Fitness What (and when) to eat before/after cardio? Jul 02 2009

O.K I've been having a protein shake(Isagenix) after my workouts.  My only concern is that I go to bed very late, and so do my workouts very late usually 10pm, 11pm sometimes midnight.  I'm just not a morning person.  I go to bed around 2 or 3am.  Would having a shake this late prevent weight loss?  I just started to do the Shalean Extreme workout/strength training 3x week and 1xcardio.  Also, if I am over 1200 cals/day is it best to skip the shake after the workout and just wait till breakfast or have the shake and be over on my cals? I am considering not having the shake as I'm not seeing much movement in the scale.  How long does it take for the body to gain 1 lb of muscle?  Is it reasonable to expect results as early as 3 weeks?????  So many questions...

Thanks, I'm a bit lost as to what to do.

I think that if you go through your kitchen and do a makeover than that will support you the most. I know it's difficult but if it's there It's easier to eat it. Getting rid of all the junk, and replacing them with better choices.   I love chips, although I have been sooo good about not having them I found some that are made with brown rice and taste great, it's called Riceworks and my favorite one is the parmesean/sundried tomato they taste so like doritos.  Anyhow, I've replaced ice-cream with greek yogurt(strawberry).  I have 3 kids and my hubby ofcourse who loves sweet stuff so it is difficult at times to see them eat but I allow myself the yogurt/or make fruit smoothies.  Plus the ice-cream they have is the fudgesicles 100 cal(real ingredients nothing with fructose..etc) or the Breyers Vanilla which has real ingredietns nothing weird.

Good luck! Find the strengh in you to do it.  Stay busy, from now on I tell my kids and hubby ok guys dinner is over "kitchen is closed", before I used to be in there all the time and the more time I spent the more I'd want to munge on even if it was a little bites here and there it adds up.  I also heard this can't remember where, to eat at one place only all the time in other words, don't sit inside of the pantry and start snacking, or in the bedroom, or on your home office, make it the table.

Have you thought about buying a used treadmill.  I found a great one on Craigslist for $50.   Good source to purchase stuff. Plus, why spend big money on something you are not sure if it's going to work for you.  I too tend to get bored, but have found that I like DVDs, something about watching someone do it that helps me out, I love the options that beachbody.com has, I have used Turbo Jam, and now started the Chalean Extreme workout series.  Being that I'm a new member I've seen that you can log in your workout activities, and looking at the burn meter seems to remind me that I have to have an activity in.

Have you made gluten free bread?  And with the internet out there, I haven't checked yet, but is there a site you recommend for an Ezekiel type of bread?  I have buying a bit for myself, but would love to transition my whole family into it and make it at home, so it's more cost effective.  Can you share where you found your yogurt recipe as well?  Is there one for Greek Yogurt?  (I don't have a flour grinder, wonder if my vita-mix would do that I'm thinking yes).

Weight Loss Will drinking a ton of water really help with weight loss? Jun 19 2009

I too increased my water intake as well.  I know that with ice I had heard that it speeds up metabolism abit, since the body has to warm up the water.  In 2006 when I was religiously working out 6-7 days a week and watching my calories, I did drop from like 145 (after having a newborn) to 130 in sixty days.  I will continue with my water intake since water flushes the body out.  I'm drinking now at least 3 (24oz) water jug so I'm at 72 oz.  I think the more you drink the more your body will get use to it and you'll end up having to go the ladies room less.  Right now I'm at 139 (European cruise food fest didn't help) and my goal is 120lbs, which I've never gotten to since I've had 3 kids but I'm turning 30 this year so I'm a bit more motivated and really believe in doing weights, I just started the ChaLean Extreme DVD program.  (I love her, did her Turbo Jam).

I recently learned that the healthy items are around the perimeter of the store, all the packaged stuff is on the isles, so I'm doing my best to stay away from the isles.  Now I'm looking to replace the things I like with healthier choices, specially Cheese and buying lower grams per fat.  I must say I do tend to overbuy fruits/veggies, still working on this one.  In my family we have a "today" shelf and that's where I put things that have to be eaten before it goes bad, leftovers, it helps the kids too so they know where to grab stuff from.

I look at specials that Smiths sends out everyweek see whats on sale and go from there.  If there is something we eat alot of and it's on sale buy lots.  Like Classico sauces for pasta.  Pretty much the same as Spoiled_candy.  On the chicken I buy the chicken breast with skin/bone for like 99c lb and remove the skin, cook up the breast, and what's left the bones with some meat on it I use to make soup or shred the chicken.

Weight Loss Detoxification and Cleansing to Lose Weight Jun 17 2009

I've done cleanses before, did Isagenix for a while and did see results.  Went from 140 to 126lbs (did it for about 90days), however with their system as much as I love their shakes/meal replacements is it's pricy and there is one day a week you have to cleanse they have an aloe juice berry flavored which is very good compared to just aloe juice.  In their program you replace two meals with the shakes and have a good lunch/dinner of around 400-600 calories.  After a while of doing this, I just couldn't live that life. I like food! (the weekly cleanses were very helpful though, because it flushed out toxins and did experience headaches from it, that feeling after getting a massage.)  I've tried alot of things, did the Lemon & Maple syrup cleanse too, for 7 days and it was unbearable the first two days, after it got easier.  With this 7 day cleanse of not having food in my system I did not experience any weight loss.  Instead I really think it set me back, it slowed my metabolism down.  I would not recommend it. I finally feel that I'm back to normal.

Today, I would rather eat healthier foods without all the crap that they put in them, eat smaller meals (we are now using our salad plates instead), and work out more.  As my husband says to me all the time, "It's simple honey move more eat less".
