Fitness Mesomorphs - women who bulk up. Anyone in the same boat? Mar 22 2013

I wish I "bulked up" faster. :P I'm not really sure what I am -- definitely not an ectomorph, but maybe somewhere between an endomorph and a mesomorph. I've gotten some muscle from lifting, but not enough. Plus of course, whatever muscles I've managed to build are also buried under layers of fat, so it's kind of this struggle to find the right balance so I can both build/maintain muscle and lose fat.

jaimi: I never managed to properly figure out where to place the bar for front squats. I just did back squats instead. But good luck!

Today: One hour Zumba. Then one hour of "Definitions" class which seemed to mainly consist of donkey kicks, bicep curls, rows and triceps extensions with lots of reps with 4lb weights, and quite a bit of what I call Pilates-type ab moves which I was very bad at. Amazing how I can hold a 2-min plank and yet suck so much at various types of crunches. I don't think I'll be taking that class again. :P

dbacker: Love the hat/fascinator/whatever it's called!

Monday: no gym -- had to go to the vet as my cat is still sick.

Tuesday: NROLFA, Stage 1, WO B, Round 7. Hoping to finish round 8 this week so I can start Stage 2 next week!

Wednesday: Jogged 7km, yoga 20 mins.

I'm going to have to be diligent about working out for the rest of March so I can hit my goal. Also, my sister came back from vacation in San Francisco and brought back a bag of Ghirardelli dark chocolate, and the kind with sea-salt caramel keeps calling my name. :P

I have a feeling I'm not going to make my March goals. :P

Worked about 12 hours a day the week of March 4, and had to work through the weekend. Last week was spent doing post-mortem stuff on the events of the previous week, plus preparations for an event for 900 people.

March 13: NROLFA, Stage 1, WOA, Round 7. Had to cut down on the weights a little, and ended up doing seated rows instead of inverted rows because I was at the gym during peak hours.

March 14: A fairly intense Zumba class.

March 15: Active day -- drove about 5 hours to the event, walked/stood around (part of organizing committee) another 5-6 hours, and lugged around boxes of shirts, mugs, water bottles for part of that. Then of course, undid that calorie burn by drinking far too much that night. (I haven't that much alcohol in that short span of time in years.) :P

The next day was spent driving back home, resting a bit, then picking up my sister and her husband from the airport, and basically recovering from the previous night's indulgence. And today was spent getting a massage and a foot scrub.

Gym tomorrow.

March Goals:

  • Lift 2x a week; total of 14 workouts for the month
  • Do 20 consecutive pushups
  • Lose 3 lbs
  • Get back to being able to run 5K

Today, NROLFA WOB round 6. Went same/lighter as my previous WOB since I didn't lift for two weeks.

  • Elevated planks and side planks, 2 sets, 10 reps, 10 seconds
  • Single-leg RDL: 3x12, 30
  • One-arm DB press: 3x12, 17.5
  • OH Squat: 3x12, 40
  • Kneeling lat pull: 2x12, 60; 1x8, 75

15 mins jog/walk and 20 mins of hatha yoga.

I weighed in last week at 168.5, last Tuesday at 162, and today at 170.3. Obviously I couldn't have lost and gained 6.5-8 real lbs. Water weight is making my weight fluctuate like crazy.

dbacker: Congrats on the job! Hurray!

Finally went back to the gym today, just did a zumba class.

Looking back at my Feb goals:

  • Lose 2-3 lbs by the end of Feb.
    MET. Feb 2 weigh-in, 170 lbs; Feb 26 weigh-in: 163 lbs. (I didn't really lose 7 lbs. The Feb 2 weight was partly water weight, and I suspect I may have been a bit dehydrated on the 26th).
  • At least 12 workouts for the month.
    MET. 7 visits to the gym, 5 home workouts. But can/should do better.
  • Finish NROLFA Stage 1.
    FAIL. Only managed to get to Round 6, planning on doing 8 rounds.
  • Be able to do 20 consecutive pushups.
    FAIL. Tried this earlier, only managed to get to 15. I think I could've eked out one or two more, but definitely not five more.

I was sick last week from Thurs onwards, so I didn't work out, plus since I was sick, I ended up eating all sorts of food (not all bad food, but just a lot of food). I think when I'm sick or stressed, the energy I use for willpower gets diverted to getting better/dealing with whatever's causing the stress, and I end up gorging. So I had ice cream every single day from Thu till Mon (to soothe my throat). I went to an event Sat night and brought home lots of leftovers, so was eating something like 2500 cals Sat till Mon.

So Tues, I thought, okay -- not sick anymore, time to get back on track. I was internally cringing as I stepped onto the scale, since I' was pretty sure I'd gained (at the very least, water weight).

Instead, the scale said I'd lost 5lbs.

I have absolutely given up trying to understand how weight loss works. :P

I got sick (tonsils the size of pingpong balls! and streaky! really disgusting!) so no gym. I ate very little the first day of being sick but have been pigging out lately and being a blob. Not helping that I've been eating ice cream to kind of numb my throat.

Still stuck at 168.5.

Sick since Wed. Tonsils are... I will refrain from describing them in detail, let's just say that they are very inflamed. Been eating ice cream (as recommended by doctor!) to numb them and on high doses of antibiotics. Oddly enough, no fever, but haven't worked out because I feel that the panting and gasping will dry out my throat and make it worse, but I'm going to try for a very light workout tomorrow.

Guess I'll be buying more towels then. Wow, his alligator drag is fast... an alligator in attack mode. I have a feeling mine is going to look more like either a really stuffed gator, or a limping, injured one. :D

The gym I go to has a space with wooden floors where the group classes are held. I'm planning to do the sliding stuff there -- do Valslides work on wooden floors? I had this notion that it was for carpeted areas.

karozel - I get enormous satisfaction when I'm at the grocery or at the pet food store, and they bag my stuff and ask if I need help carrying it to my car, and I'm all, "Oh, it's no problem," and easily lift the bags. I know 2-3 years ago, walking to the car with cans and cans of cat food was a challenge for me, and now I don't even think about it.

dbacker - I was thinking the regular back squats and DLs. I'm still on Stage 1, so I haven't gotten to the DB chest press on partial bench part. I honestly think these non-usual squats/DLs/presses will help with the conventional lifts, I just don't have a way to measure it since I'm not doing them at the moment.
