! But a new month is coming and I will see better results in September! Goodbye August!

Okay, Jill, you didn't make your goal this month, but you DID lose THREE pounds.  Next time you're in the grocery store, look at what three pounds of ground beef, or three pounds of ANYTHING, looks like.  THAT'S what you lost this past month, and you're three whole pounds closer to your goal.  Please don't get down on yourself; you still did good!!  And, like you said, a new month is coming.

Congratulations to those of you who are that close to your final goal!!  I still have a long way to go, but between now and Christmas Day I hope to have lost another 25 (maybe 30) pounds.  My actual Christmas Day goal is to be able to resist all the goodies I know my sister will have for our family get together.  I'll probably take my own food.  My family is very supportive and understands my desire to not back slide, so they won't be insulted.  Only thing is, she makes the BEST eggnog in the world.  It's so foamy and frothy.  We'll see if I can resist it.  Smile

Just a thought, Tessa, but it might be fun to check again after Christmas to see if we were successful.  LOL

I never have, either, Raerae.  LOL I guess his response just struck me wrong.  HOWEVER, I kind of regret doing it.  I don't usually answer sarcasm with sarcasm.  Just creates animosity, and I HATE confrontations.

Please accept my apology for my response, ResOkkw.  I should have just let it drop.

I think you meant to say, "It's just as annoying being corrected all the time, too.  These are forums, not English class.

Sorry, I couldn't resist.  Further, you're absolutely right, resOkkw.  If you don't care how you come across, then why should I??  Absolutely none of my business.  However, I have never before corrected anyone's grammar or spelling.  I was merely responding to a post with which I happened to agree.  I'm entitled to my opinion, just as you're entitled to yours, right?  Now you have a terrific week!  Hope it's not as hot where you are as it is in Southern California.

No matter how careful we are, most of us make those types of errors.  Yes, almost all of us do make them assuming that we post very much.  Also, a lot of us before we post either are too lazy to use the "Spell Check," or forget to.

Some people might suggest that when posting in forums like this one, it is not significant that they make a few errors in usage, spelling, mechanics, etc.

And many studies have shown that despite what students are taught in school about proper use of formal language writing conventions, the most dominant influences on students are  their home environment and peers.  It makes little difference how many times a student is taught proper language mechanics if when he/she goes home, siblings and parents follow very few of those conventions, or if their friends butcher the language.

These are some common words I have often noticed misused from time to time (and I misuse some of these occasionally, too):

  • their--they're--there
  • to--too
  • than--then
  • affect--effect
  • lead--led
  • you're--your
  • it's--its

I totally agree with you, Pilgrimdude, that everyone (INCLUDING me Laughing) makes the occasional error.  No one is perfect.  I guess I'm talking about the posts and responses that have numerous or repetitive errors.  Don't ask me why it bugs me so much, because I'd be hard pressed to explain it.  Thank you for your polite response.  I'll  take it to heart and TRY to overlook these things.

I'm still chuckling over your last sentence, Kay.  You're absolutely right that it looks unprofessional!!  You don't have to be a college graduate to use good grammar or to spell correctly.  Just no excuse for it.  Another one is people who say don't instead of doesn't.  Where do they learn these things????

I agree, kathiemfb.  I discovered the Sara Lee 45-calorie breads a couple of months ago.  I can actually eat sandwiches, again!  I use the white, the whole wheat and the multi-grain, depending on what kind of sandwich I'm having.  What a calorie saver!!

No, raerae, I don't think it's excessively bitchy.  I agree with you.  One of my pet peeves is when someone starts a sentence with "So." Such bad grammar.  It also annoys me when someone types "i" instead of "I."    I often wonder what people are being taught in school.  It's not just teenagers, either.  Adults  in their 30s and 40s are just as guilty.  I'm sorry, but bad grammar, misspellings and lack of proper capitalization annoy the heck out of me.  Undecided

Rarely am I unable to find the food I'm looking for in the CC data base.  I just looked up chicken legs and there were numerous entries; same thing with thighs, breasts, etc.  I'm a little confused as to why you're unable to find the foods you're looking for.  Maybe I'm just not understanding your question.
