Fitness Pain in big toe - any walkers/runners experience this? Jul 31 2009

Update: I went to a podiatrist who took x-rays and said I had injured my sesamoids (the small bones at the base of my big toe).  It's a common injury and he prescribed anti-inflammatories and orthotics for my shoes.  My shoes are good shoes, he just said that I need additional arch support to take the pressure off the ball of my foot and my toes.  When I put the orthotics in my shoes, it was instant relief from the pain I've been having.

The Lounge Twilight Fans.... have you read Midnight Sun: Edward's Version of Twilight? Jan 08 2009

I read it and to be honest, it not only explains Edward's behavior in the book, but it also explains why Robert Pattinson portrayed Edward the way he did in the movie.  Remember... Stephenie Meyer was on the set of the movie and very close to the entire production.  I'm sure that she gave him a lot of insight into Edward that readers like us wouldn't necessarily know because she is, essentially, Edward.

I agree.  You're definitely in the right mindset.  Those were my same thoughts this time last year, and I went on to lose 40+ pounds in 2007.  I'm hoping to lose another 30 in 2008. It's good to remember that this is a lifestyle change and not a "diet" and that we are physical beings with muscles that are meant to be used.  I was afraid of being hungry all the time too (I was when I tried Weight Watchers once), but after the first 7-10 days of CC, I was hardly ever hungry.  Maybe my stomach shrunk, who knows... all I know is, I felt better than I had in years and I was seeing the results to prove it.  Keep going!  You can do it!

I agree with the other posters.  Congrats on your weightloss!  When I got married (almost 2 years ago), I had been going to a gym loyally for 10 months before my wedding, but with all the stress of wedding planning, I didn't lose anything.  Then, after the wedding when things calmed down, I lost almost 50 pounds in 7 months!  Your soon-to-be husband loves you for who you are.  Remember, he loved you when you were 13 pounds heavier too!  :)  And after the wedding stress is over, I know those last 20 pounds will come right off!  (It's amazing what stress does to our bodies).
Health & Support "Bacne" anyone??? Jan 07 2008

I have suffered from bacne (and my dad too - I'm 27, he's 60).  My doctor put me on an oral antibiotic for 3 months and that cleared it up fairly well.  I still get the occasional breakout, but not nearly as bad.  My dad did the Accutane thing and it worked just as well.  His is much better - just the occasional spot or two.

Since this plateau of mine for the last 30lbs does not want to budge, I have called in the professionals! :)

Anyone else use Jenny Craig???

I've never tried Jenny Craig, but I'm in the same boat as you.  I lost 47 pounds in the first 6-7 months of 2007.  By December, I hadn't lost anything since July and I decided to take the month off.  I enjoyed my month off (only gained 6 pounds) and now I'm back to counting calories.  I'm hoping the month off will have kick-started things for me, but if not, my doctor and I are going to have a chat about what a reasonable weight for me is, especially if my body doesn't seem to want to lose anymore.  Good luck - let us know how Jenny Craig works for you.

Recipes Low Calorie Pumpkin muffins Jan 03 2008

Well, according to the friend who got the recipe, it's only 1 weight watchers point, but I think it really depends on how big you make your muffins (i.e. how many you make) and what cake mix you use.  If you can squeeze 24 muffins out of it, they'd be about 90 calories (85 for the cake mix and 5-ish for the pumpkin).  It's easy to figure out if you look at the "as boxed" nutrition for the cake mix (not the "as prepared" because that includes the oil and eggs).  If you only make 18 muffins, then they'd be 120 calories each.

My mom pestered me for years to stop biting my nails (I was also a thumb-sucker until the 1st grade when I had to get a dental appliance that forced me to stop).  We tried everything, but nothing worked.  By the time I got to my senior year in high school, I was so sick of my stubby, ugly fingers that I forced myself to quit.  I sometimes catch myself wanting to bite them (I'm 27 now), especially if one is broken and I don't have any clippers or file handy, but I usually stop myself before I do it.  My husband (same age) stopped biting his in the last year or so.  He hated the way his looked too and also how much it would hurt when he was cooking something and the juices got into the open cuts.  I think you just have to be in the right mindset for it.

