In my perfect world, people wouldn't care that I don't eat meat anymore than I care that they do. I don't ask people to defend why they eat meat because it's none of my business. I myself have a moral dilemma with eating meat, but why should I have to defend my ethics to people who do not feel the same way? My moral compass is not universal.

Based on your story, I don't see how she DOES care that you eat meat. I'm not trying to bully you, but it seems to be that you are the one that is turning this into a you vs them scenario.

^If that were the case, I would be very lonely, indeed. I am not better than the next person (meat eater or not) in any way, shape or form. I'm just finding my own spiritual path and this an important part of my journey. Again, I'm keeping mum at work and only answer questions when asked. I've not whispered anything since this incident and don't plan to. If I have something to say at work I plan to say it tactfully and out loud, but only if asked.

I feel you. I eat meat, but try to do so rarely -- I never cook it myself-- and my wonderful dad, who is generally an awesome human being, cannot shut up about it. Some people are just so freaking threatened by the slightest whiff of vegetarianism.

I think vegetarians need to strike a balance between "this is the right choice for me" and the very real ethical and practical concerns they have about eating meat in the context of our food industry. Harvesting animals is messed up, and has enormous, measurable impact upon the our health, the planet's health, and the health of animals. That's a valid concern that vegans and vegetarians bring to the table, and even as an omnivore, I respect it and try to incorporate it into my lifestyle. Don't be sanctimonious; come up with good, persuasive arguments beyond "killing animals is wrong"; but don't apologize for your moral stance, either. They're uncomfortable because they know there's something to it. IMHO, anyway, and I am hardly perfect about my meat-eating habits.

I try not to tell people I am a vegan or a vegetarian anymore. I have only been eating this way for about 2 years and for now it is how I choose to live.  It is very hard to explain to someone that I feel better about myself by NOT killing animals for my own enjoyment and not contributing to a business that is destroying our beautiful planet for monetary gain, without sounding like I think I am better then they are because they DO those things. That is not very nice so I just keep it to myself. Now I just say that I don't eat "beef" or "chicken" or "fish" or "whatever it is being offered" that I don't eat... It is just easier and much more peaceful.

Once I was aware of where the food was coming from and what it went through to get to me... I chose not to be a consumer of something I was against. I would like everyone to educate themselves about where the food comes from and how bad things really are and then help put a stop to it by refusing to consume those things. Of course I hope EVERYONE will see things my way and help put a stop to all the killing and abuse and greed, of course I want that and when asked I will go on and on and on about it... But for the most part I just keep it to myself.

oh and btw...

I did not eat it but I did cook a turkey on Thanksgiving for my sons who know exactly where that bird came from and were more than happy to eat it!!! Laughing

I feel sorry for the poor turkeys too. I think about how many homes will be roasting at least one turkey on the holidays and it makes me shiver. To think about the conditions they were raised, the quantity of birds being crammed in, slaughtered together... it is sad and I feel sorry for those poor little turkeys too.

Frown poor turkeys.

  1. introduce yourself - hi guys... my name is roxie I am 43, single mom of 2 grown up boys (men?) and a puppy (4 year old pitbull who is the sweetest dog in the whole wide world) named miss piggy. Now that my youngest is 18 I am trying to start my life over... For ME this time and I am having a really hard time doing it, it is hard to focus (positively) on yourself when you are so use to focusing and doing for everyone else. This is not my first S&L I have been here since the second round. There was a time when I was doing really very well and there was no problems sticking to my challenges. Now it seems I have lost my way a little and I flounder back and forth. Some days are good some are bad... But I am still here and I am stepping up to the plate once again.
  2. take your measurements -I don't wanna... but I will.
  3. make some friends - I journal everyday... I think that is what keeps me here. I have made some wonderful friends with S&L and I hope to make a few more.

TOTM hit, I missed a few days of exercise, I had a few extra treats, and didn't count for 3 out of the 7 days but I feel like for the most part I ate under my 1500 calories. I am weighing myself once a week instead of everyday and I am not letting the scale dictate how I did. I lost a pound but I give myself a C- for the week. I could have done better and I should have kept logging. My goal is to LOG for the rest of this 10 weeks. I am also behind on my miles...

Here's to making this week better than last week.

Hey everyone, I'm Tasha I'm 20 years old and am a student at university. I'm in my 3rd and final year and cannot wait to graduate!

I started dieting in April 2009 and my start weight was 196lbs. I then joined Calorie Count in May 2009 at 185lbs. I've been counting calories, drinking lots of water and exercising ever since and now weigh 139lbs. I am 5'4" and my goal weight is 130lbs.

Not sure what my current measurements are and my tape-measure is at my house at uni! I'll take them when I get back in a week's time though.

Good luck to you all! xxxx

I always knew you were doing so great but I never realized just how much you have lost! I just assumed you were always this itty bitty! You are doing so good and are one of my greatest inspirations here on CC. I have no doubt you will make it to your goal.

Lily- I also changed my profile to give myself a clean slate.  All to often I would look at what I had lost and forget about what I still wanted to lose.  Starting fresh means making new stories and having new successes - we can do it!!

I need to do that too! You girls inspire me so much!!! Thanks, Mrscorbett reading this made me excited to have NEW success stories too. I feel so much better about things and this group has so much to do with that!

Thank you for the UPlifting post!

This weekend it is time to do some serious updating... Smile

WEEK 10: How are you doing?

You were not exaggerating when you said the past few weeks have been tough. I am uncomfortable in my own (fat) skin and if it was not for you fellow schmoozers I would probably be giving up and on my way back to 230+ pounds. It is devastating to see that all of that hard work and motivation can just go out the window with a snap of the finger (ok so it is a little more than a snap of a finger but why rehash what got me back to this sorry state).

How am I doing right now? Better. I feel like there is power in numbers and I don't feel alone. I feel strong as I have ever been and ready to do this! I am grateful that I have lilygirl, and sunshine, and crazypotato, and tawnspeck, and laurakelly and the rest of you who have maybe stumbled a little bit but are too strong to just give up.

I am doing okay. Wink

Actually I am pretty sure that I did eat enough calories to gain that much...and I can't seem to stop myself!

i have no clue what you ate and so can not argue that point. what have you done in the past to "stop" yourself? you've been successful before, see if you can get back into that mindset.

Lily... I challenge you to go back and RE-READ all of your journal posts. Read your own success story and all the replies from people. Then close your eyes and go back to that place in the Dr's office. I have had WAAAY too many holiday treats too but the fact that we are still here says something, right?

You motivate so many of us and we need you... Hopefully you can find something here that can re-motivate you!!!

hugs girlfriend... you can do this! I believe in you!!! Smile

*Ahem* calling Lily *ahem* Challenge...

Mrscorbett, you just keep on truckin'. My sis knows how you feel, that's why she answered your post.

And...if anyone else is interested, how about the dance of a decade for a challenge? Angel_fish busted through the 220's and weighed in at 218, which calls for a decade song of some kind. Maybe...something from the teens? How about this: http://www.trachtman.org/MIDI/Joplin/reflectn .mid

It's from 1917.  That's close enough!

You must dance about your living room or kitchen while celebrating your weight loss to this song -- or something else of your choice.

I'd do the dance of the decade, but I'm still too sick to dance. I just want to nap.

almost forgot....

I just did a hop-skip-ballerina dance to your song!!! Laughing GOOD STUFF!!!
