Foods Early Birds: When do you eat your meals? Mar 16 2010

I found this thread really interesting---I've been thinking lately that my eating schedule is really strange, but it looks like a lot of people have VERY different schedules!

Every day:

5:30/6 Wake Up

6:30 Coffee on the way to the gym

11:30 Breakfast

3:30 Lunch

7:30 Dinner

8:30/9 Snack

For a while I was trying to eat before I went  to the gym or ran, but I found that 1 of 2 things always happened:

1. I was STARVING all day, and ended up using up my calories by midday

2. I, for whatever reason, cannot exercise at a high intensity after I've eaten. I just feel sluggish and tired; a cup of coffee or tea seems to be the perfect solution for me...not completely running on empty, but not feeling bleh while working out/runnin!

Fitness Joggers -- slow, steady joggers.... join me? Mar 13 2010

Hi! Not exactly what you're looking for, just wanted to say this:

You're a RUNNER! You should be SO proud of your 18 miles a week!! That's amazing! And it's 18 miles more than A LOT of people are running!

I can't stand when people say "Oh, you only run ----- minute miles, then you're a JOGGER, not a RUNNER!"

So you might be running slower than another runner who is training for a marathon, but that person might be slower than someone else who's just out running for fun..you know?

Be proud of the 18 miles that you run each week! Yay for you!!!

How do you find your activity level? I understand maintenance/deficit and what-have-you, my question is about figuring out how to set my activity level!

Weight Loss How to weigh fruit? Feb 25 2010
11:47 (UTC)

Thanks everyone for all of your replies.

I know that some items have different portion sizes/descriptions to customize with, but some do not. Grapefruit, for example, list fruit size by diameter but does not indicate whether that includes the skin. The skin adds an additional 2 ounces, so it definitely affects the amount of calories being logged.

Weight Loss Is there really any point in couning calories in fruits and veggies? Feb 23 2010

I tried Weight Watcher for a while (fabulous program, I know many people who it has worked wonders for...so this is not an anti-WW post!) and couldn't figure out why I wasn't losing, and was even gaining at times...I started counting calories again and realized that all those "0 point" veggies and very low point fruits were adding up quickly: I was often eating 500+ calories in "free" food! eeek!!!

When it comes right down to it if you eat over your daily required calories (whether it's in fruit, vegetables, or snickers) you will gain weight. Eat at a deficit and you should lose!

To sum up my opinion: Yup, you should definitely count fruit and veggie calories!

Weight Loss Depo Provera shots causing extreme weight gain? Feb 21 2010

I started Depo when I was 15, stayed on it til last I was 24. I went off b/c my doc said the maximum recommended time to be on it is 2 yrs. I LOVED it. The only side effect that I had was heavy spotting; to be honest, it lasted several months and was quite a nuisance, however (for me) the advantages outweighed the nuisance. After the first few months, I didn't have to worry about a period for 9 years.

I did not gain weight in my first 2 years on the shot, when I went to college I gained a LOT of weight...but I'm going to have to contribute that to the insane amount of junk food I was eating, NOT the shot! Wink

Around the time I went off the shot I gained about 20 lbs, again, not sure if I can contribute that to the shot or lifestyle choices the time.

I waited for my period to come back (almost 1 year), before trying to find a new bc..wow--what a hassle! Pills were not for me (***ignorant poster who claims if you can't remember to take a pill, you're not responsible enough to be having sex---please take note***) My schedule changes every day- I set an alarm to remind me to take my pill every day, but there would be days when shooting would run over and I would be on set when I needed to take that pill...can't interrupt filming to take it! Or a million other schedule changes would cause me to not be able to take it within that 1 hour time slot for maximum effectiveness--and I did my research, the effectiveness drops RAPIDLY outside of that one hour time frame!

I'm currently trying Nuva Ring, so far so good!!

IN SUMMARY:

Different strokes for different folks. I loved Depo and it worked very well *for me*.

Please don't run around talking about how awful something is for everyone, when you only know how it has affected you!

Foods mmmmm....Artichoke! Apr 16 2009

And the award for understanding the original post goes to......

white_sakura!! That's exactly what I'm looking for: "the weight of the entire vegetable, but has the nutritional info on only the meat"

No I don't intend to eat the tough leaves and fibers...ick. Part of the fun of eating an artichoke for me is the way you eat it: pulling the leaves off til you get to the heart, then cleaning the fuzzies off and eating the heart, so I would really prefer to not cut it up and clean it before boiling it, plus if you do that you only get the heart, not the meat off the leaves.

Wow...this turned into a slightly complicated topic!

So..that link says that a medium artichoke is 120 grams.

My artichoke is a pretty average size, I'd guess med/large and weighs in at 500 grams uncooked.