What if you try not biting one hand (or even just one finger).  Once you've been successful with one, move to the next one and so on until you're completely done.  I'm at the point now that I love the clicking noise of my long-ish nails on things (like my computer keyboard) and not having them makes me feel awkward.

I don't know about calories burned, but I just thought I'd warn you to take it easy at first with the wii games.  We got a Wii when they first came out and both me and my husband suffered elbow and shoulder injuries.  Try not to over-exert yourself (it's easy to do with these games and you won't feel it until the next day.  But, you're right - it is definitely a good workout.  Unless you bounce/jump around during your boxing rounds, I'd add a walk around the block or some other lower-body exercises to the routine.

I used WATP videos for the first six-months of 2007 (when I lost about 30 pounds).  They are great videos and the various intensity levels are good for anyone at a beginning or intermediate level.  There are lots of them out there, too, so there is lots of variety (I would try them out with Netflix and when I found one that I liked, I would buy it).  After a while, I got bored with them.  Not because they weren't a good workout - they were.  I just got tired of the same movements (and doing them alone) and decided to join a local Jazzercise class instead.  My Jazzercise class was canceled last month, so I think I'll be going back to WATP this month.  Also, if you visit their website, you can sign up for a free newsletter and if you become a die-hard fan, you can join (for a fee) their WATP club, which gives you access to exclusive stuff and discounts on products.
The Lounge LEAST favorite Christmas songs Nov 30 2007

I agree with many of the songs previously mentioned (ESPECIALLY Christmas Shoes).  Are your local radio stations going more "generic" with their Christmas music?  It seems like every year my local Christmas music station has a smaller and smaller pool of music that they play.  This year, I swear they only have 12 songs to choose from.  I listen to the radio at work and by lunch time I have to turn it off.  Did some unofficial rule come out that they can't play "traditional" songs because it will offend people?  To be honest, I'm a lot more offended by "Christmas Shoes" and "Santa Baby" than I am by "O Come all Ye Faithful" or "Joy to the World".  The local Christian station is also playing the occasional Christmas song, but it's almost to the opposite extreme - what I would call "in your face" contemporary Christmas.  Guess I'll just have to stick to my iPod if I want to hear the Mormon Tabernacle Choir.

Many of the original consoles have developed horrible problems.  My husbands' friend has one of the first consoles and his stopped working months ago.  He did some research online and found that it was a common problem.  He later found out that Microsoft is aware of the problems (a manufacturing defect and/or original design flaw).  Microsoft said they would fix the problem, if he sent them the console along with $250.  He ended up finding some repair instructions online and managed to open the console and repair it himself.  Works great now.

I would hope that the newer consoles don't have this problem, but you never know.  If your husband is comfortable with computer hardware, he could probably fix whatever problems might develop with online instructions. Also, if you buy it, I wouldn't put the console in an entertainment center with other electrical components.  It does get extremely hot and needs to be in a well ventilated location to avoid overheating.

Yes, I read that part of the article and it's horrifying to me as well.  But, having lived in Latin America, I can comprehend (in a twisted way), why a society might think that this method of killing their unwanted animals is the only available method for them.  This issue is something that we, as concerned citizens of this planet and animal lovers, should be concerned with - there's no question about that.  My initial thought is - where is PETA or other animal rights organizations in situations like this?  Why aren't they intervening to save these unwanted animals?

I am fluent in Spanish and just finished reading this article in La Prensa. The director of the art gallery said, basically, that she is a human being and as such couldn't possibly permit the mistreatment of an animal, especially in her own gallery. She confirmed that the dog ate on occasion and did not die, but escaped the exhibit during the night.

The art exhibit was the artist's way of showing how a homeless, sick dog only gets attention when it's in an art display and not when it's found on the streets. IMO, he honored this dog by including him in this social statement, not mistreated him.

Stray animals are a problem in many countries in the world, including latin American countries. This artist is making a statement about how his culture treats animals is inhumane. Yes, the animal massacre in other countries is horrible, but in the US, we essentially do the same thing - experts estimate that up to 9 million (yes, MILLION) animals are euthanized each year in the US. Other countries just don't have the resources that we have in the US to "humanely" euthanize animals.

What can you do to help? get your pet spayed or neutered; don't adopt an animal unless you are prepared for the responsibility, and make sure you pet has ID tags or microchipped.

