Why is chocolate milk better than regular milk?

Hey, I'm not complaining, I'm gonna head to the supermarket right now and buy a gallon of the stuff!  But isn't plain old regular milk healthier than chocolate milk?

To me it always feels like there is a lag between healthy diet and weight loss.  I can be really good for a week and see no weight loss, but then the following week I start to see results.

Give it a try!  Can you go a month without milk, bread, alcohol, potatoes and the sugary snacks?  You should be able to get all the carbs and fibre you need from veges and a limited amount of fruit.

Do it for a month and see if it works for you.  As you can see, everyone has an opinion on this so you have to try if for yourself!

I think cheat days/meals are a good idea for your general sanity and quality of life.  Just don't go crazy, try and stop after that third slice.

But to do it to boost metabolism?  I don't know.

Weight Loss PB question? May 29 2012

Original Post by phoray:

Quote from Joel Fuhrman M.D.

""When you are overweight, you have a good store of fat on your body, so you don't need to worry about not ingesting enough fat. You are not going to be fat deficient, even if your diet is low in fat. As you lose weight, you will actually be on a "high fat diet" as you will be utilizing the fat you have around your mid section for energy.""

He goes on to say seeking Omega 3 fat sources is the most important when it comes to fat concerns (some fish, walnuts, or ground flax seed is recommended). Also, if you are already slim and exercise, that the person is free to eat nuts, avocados, etc within reasonable limits while avoiding weight gain.

I will never limit nutrient dense green vegetables and fruits. If what you mean by "carbs" are potatoes, white rice, and processed shelf stable bread, then I whole heartedly agree.

I think limiting peanut butter to a single serving per day (2 tbsp, not 3) would give you more caloric room for something else; a banana, a medium salad, and you will feel fuller. Therefore, you will eat less as a result.

I agree with all that but I think you are making leap to take that and interpret it to mean that you should only get 10% of your calories from fat.

Dietary fat does not equal body fat.

Any unused calories, whether they be protein, carbs or fats will end up as body fat.

I'm pretty sure this site recommends at least 20% of your calories from fat.

If you really want to cut something, then carbs is the one.

You are fine.  That's the one of the big advantages of going with the 1000 calorie deficit - if you have an off day, or you miscalculate something, then you still should be in the weight loss range.

Yep, with this New Rules program it splits the full body workouts into A and B routines so it's not like you are doing the same exercise 3 days a week.  And, in reality I do miss the occasional lifting workout so I am probably doing more like 2.5 days per week on average.

Thanks for all the opinions!

Yep, thanks, I guess I just need to listen to my body and see how I feel.  My thinking is that my workouts are varied enough that I should be OK. The way life gets in the way sometimes, I usually miss a workout here and there anyway.

Perhaps as the intensity of my workouts continues to increase, I may need to force some cut backs.

Thanks!

The exclamaition points, immediately pointing out that you're a GP, it sounds defensive.

I wasn't trying to offend.

If anyone sounds defensive, it's you.  You're a moderator and you think it's ok to say things like, "Whoa. Did I strike a nerve?"?

No wonder decorum has gone out the window around here.

1200 calories for a mostly sedentary woman is hardly starving - probably close to the 1000 calorie deficit that many people on this site recommend (including the site itself).

If her BMR is over 1500, she needs to eat more. 1000 calorie deficit should be achieved through physical activity, not under eating. Please do your research.

I think people get too caught up in the math.  You may call it science but we all know that these are just estimates.  Nobody really knows what their actual BMR is.  Calorie burn rates for activity are estimates also.  And different websites will give you different values for the number of calories in the same food.

Add to that the human factor - you should know that most people grossly over-estimate the number of calories they are burning and under estimate what they eat.

Look, I think the OP should eat more calories, eat a balanced diet, and do more exercise.  But the OPs plan is hardly the worst I have seen on this forum today!

The one thing  I can say with absolute certainty is that everyone is different, and you need to do what works for you!

If 13 days feels like hard work....then look out!  Laughing

60lbs by January is do-able but it will not be easy.  I think long-term goals are tough to hit - the closer you get to goal the harder it is to lose - plus you will no doubt hit a few inevitable plateaus along the way.

You are off to a great start, just keep doing what you're doing, and aim to lose 1-2lbs per week.  If you can do that between now and the end of the year you will have lost 30-50lbs and you will look and feel great!

Good luck!

The diet doesn't sound all that bad...although maybe not a long term solution.  I think it's the title of the thread that is throwing people.  Any time the name of a diet has the word "amazing" or "days" in it, it will naturally bring out the skeptics!  And to make matters worse, the OP calls is "magic"!

1200 calories for a mostly sedentary woman is hardly starving - probably close to the 1000 calorie deficit that many people on this site recommend (including the site itself).

As long as the OP understands that this kind of rapid weight loss is pretty normal when starting a new eating plan - especially one the includes drinking lots of water.  I would expect the weight losses to normalize to around 2lbs per week.  Of course, the true test will be to see where the OP is at in 6 months, or a year.

Good luck!

Fitness My treadmill has no incline options, is it worth investing one with an incline instead? May 14 2012

The biggest advantage of the incline is that you don't need to run.  Ramp it up to 10 and walk at 4mph will be a good workout for anyone.  This is great if your knees aren't up to running.

Weight Loss Is it helpful to maintain a short while after losing a portion? May 10 2012

Yes, it's very hard both physically and mentally to lose weight over an extended period of time.  Your body starts to get used to eating less calories and burns less fat.

I think it is a great idea to take a break for a month or two and then start up again when you are ready.  (Just don't give anything back!)

I don't believe you should be "sweating a lot" or "out of breath". Some people just don't sweat that much.  I do think that your heart racing is a good sign though.

Try it - you will notice the difference.

I don't think you understood. I am doing NROLFW. I sweat a whole lot less than a lot of other people. Sweating has nothing to do with being active.

I meant the "out of breath" part.  Of course some people sweat more than others.  Check out rules 1 through 4.