So, again, I'm guessing that the cc count is for only the edible portion. I'm looking for a count for the entire vegetable...*sigh*

The Lounge Hound Dog Behaviours Mar 10 2009

Lynners-

You've pretty much, spot-on (pun intended), described Hound behavior! I've been working with dogs my whole life (training, grooming, showing, vets offices) and at the root of every hound I've ever known are the characteristics you've described!

Personally, I love hounds! I think that they are fantastic dogs, BUT I would never own one. People say that terriers are a TON of work...nope. NOTHING compared to a hound!

I've had a lot of experience working with out of control hounds...feel free to send me a message if I can be of any help!

Best of luck with him!

I don't know why I didn't receive the notices about these posts, so my apologies for the late response...

smwhipple:  I know it's very easy to misread posts, but i have to say that I feel kind of attacked and very judged by your post...I hope that I'm misunderstanding the general feel of it though.

to answer your questions.. I am 24, far past my parent's insurance coverage. The doctor that I go to is a city-funded health care clinic (very much like planned parenthood). A few people have suggested that I didn't tell my doctor all the details-not only did I tell one doctor, but when I got the brush off I made another appointment with a different doctor. I told them everything, which their reactions that much worse, as anyone who has gone through this knows how incredibly hard it is to admit to any part of an eating disorder. As far as finding another doctor, I have, yet another, appointment with a 3rd doctor next month (it was the soonest they could get me in).  As for other people...my dad would lose it if he had any idea about this, he would probably come to NY and forcibly drag me back to Colorado, my sister would love nothing more than to hear that I'm this "messed up"...she's been waiting for it for years, so she's not an option. I don't attend church and am not particularly religious ( I do believe in something, just not sure what that something is!).

I have read the ED Info thread and am making use of the resources there.

I am no longer trying to lose weight, I realize that getting this under control is far more important right now.

I am still actively trying to find a group/organization/counselor to help me. As I said, I am also trying a 3rd doctor. I have been researching the use of antidepressants to help treat ed's. And am employing any and all of the techniques that people have suggested to stop this cycle.

SHEREA:

Everything that you mentioned as your triggers are mine as well. Especially being tired and stressed...which makes a horribly vicious cycle because this ed makes me constantly tired and more stressed every day.

From what I understand, OA isn't religion based specifically. More of a "put your faith in a higher power" (whether that be God, or something else).

Quick question: are either of these new dvd's the same format (or similiar) to the Shred? ie. 3 strength, 2 cardio, 1 abs?

I love the 30 Day Shred...it's the only workout dvd I've been able to stick with without getting bored!

I'm sorry I don't have any advice on how to make you feel better, but I just wanted to say this:

It sucks that you binged (trust me...I know)...but stay strong, don't purge! You're right-you totally have to break that cycle hang in there and don't purge!

Now...if I can only take my own advice, I'll be set!

Fitness Re-evaluating my exercise plan...could use some input! Feb 17 2009

I definitely want to get some cross training going on (biking, 30 Day Shred)...

I was thinking something along these lines:

Day1- easy run (3 miles)

Day2- 30 day Shred

Day3- long walk (minimum 1 hour)

Day4- HIIT/hill work or long run

Day5- 30 Day Shred

Day6- bike ride (minimum 1 hour)

Day7-off

I feel like this is just so little exercise compared with what I've been doing...is it still enough to stay fit and maintain a healthy weight?

Do those long walks count as exercise or should I consider the days I do them "off" days?

Lala's posts were a big reason that I was finally able to "come out" about my eating disorder. I was so scared to admit it, but I've been lurking around on this forum for a while, and I was always to impressed and inspired by her posts...I finally posted for help...and, lo and behold, lala was one of the first to respond.

Thank You...I know it sounds out, being pretty much complete strangers, but you mean a lot to me!Smile

Thank you all so much for your responses, I really appreciate it! It's just so hard-I know I need to get my metabolism going again, and I know that gaining is inevitable, but it's hard to "deal" with knowing that I'm going to get bigger again while getting healthier..you know what I mean?

Feel free to keep the suggestions coming!

kittysaysmeow: 130 lbs for my height is NOT underweight.  I am within the healthy range according to all of the literature I have seen and my doctors.

Yes, there are a few OEA meeting around, but the group leaders that I've spoken with didn't seem particularly receptive to my joining. I got the same feeling I got from my doctors: your not overweight, you don't really have an issue. It's been very disappointing...as I have checked out their website and I think, if I can find a welcoming group, it might be very helpful....)o:

I posted here simply b/c the most people respond to posts in this forum, but if a moderator wants to move it to another section (preferably not weight gain) that's fine!