When I was a teenager, I worked for a financial planner.  She had lots of filing to do and stuffing envelopes, so that's what I started out doing.  Then, she added more responsibilities as I continued to work there.  All my friends worked at restaurants and they were jealous that I had a nice job where I didn't have to be on my feet all day.  It started out as a summer job, but right before school was supposed to start up again, they asked if I would keep working during the school year (after school and some Saturdays).  I ended up working there through my Freshman year of college.

I echo the recommendation for Walk Away the Pounds by Leslie Sansone.  Those are great low-impact videos.  Also, if you live in a fairly metropolitan area, look to see if there's a Jazzercise class near you.  Many Jazzercise sites have class times that offer babysitting.  You can find a class at www.jazzercise.com. ;

I agree with everyone who says get a second opinion.  The simple fact that you've come on this forum looking for advice or confirmation shows that you have your own  doubts about his treatment recommendations.  You should see a nutritionist and tell them what your doctor said and see what they say about it.  I'm also 5'5" and 27 years old, and I started counting calories because that's what my doctor recommended.  She said to limit my calorie intake to 1500 calories a day.  As a result, I've gone from 220 pounds to 169 (and that includes maintaining for the last 3-4 months).  No, counting calories isn't going to get you to a healthy weight in a month, but it's the safest way to lose weight.  Any faster with dramatic diets (or surgery) will take a horrible toll on your body.  And it's quite possible that if you lose weight the healthy way, some of your other health problems will fade away with your weight.

Sounds like your 3 year old is just throwing a tantrum to me.  He tires himself out by throwing the tantrum and then collapses from exhaustion.  But if it concerns you, definitely see your pediatrician.  There are other symptoms of diabetes in addition to being grumpy when your blood sugar is low and then crashing after you eat something.  I'm sure you can find these other symptoms online.  I'm not a mother (yet) but I have nieces, nephews, and 30 different families I babysat for throughout my teens and early 20s.  My advice on dealing with him is simply not to keep chocolate in the house (or at least in any location where he can see it or see you eating it).  When he has a tantrum, tell him that you would give him some, but there isn't any.  If he continues to throw a tantrum, let him.  But, whatever you do, don't give him any.  Each time you do that it gives him motivation to do it over and over again.  If you serve "dessert" after dinner, you can take the stance that chocolate is a treat that we enjoy after we eat dinner and not before.  He is 3, after all.  He's going to throw tantrums just to throw them.

As far as your 8 year old and weighing herself - again, consult your pediatrician or even a ped. psychologist (I bet there are even articles or forums on the internet addressing this very question).  My initial instinct is to say yes, it's okay to let her weight herself, but not too often and always with you there so that you can reassure her that she's normal and growing and we all grow at different rates.  I was one of those "early-bloomers" in school and developed curves much earlier than almost all of my friends.  It was hard to see all the other "skinnier" girls in my class, but reassurance is key to helping her feel like it's okay to look the way that she does.  She may be confident now, but that could change and your reassurance is extremely important.  Never tell her or make any kind of reference that she needs to lose weight - she will remember that forever (I know this from personal experience)! No 8 year old should lose weight - they have lots more growing to do and need all the nutrients they can get.

It's concerning that her school PE class weighs kids that age.  I'd talk to the PE teacher or a school administrator about that and see if they have any evidence of this being beneficial.  Sometimes it's just a matter of questioning something they've "always" done and never really thought about.  Your daughter's pediatrician might also provide some good insight on this issue as well.  Just because your daughter is confident and okay with her physical appearance doesn't mean that her classmates are that way - your questioning this practice might just help protect another little girl or boy from developing a self-confidence issue.  Personally, I think weighing children in PE class is unnecessary and embarrassing (especially when they get to puberty).  Why does a PE teacher need to know a child's weight?  That shouldn't have any effect on their curriculum.

I just discovered this Silk Nog at my store last night and bought it to try.  It's delicious.  If you like eggnogg, but hate all the calories, this is the way to go.  It's not quite as thick as traditional eggnog, but the flavor it pretty close to the real thing and is a great low-cal alternative.  Sprinkle a little nutmeg on top and you'll be ready for the holidays.
