I'm 5'6" and hover anywhere between 140 and 148 from week to week...I've been on the higher end lately (146). My goal weight is 125, although I don't know if that will be achievable with the level of strength/fitness I want to get to. I run and I just took up climbing, which I think is going to build up some nice muscles! Anyway, I've gotten myself down to 117-120 before, but looked a little sickly skinny (I'm naturally pretty curvaceous/Botticellean :), so I don't know if I'll be able to get as low as 125 without sacrificing some strength and fitness. If not, I'll be happy with 130-135 range, as long as I can start buying smaller jeans! :)

I also have the copper IUD - I took the day off work when I got mine in, and while I PROBABLY could have gone, I'm glad I didn't. The cramps were on and off, pretty severe at times but not constant. I just curled up in bed for the rest of the afternoon with a book :) If you can afford it, I'd schedule it in the afternoon and take the rest of the day off - if for nothing else than your peace of mind!

Chicken with the bones in...especially wings, thighs, etc. I'm always afraid of biting into it and then seeing horrid blood vessels, gristle, connective tissue, etc. *SHIVER!* If I do eat it, I can only eat the biggest, "safe" chunks off and leave lots behind.

Actually, I'm a little afraid of any meat that hasn't been thoroughly trimmed/processed/prepared so that there's little to no reminder that you're actually eating a creature's muscle tissue. I am completely grossed out watching people tear apart hot wings, BBQ ribs, etc...EW! Ha ha, maybe I should just be a vegetarian.

Gravy is also a big NO. I don't even want it near my plate if it's being served at a table.

Finally, "regular" pop (soda, whatever)...ridiculous, because up until 3 days ago I was basically the biggest sugar fiend ever, devouring candy, cookies, desserts, ice cream, etc like it was my job...but ever since age 15 or so when I started drinking diet, I've had a huge "fat" fear of full-sugar soft drinks.

I tend to wuss out really easily on cardio when I'm first starting out an exercise programme and am out of shape. When I'm in shape and running regularly I can go for 45 mins or more, but when I'm out of shape (like now), I'll jog for 10 minutes and then I just "have" to stop. Curiously though, I can run for at least 30 mins at a hard pace if I go with my roommate (who's in better shape than me) - so I know it's all in my head! Grr.

If I'm by myself and just can't make myself keep running, I do a powerwalk for a few minutes to recover and then try to start again. If you are at all able to do running/walking outside, I'd definitely recommend it vs. the treadmill. If you chicken out after 13 minutes on the treadmill, it's much easier to just walk away. If you chicken out after 13 minutes of running/walking outside, then you MUST do at least that same distance back in order to get home :)

Potato Oles from Taco John's are the DEVIL! They're basically deep-fried tater tots with some Mexican seasoning. A small order has 440 calories and 25 grams of fat!!! I used to go through the drive through and get them as a SNACK after work - sometimes with guacamole and/or nacho cheese sauce for dipping, too!

Doughnuts...I used to get a big one with icing and sprinkles, along with a bottle of milk, as breakfast on my way to work sometimes.

Games & Challenges Lose 20 lb. by September 15th May 29 2008

Hi ladies. I'm in if you're still accepting a few more!

I'm 24, 5'6", 147, and would LOVE to lose 20 by September 15! I realize I'm not "technically" overweight by BMI standards but I definitely feel like I am for my body type. I've kind of yo-yo'ed around between 115 (starving) and 140 since my late teens but have put on a few pounds more in the last year or two (graduated from college, desk job, etc). I have a lot of perfectly good size 4 and 6 pants that I can no longer get over my butt :( 127 sounds like a pretty good goal weight to begin with; I'll see when that time comes if I want to lose another 5 or whatever.

I used to work at mcdonalds and let me tell you, some ppl got some loogie burgers, skoal cokes, cigarette ash sweet tea, and even an "EXTRA" special secret sauce big macs.

That's extremely disgusting. You seem proud to admit you did these things.

Let's hope she meant she was seeing OTHER workers do these things and didn't do them herself. This is why you should never be rude to waitstaff and service workers - most are decent people but a few are freaking disgusting, and if you choose to eat at restaurants, you're at their mercy! Surprised

Health & Support Experience with Paraguard IUD May 16 2008

Hi, I am in a pretty similar situation to yours - 24, never had children, do not want them for quite a long time, in a long-term relationship.

I got on the pill probably 4 years ago to regulate my (long, heavy and painful) cycle. Since switching to a generic brand because of insurance reasons, I gained about 20 pounds and experienced horrendous mood swings. I finally decided that the side effects of the hormones weren't worth the cycle regulation and got the IUD.

I am VERY satisfied with it so far.

