Fitness Avoiding food after workout to burn more fat/Shaping Dec 10 2008

I am not sure for general workouts, but for running, I am SURE you are suppose to eat at least about1 hours after the work out. Why? Because food with carbohydrates replenishes the glycogen stored in the muscles fastest right after a work out, so you get your energy back quicker. Eating things with protein will help your muscle from being hurt. Long exercises burns muscle and fat, so to keep your muscle you SHOULD eat things with protein afterward. Scientifically, you know really how much calories you eat is how many calories you eat. when you eat them should not make a too big of a difference let me link you with some website: http://www.runnersworld.com/article/0,7120,s6-242-301--12904-0,00.h tml

milk! I've thrown up after PE classes because of milk i drank like 3 hours before class.

I am okay with water and all. I normally eat like a banana or a bit of carbs. Something that will fill my stomach a lil and give me energy.

Foods Protein sources Dec 06 2008

If you eat a whole breast of Chicken (about 2 servings of meat)

that is about 55 grams of protein ,284 calories and total of 6 grams of fat. 6 grams of fat for almost 60 grams of protein is probably close to as low as it is going to go, since even tofu has more fat than that.

Fitness Running? Jogging? Dec 06 2008

First thing, running  burns a lot more calories than doing sit ups push ups etc. and since most people can run longer than they can do sit ups etc. they'll end up burning more calories overall.

However, things like sit ups and push ups also help build muscle, which can help with increasing your metabolism.

But if weight loss is your goal , then running would be a great choice. You can add in a few sets of situps, pushups, jumping rope, doing squats, jumping jacks a few times a week if you want, but you should spend more time on running.

Weight Loss Kind of Starving Dec 06 2008

I am eating about 1200 cal/day and not really feeling hungry. Eating solid food for breakfast and lunch really helps!  I mean 1 can of slim fast is 190 calories! that's a lot for something that is liquid. for 190 calories I can eat 2 slices of whole grain wheat bread(60 cal /slice) AND a whole ounce of 1/3 reduced fat cream cheese (taste like the real thing and is only 70 cal/oz or about 2 tablespoons)! with 190 you can also eat 1/2 cup of oatmeal (about 1.5 cups cooked) + some frozen fruit. Other filling choices such as cereal and yogurt.

for the above  you don't really need to be able to cook.

lunch you can easily do sandwiches if you don't really want to look. again for about 190 calories, you can have lettuce wraps(saves some calories from carbs) that have deli meat (ham turkey etc. just buy the low fat ones) and some cheese if you want. wrap in some fresh romaine. YUM! then eat up lots of fruits.

in the afternoon, i normally have a snack 100 cal - 200 cal snack

I think simply just switching from slim fast shakes to healthy solid food choices would help a lot.

I eat about 1200cal/day , but  I cook for myself, so i normally have some starch (rice , pasta) every meal + veggies! and a bit for meat for lunch and dinner. You can do a lot of 1200 calories if you eat the right food.

That sounds fantastic! Good job. Your hard work  has paid off with amazing results.

Back when I was in high school, we always had timed runs and fitness tests. I never got around to improving my fitness level.

Do you mind sharing what are some exercises you did or how you trained? how long it took you to get that sort of improvements ? (so others like me can get motivated too)

Depends on the size of the cookie.

Baking cookie isn't very hard. You can make whole grain and nearly fat free cookies at home! just replace whatever oil or butter with applesauce!

Weight Loss Skipping Breakfast Dec 04 2008

During first 2 years of high school I had PE first thing in the morning, so I couldn't really eat breakfast since we do a bit of vigorous running etc. Sure, I didn't get very hungry even till 1pm ish. But now I realize that eating breakfast is just important in so many ways. I eat breakfast every morning now.

But keep in mind breakfast help jump start your metabolism in the morning. If you don't eat breakfast, your body is still in somewhat of a rest mode(like when you are asleep, you don't really go hungry) which doesn't burn as much calories as if you did eat breakfast.  Even if you make up the calories later on , you still lost the time in the morning that your body COULD have been burning more calories.

personally, I rather eat breakfast, and have to suffer a little bit before lunch time, than making up calories later.

I am a college student right now, and I can say that cooking at home is DEFINITELY cheaper than eating anywhere else.

I currently only spend about $5 a day on food. (Dinning plans are more like close to $10 a meal!!!)

Buy in bulk when you can, and freeze. cook in bulk when you can and also freeze.

Some farmer's market has good great fresh fruit and veggi (the one around me, with one dollar, you can get :

-2 package of blueberries or

-2 ripe mangoes or

-2 avocadoes or

-4 heads of romaine lettece or

-4 big bell peppers or

-4 bunch of scallions or

-6 onions or

-1 or more huge eggplants or

-1 big cabbage or

-4 big oranges or

-7 small oranges or

-2-3 pounds of banana or

-10 lemons or

 etc. you get the idea

get meat on sale in bulk! sometimes whole chicken breast meat is under $2 / pound!

1st: Please eat  more! I am only 5 ft and I eat more than that

2nd: different food makes you feel full differently: the weight/volume of the food, how easy it is to digest, fiber quantity, and how calories dense they are etc.

Weight Loss Bmi ... LOL Nov 29 2008

BMI can be grossly wrong for people not around the average height.

for really tall people, it will say they are over weight when they probably not

and for really short people, it will say they are underweight they are not.

there are some variabtion of BMI calcuators online that better compensate the different heights.

Foods whats up with GINSENG Nov 25 2008
01:51 (UTC)
1

Ginseng isn't very starchy at all so it shouldn't really be 400 calories

further more , eating it everyday is probably not good for you. (chinese medicine-wise, it is very warm, better for the winter). Cut into slices and make it into ginseng tea by boiling it in water to get all the medicinal properties out.

Foods sushi question - does anyone know? Nov 24 2008

sushi rice  volume cooked vs uncooked varies a lot!

I am asian, so I cook rice almost everyday.

1/3 raw rice(short or medium grain) is about 176 calories.

that cooked (steamed rice = rice + 1.5 to 2  times the water) is around half cup to one full cup.

1/3 raw rice is more than enough to make a full roll of sushi. So I would say the rice in the sushi is about 150-180 calorie

Weight Loss Im going to chinese food tonight and.. Nov 24 2008

Most of the fried stuffed you can find at chinese restaurants aren't really chinese. They have been americanized to fit american taste (characteristics like Mcdonales. KFC... lots of Fried stuff)

Real everyday chinese food has lots of steamed, stir fried (not much oil), roasted. Frying stuff is a horrible way to waste cooking oil. Our staple food is steamed rice (NOT fried rice) Although mostly carbs, it is much harder to be 300+ pounds eating rice and from fried food. Those considered "really obese" in China are probably 250 pounds ish.

Pretty much anything you eat is about portion control. keep to a plate and you should be fine.

If anything looks really greasy, pat dry with napkin.

Weight Loss How is this food plan? Nov 24 2008
05:27 (UTC)

Looks good!

carbs  and fiber from brown rice and oatmeal

protein from chicken and fish

healthy fats from fish

has veggies

might want to change popcorn to more fruits or dairy (stuff with calcium)

1300 is a bit low for 177.

I'd say start slower. Try 1500 first.

Make a few more menus with similar calories count so you can mix and match! your meals will be less dull that way.

Weight Loss Myth? Do muscles weigh more when they're warm? Nov 22 2008
23:55 (UTC)
1

No. if you are talking about weight before vs. after workout, the extra weight from measuring is probably because of the water you drink during workout.

a physical thing will have the same mass no matter at what temperature, it's density might change if it expands etc. but it should be the same.
