| Weight Loss | do we have to eat "real" meals? | Nov 10 2007 02:38 (UTC) |

Ha ha, stellajo, that's so true! My dad was diagnosed with diabetes last year & is trying to control it with diet & has dropped 50 pounds in 8 months just from that -- not counting calories or working out differently, just from eating healthy foods & cutting out the beer (which he didn't really drink much of, anyway). I think it depends on what satisfies you. Some people are more satisfied with traditional meals, & some people would rather graze, & some people work out a combination of the two. If you miss traditional meals, though, like it kinda seems you do, remember that you can have that same sense of fullness by 1) eating warmed food and 2) making sure you have a balance of protein, carbs, & fats on your plate -- for some reason the body feels more satisfied when you eat all three @ once. |

Hey! For those of you running races, you should really make sure to refuel within an hour after finishing! & not just a bowl of grapes, either! Otherwise you'll feel weak, cranky, dehydrated, you'll be more likely to be sore the next day, you might get a headache, or even suffer from nausea, & the longer you wait to eat the worse it is! I'm with those who find that it's harder to get back on track after gorging -- which I solve by eating very slowly. I may go over my caloric intake, but as long as I don't stretch my stomach, I'm ok. |

| One thing about crunches is that they only work your upper abdomen. Do you notice that you're starting to have more tone in your waist, but are still flabby lower down? Check out the exercise section of the website for ab exercises that will work your lower abs & obliques. Variety not only helps you from getting bored with your workout program, it also helps keep you from over/under developing certain parts of your body. | |||

| I have 'em too. When I look @ the back of my thighs, I can actually see an ovular area about the length of my hand, where the fat is being stored that seems to be creating the effect. The only way I've found to neutralize the 2nd hips is to tone the area is by doing squats/lunges, leg lifts, etc. For me it doesn't really disappear, but just becomes less prominent. | |||

| When you say that you used to lift weights, does that mean that you don't anymore? It may be that the lack of that activity in your life has changed the ratio of calories in vs. calories out. Maybe you should pick it back up again -- might help you lose the lovehandles and lower your bodyfat a bit -- although your bodyfat is in a perfectly normal range -- regardless of what the scales say. | |||

I would suggest working out a lot and eating more, rather than a light workout & eating less -- because if you're already strong & have endurance, basic training won't be so tough. Edit: not eating more than you're burning, but eating more than 1250. |

| Weight Loss | Confused feelings | Nov 09 2007 05:05 (UTC) |

| I agree with udokier. Additionally, I'd like to point out that if you feel unsure about how to maintain now, it might be kinda scary if you drop another 10 pounds and still can't figure out how to maintain! It seems like your main reason to keep losing is because you are afraid of maintaining. So, why don't you face your fear head on? If you gain five pounds in the process, it's not like you don't know how to lose them again! Then, when you feel like you are comfortable maintaining and you've got it pretty well figured out, and you still feel like you want to lose 10 lbs, go for it. And if you find you don't -- don't. You look great, and said you feel great, so what else is there, right? :) | |||
| Weight Loss | Lose 18 pounds in 4 days--- Is this insane or ingenius? Have you tried it? Please tell me!!! | Nov 09 2007 03:49 (UTC) |

| Ah, to live in a perfect world ... My guess is that even if you could successfully lose 18 lbs in 4 days, it would be on a regimen that would be very difficult to make a lifestyle out of (not to mention dangerous), and it would not be "true weight." So, if you want to lose 18 lbs for a class reunion, and put it all back on, maybe plus some, the next week, then go for it. But if you want to lose 18 lbs and keep them off, then it's best to lose them at a slower rate. | |||

If you eat too few calories for a long period of time (one day isn't going to make a difference), your metabolism slows down so that you need fewer calories to survive -- therefore, once you begin eating normally again, your weight will go up very quickly. For very sustained periods of time (say, a year?) it hurts your body in a variety of other ways. Some women lose their periods, lose their hair, lose muscle & strength, lose all-over energy, & eventually your body starts digesting your organs to furnish itself with the necessary nutrients. Not very nice. Also, you see those starving kids on tv with the huge bellies? The huge belly is another side-effect of starvation for some -- something to do with lack of muscle in the abdomen, I think. |

| It completely depends on what your expectations are, of course. Great for building lean muscle and a certain degree of strength -- that is, strength to move your own body around, but not so much for moving other objects around, great for balance & posture. | |||

omg, when I was doing a poor-college-student's version of the South Beach Diet I bought a deli roasted chicken to last me an entire weekend, and ate the whole thing in less than an hour, lol. Those things are DANGEROUS!
I tend to overeat (I won't call it bingeing 'cause it doesn't make me feel guilty afterwards) when I'm hungover or depressed, and when I've had a fright. |

Right -- the two numbers for your burn meter are 1) the number that CC estimates you will burn according to the activity level you selected and 2) the actual amount you have burned, according to what you have input into your "activity log." Eating 1400 calories a day at a 2000 calorie activity level will put you at a calorie deficity of 600 calories per day, for 4200 a week. A pound is 3500 calories, so you should be losing a little over a pound a week at that rate. Of course, the body doesn't always work as mechanically as we'd like it to, but you are at a healthy deficit & healthy amount of calories, so I think you'll do just fine. |

What is your main confusion concerning the Burn meter? I'm no expert, but I have a pretty good idea of what's going on. As for activity, ever think about getting one of those infant backpacks? My folks used to have one -- I vaguely remember my dad strapping me in while he went X-Country skiing one winter. Also great for walks, hiking ... strollers are good, too. Or those bicycle trailers that can be used to haul kiddies. |

| Weight Loss | Cheat to Lose "Diet" | Nov 08 2007 03:10 (UTC) |

| Haven't read it, but I think a large part of the "cheat day" theory is the mentality that it's easier to stick to a lifestyle change if you know that once a week you can eat what you want. | |||

| I was 5'7" and grew to 5'8", fluctuating between 135 and 150, depending on whether it was basketball season or running season (my guess is a difference in muscle mass, as my clothes always fit the same!) Went from a size 7-11 as my hips spread their wings ... ;) Always felt good about my body, though -- didn't really spare it much thought other than to feed it and use it. | |||