  • I had some fairly intense cramping the day it was put in and for about a week afterwards, but it was bearable with ibuprofen and Midol. I've had one period since having it in and honestly the cramps weren't any worse than when I was on the pill --aka, not bad at all. The weird thing was that they felt somehow different than before I had the IUD...like they were coming from a different place maybe? My cycle wasn't horribly heavy like they warned me it might be. I think it's just naturally regulated itself now that I'm a bit older (compared to when I was in my teens).
  • I definitely cannot feel the device or tell that it's there.
  • Yeah, it was pretty uncomfortable getting it inserted...when I said "OW," the clinician jokingly said that now know I knew what it will feel like if I have a baby some day! But the discomfort only lasted for the minute or so it took for them to put it in - NOT a big deal in the long run.

Overall I'm loving it. It's WONDERFUL not to have to remember to take the stupid pill every day. More importantly, I finally feel like 'myself' again without the hormones - no more Princess Nutjob Laughing

Good luck with whatever you decide!

how many calories in standard fountain club soda???

Zero.

Yes, trhawley is right. Tonic water, however --as in gin & tonic-- DOES have calories, almost as many as in pop. My favorite low-cal cocktail is vodka and soda water with a lime wedge, but sometimes you have to be careful that the bartender actually makes it with soda and not tonic water or 7-Up. I've actually had interactions with (inexperienced, I'm assuming) bartenders that went like this:

ME: Vodka and soda with a lime, please.

BARTENDER: (makes drink) ...Okay, here's a vodka tonic/vodka and 7.

ME: Umm...actually what I wanted was just vodka and PLAIN SODA WATER...

Weight Loss Question for the ladies! May 15 2008

While on Ortho Tri-Cyclen Lo over a period of 2 years(ish), I fluctuated between low 120s with hardcore dieting and exercise and high 130s with no dieting and little to no exercise (I'm 5'6" by the way). I never really got above 138 or so, even when I was eating horribly and not exercising much.

Then, because of my insurance plan at the time, I had to get on some crappy generic brand (Tri-Sprintec) which they claimed was the same thing as original Ortho. In the two years I was on that, I went from approximately 127 to 147. I can attribute a little bit of that weight gain to the fact that I graduated from college and was no longer walking to class every day, but I know that I didn't put on 20 pounds from that lifestyle change alone. I feel like the Tri-Sprintec was a big culprit too. It made me ravenous and I just seemed to gain weight more easily than I ever had.

Even worse, it made me the princess of crazy-town, so I finally got an IUD (non-hormonal - Paragard) a little over a month ago. It's made a HUGE difference in my mood and a smaller yet still noticeable difference in my cravings. I know some people have had horrible side effects with the IUDs, but I've been just fine...no debilitating cramps, horrendously heavy bleeding etc. So I would definitely recommend Paragard!

Candy of any sort - chocolate, jellybeans, gummy candy, etc. Anything that comes in a "snack size" individual package or in a large bag. I'm not really tempted by full-size candy bars but that's about it.

I'm about to tell my roommate that if she wants to buy it, she needs to keep it in her room where I can't get at it. I simply can't have it in the apartment. I can control myself fairly well with most other foods, but if candy is there I WILL eat it! Frown

I don't know whether the theory of your body eating your fat on an empty stomach is true or not, but I do find that if I work out right after work on an empty stomach, it really reduces my appetite and I eat less for dinner.

As long as you are well hydrated and you aren't so hungry you feel lightheaded, I don't think there's anything wrong with working out hungry.

If you have a fridge at work, try bringing lowfat, low sugar yogurt, string cheese, hard boiled egg, etc. The protein will keep you full MUCH longer than cereal bars or candy! I also drink cup after cup of tea...the hot beverage tricks you into feeling full for a little while!

Well kids, I'm actually an adult now, but I WAS homeschooled from kindergarten through 7th grade (erm, 1989-1997...yeah, I'm old). It's so fun for me to read all of your posts. Back when I was a homeschooled kid, the internet was NOTHING like what it is today, so we were much more isolated from "the world."

I wasn't one of those bun-and-long-jean-skirt-wearing homeschoolers, but I definitely wasn't as cool as all of you guys :) I absolutely hated being homeschooled at the time and thought it basically ruined my chances of ever being "normal", but I think I turned out fine. I went to public high school, made tons of friends, and was wayyy ahead of most of my classmates academically. I ended up being valedictorian! Now I'm glad I was homeschooled...I think it's made me a more quirky, interesting and well-rounded individual :)

Allergy Remedies
Is It Possible to Go Natural?
The side effects of allergy medications keep some people from using them. Natural remedies can be a great alternative, but some are more effective than others.
