I'm 20! * what motivates you to loose the weight ? I've always been on the line between overweight/normal, and since I wasn't necessarily heavy, I never had the motivation to maintain a smaller weight. I've got a really skinny boyfriend though and it became a challenge for me to weigh less than him. Now it's just so rewarding to love the way I look and love the way I feel because I'm living a healthy life style. I could barely do a mile in junior high and just yesterday I completed a 5k with an average of a 12 minute mile. That was HUGE for me! * have you lost any yet? My heaviest was 160, but I averaged about 150 throughout high school and most of college. Currently I'm at 135 (only 5 lbs to go!), so I've lost about 15. * how long have you been on the site? I found this site looking for nutritional information mid-April. So I've been on the site about one to two months. |

Original Post by floggingsully: Word. If you're on a calorie deficit you're not going to gain much muscle. Gaining muscle is very intentional, much like losing weight. |

| Weight Loss | How does eating more make you lose weight? | May 28 2008 20:52 (UTC) |

Well I think "eating more" isn't necessarily accurate. Many people start dieting and think the less I eat the better, which often puts them below 1000 calories. Then they see posts saying "starvation mode" and women need 1200 calories so they aim for that number. Next the find out about BMR and RMR and start eating to their BMR while exercising. Finally they find out that they need to eat their BMR + half the calories they burn working out and find a comfortable weight loss niche. Technically you're eating less than you were before you started your weight loss, but not at the extreme many crash dieters aim for. |

Original Post by lynnlette: Agreed. Your muscles will hold onto extra water for the first few weeks of weight training. It is rather unlikely that you're building a substantial amount of muscle on a calorie deficit (especially 2lbs in 2 weeks). I'd be sure to drink a lot of water to help flush out your system and be patient, the weight will come off soon enough. |

Limit your sodium and drink A LOT of water. I think adding a little bit of lemon to your water helps limit water retention as well. |

Eat your BMR + 1/2 the calories burned during exercise. So, if you think your BMR is 1200, and you burned 400 calories at the gym, you should eat 1400 calories on that day. Since you already had a 400 calorie deficit with just being alive, with the 200 calories you burned off without eating back, your deficit is now 600, which should result in more than a pound a week. |

| Weight Loss | question about posture and other 'cheats': looking 5 pounds lighter in 3 seconds | May 23 2008 18:06 (UTC) |

I used to be a dancer and an important trick in posture we always used was to watch the curve of your spine. A lot of people tend to push their chest forward and their butts back which makes an 'S' with your spine. This also pushes your belly out so that it looks like you have a big butt and a big belly. If you push your hips forward slightly it helps to align your spine properly, gives you better posture and makes you look more proportioned. |

| The Lounge | Let's talk about ring placement.. | May 23 2008 17:17 (UTC) |

The ring my boyfriend bought me was too big and I was going to get it sized but he was so afraid that the jeweler would steal the diamond (there are stories) that he went out and got a ring guard instead. It's just a little strand of metal that you can bend and take off and readjust the size. The only problem with it is that the edges where the guard wraps around the ring sometimes pinch my finger. It would probably work for your hubby, but I consider it a temporary solution. And your marriage is far more important then some rings. My parents have been married nearly 25 years and haven't worn their rings for about 10 years now. I personally don't think ring placement matters, if you want to flaunt it, put it on whatever finger you want. (I would avoid toes though) |

I love Panera's "You Pick 2" combo. I usually get a Greek salad and Turkey sandwich and it comes with a side of a baguette or apple for about $6. It's a little more pricey than most fast food restaurants, but delicious! |

Perhaps try eating at your maintainence level for you current weight for a few days and slowly reduce about 100 - 200 calories a week until you're used to 1750. That way you won't be gaining anymore weight, but you won't be suffering either. |

The beauty about pizza is that it makes a great leftover, so even if you don't finish it all: It's not the end of the world. I agree with above posters, throw together a homemade salad to go with the pizza and have a big helping of that. By the time you get to the pizza you'll be full after one slice, and one slice won't hurt you. In fact take an opportunity after dinner to go for a nice walk with your boyfriend. You'll feel a lot better afterward. Also, offer to make dinner or some other meal this weekend. This way you can throw together something healthy that you can enjoy guilt free, and if throughout the weekend they try to get you to eat something else unhealthy, say that you have to finish the leftovers from the meal you made. |

I work in the freshmen dining hall at my school... the all you can eat kind... where everything is deep fried... or sugar. It's SO hard to find a balanced meal there. Luckily they started making grilled chicken breast available daily as a burger substitute so I usually grab one of those, some brown rice, and a heaping portion of steamed veggies. They also have a pretty nice salad/fruit bar that I munch on through the shift. Now if they could only move the cereal dispensers away from the "break" area, I'd stop downing Apple Jacks for three hours. |

I think a light beer has about the same calories as a shot/mixer. If you're only drinking one day a week allow yourself a "cheat day" where you consume your maintainence calorie level. That way you can enjoy a few beers guilt free. |

Although I doubt a week of detoxing will do any permanent damage, at 17 your body can definitely take care of cleansing itself. Eliminating highly processed foods and other junk from your diet, I think is the best cleanse. Fruit juice for a week? I eat about 4 pieces of fruit a day and already my sugar intake is too high. Definitely make sure you squeeze in some protein, even if it's in the form of a veggie and bean cocktail or protein powder. Getting at least 1500 calories is key though. |

Since you're burning 3283 on days you exercise and want to create a 1000 calorie deficit to lose 2lbs a week: 3282 - 1000 = ~2200 calories on days you don't exercise 2419 - 1000 = ~1400 calories

Original Post by petite_powerhouse: This may be veering a little off topic for this forum, but what kind of cardio do you suggest? Would it be using the stationary bike/elliptical with high resistance? Using the stair master? Treadmill with an incline? I'm more interested in losing the jiggle than the numbers on the scale so I'm interested in the optimal approach. |

The side effects of allergy medications keep some people from using them. Natural remedies can be a great alternative, but some are more effective than others.
