Thank you :) I am off to cycle for 10 mins tonight and see how I go.
I am on a course of diclofenac for swelling which happens from time to time. Had I started the course a month ago I would have fancied my chances in the gymnastics at the Olympics!

It sounds like you are close to your body's wished for weight. 1000 cals may be just too much of a deficit and you may need to drop to only 200, certainly for a while. Have you kept your exercise plan the same for the last few months? Mix it up a little as your body changes to accept exercise as normal, so you do not get the benefit you did at the start. Keep tabs on your BMI as it will determine if you can lose weight without becoming ill, tired etc... |

When you exercise your muscles move in ways they are not used to. In a natural way they tear a little to allow new muscle to form which allows you to be more efficient at the new task. Apart from teh weight of this new muscle, you also acquire water to aid the repair which adds to your weight. Think of those times you bang your head and you get a fluid sac to protect the damaged area. I am no expert, but if you are mixing exercise up your body is adjusting and will hold water until it knows what is going on and then shed it over a few weeks :) |

I left for a substantial time from CC as I found posters did not like the answer to their questions and would often pick and choose fellow ED posters to form groups about how wrong we all are! I guess if one person understands the message it is worthwhile, but getting there is hard work. Also weird that the OP raised the question after an almost identical thread from me. Maybe they are only jumpoing in, posting and referring to a small selection of comments rather than the community. |

| Weight Loss | I have a Dog (Monster), but Calorie Burning each Hour Problem | Oct 14 2011 11:29 (UTC) |

Thank you for the suggestion which was not requested within my post. This will be the fourth dog I have taken which is a rescue animal. I have had the dog a week and am currently the fourth owner, so she is very unsettled and no doubt expecting the worst. I know the previous owner left her at home for 10+ hours at a time, so getting out and seeing fields will be overly exciting. You have to let an unhappy dog settle and feel wanted before bringing in too harsh a training regime. As I say though, thank you for the suggestion without considering my background or experience. |

Thank you for the reply, but I am actually playing tug-of-war with a 39kg dog to prevent her jumping on people. This is a little different to the description above as walk/ run does nothing particularly for your shoulders, arms etc... The 300cals/ hour is the easy bit... The dog restraining is the hard bit which I am seeking assistance on as per the original post. Based on your comment; would I be right in saying that running on a treadmill at 3mph whilst lifting weights will burn just the same amount of calories as running on a treadmill at 3mph? *confused face* |

Thank you for the reply and to clarify I dropped the cheese out of my diet for meat products (not processed) and really my weight should be around 190-193lbs, but I am happier at 200-203lbs. Cheese is possibly my favourite food and would suffer to eat it. It is just the situation I am in that I do not have time to do the food shop and my partner is getting the food in. Maybe she is telling me something (?). Laughs. Many thanks and will put the cheese back in and see what my body does. This is the longest without it that I can remember. |

| Weight Loss | Really confused about how many calories I should be eating | Oct 11 2011 15:26 (UTC) |

You do not mention how your lifestyle has been over the years. I made the mistake of entering starvation mode some years ago which took 9 months to competely sort itself out. I did lose weight over this time after an initial weight gain whilst my body adjusted, so my only advice is to not panic should weight go on for a while, but definately take measurements such as waist and leg etc... They should drop regardless. |

loulou2008>> You must have read my mind. I was planning to update tonight..., so far she has lost 4 lbs. The weight is steady now, but a medication change seems to be retaining water. Lost an inch on the waist rather than weight, so improving slowly.
Based on experience it will be later thsi year that the metabolism is repaired fully to gain the benefits of the program. morrighu>> Thank you for your post, but using the tools on here which have helped me to successfully lost 28 lbs of fat in 2 years at sedentary the maintenance is 1900. Consume a max of 1500 cals? Trying to repair a metabolism at the moment, so a small deficit is the aim. I had thought the weight would increase, but after an initial jump it has disappeared. The foot choices of my mum are excellent, and far superior to mine. Just not enough food had been consumed, and that was the way forward. I would never touch weight watchers, especially when I know so many people that have had success from following the CC recommended program. To me weightwatchers is like employing an accountant to calculate your finances.... :) |

| Fitness | would you hire a quiet personal trainer? | Jul 01 2008 13:19 (UTC) |

As a quiet person and knowing my fair share of quiet people, we tend to be methodical in opur approach and take a genuine interest in learning to achieve better knowledge.
At a guess, if you ask a question your trainer is unsure of, he will research and read up to give you an answer when you next meet. Louder people will tend to waffle or make stuff up that sounds belieable. As a quiet person that seeks facts for an arguement I would stick with him if the above is right and you feel comfortable. |

Stenwa>> it's not about numbers all adding up to a precise amount at the end of the day.
It is if your deficit is constantly over 1000... Nail biting over numbers? It's just a case of grabbing a banana... The OP should be praised for looking to meet a safe target and after advice in achieving it. The OP is talking of eating too little in teh day, so am confused why you are talking about over-eating. |

skierdude>> You really shouldn't be logging in things like driving and taking kids places. Those are usually included in your sedentary activity (hence the reason why they added 300 extra calories).
Hmmm...., so my driving 5 hours a day should not be included? Using the sedentary thing for me personally is a pointless exercise. Best to add everything in from scratch for a true reflection. helpless>> how is it possible to gain when you have such a big deficit? i just don't get it. Your body through evolution has evolved to note that when you are not consuming enough calories in a period of time that there is a food shortage and makes your body hold onto all fat resources at the expense of keeping you from tiring. When you then eat a large meal, the body still thinks there is a food shortage and stores everything as fat whilst keeping you tired. Slowly you increase in weight whilst the body waits for the famine to end, adding everything you eat into fat stores. Think of it this way... You can't borrow money, but you want a holiday. You have no savings, but an income.... You believe the holiday is $500 and you have 10 weeks to save. Therefore you note you must save $50 a week. Through the ten weeks you give up a night out or clothes which makes you miserable, but come 10 weeks later you have $500. It is only then you find the holiday is actually $400, and you now have an excess $100 which you can lose. |

| Fitness | Why are there never any guys on the elliptical? | Jun 19 2008 13:07 (UTC) |

Maybe it's because I go to a university gym, and all the males there are so hyped up on themselves, but I have never seen a man under the age of 45 jump on the elliptical, and rarely on the step machines.
Why is it I do not see women squatting weights at my gym? I guess they are so ashamed that they struggle to lift the weight. Why can't the answer be that the guys are choosing a different exercise that performs the task of an eliptical and something else. |
