Mother's Day is over but here is my two cents anyways... My husband was gone all week on business! My week sucked (I don't know how single moms do it). My 4 year old was sick and went 3 nights without sleeping, I was sick and tired (but had to work anyways because I am a nurse and there was no coverage). He came home Friday night, Saturday I rallied and we took my mom to dinner. Yesterday he took our 4 year old to his mother's house (2 hours away) for dinner. I stayed home and slept all day. Was it a good mother's day? Not really, but I'll get over it. Mother's Day is really more for adult children to give thanks to their moms because they are old enough to appreciate their mothers. My husband does a good enough job of letting me know he appreciates me as a mother and one day my daughter will too. Sorry I am not too sympathetic, but Mothers Day, Fathers Day, V-day and all those other made up holidays are just big let-downs in general! |

Cashews! When I was pregnant, the office had a large Costco size container of salted cashews. I think I probably ate at least half of them in a couple of weeks. Maybe less. |

Binging on occasion is normal. I could/have on occasion had a whole box of granola, a whole pint of Ben and Jerrys, even a whole pound of chocolate. I am normal weight. Like the others have said, moderation on the exercise and make sure you are eating enough healthy, whole foods. I don't binge when I am filling my body up with whole, unprocessed, fruits, grains, veggies, and lean meats. |

I have adopted the "I'm ok, you're ok" policy. Tis simply that. Radical acceptance of others as they are. You can have expectations, you just need to get over the disappointment when they are not met. Life cannot be lived in a vacuum, decisions about events are greatly influenced by individual perception, and what you expect from others may not be what I expect from others! |

30 years old so my memories are 80's and 90's - "This is your brain. This is your brain on drugs." Must have been a powerful commercial if I still remember it 23 years later. -NINTENDO!! Need I say more? My friendships were based on who had one...(we weren't allowed) -Every park had a tire swing, a teeter totter, and a merry-go-round and every neighborhood pool had a deep end with a diving board. Safety sucks. -Station wagons with jump seats! -Pogs!? I think that was what they were called. Those collectible milk bottle cap things in the early 90's. Maybe it was a west coast thing.

Please tell me she is a working single mom and her kids thus have more responsibilities. I had the best mother in the world growing up. My main responsibility as a kid was to get good grades. I did have chores, but my stay at home mom did most of the housework, baked fresh cookies, made homemade healthy meals, etc. A car was not given to me at 16, I had to use my babysitting money if I wanted pricey duds, and there were very strict limitations on electronic media (computer was in the family room, no tv in bedrooms, etc.). I hope to raise my child in a similar fashion. Her job is not to keep the house clean- yes she will help me when she can..but she is allowed to forget to clean up her mess every now and then (I work and our life is chaotic enough as it is). I worry more about all of the entitlement to material items kid these days seem to have. |

Drug reps in my doctor's office are the bane of my existence. Fortunately the government has cracked down on that type of "bribery spending" by the pharmaceuticals. It used to be, at any given time, the office would be overflowing with chocolate, cookies, and donuts. I say we office workers, in addition to bringing healthy snacks, we: (1) Pack our lunches and resist the urge to grab fast food (2) Bring in an emergency afternoon slump snack (this is when I usually cave to the sweets hanging around). Instead I eat almonds or fruit. (3) Eat a healthy breakfast before going to work! (For me, this means waking up at 5am) |

knoppie- I never force anyone to do what they don't want to do. If you refuse to weigh, I do chart that patient refused and weight was self-reported. Things like that color your record and may make a doctor think you are a "difficult patient" before even meeting you. That sucks, but is just one of the little truths most patients don't think about. It really is in your best interest to just step on the scale...backwards, forwards, eyes closed, whatever! |

Thanks guys for the helpful opinions! I absolutely allow patients to stand backwards on the scale and offer that as a choice if I hear moans and groans. Just wanted to get it out there that I hate to ask people to get on the scale just as much as people hate to get on the scale. Personally, I dread going to any kind of doctor (probably because I know too much about what goes on behind scenes) and completely sympathize with the whole scale phobia deal. I definitely don't get any sick or twisted pleasure from weighing people. Now giving shots...that is a whole different story

I actually live in northern VA. I was thinking about this topic on my run yesterday (I went running around 3, as school was letting out). I was pleasantly surprised that several little boys and girls smiled and said hi to me before I said hi to them. My faith in humanity is restored! hah |
