Weight Loss Women: Maintaining breast size while losing weight? Jul 31 2010

I've been told that chest exercises are good for enhancing your bust...not the size necessarily so much as making sure that what you do have does not sag.

Yes!! They work. Thank goodness for chest exercises!!

I lost ~70lbs and went from a 36D/36DD to a 34C. Around 10lbs ago, I started noticing that not only were my boobs shrinking, but because of the weight gain/ weight loss...they had started to sag, noticeably! I incorporated a lot of chest exercises in my upper-body days and within 3-4 weeks, I saw a nice little lift. Even though I didn't want to go down to a 34C in the first place, the chest exercises make me much more comfortable with my bust. They may be smaller than before, but they definitely look better lol.

Weight Loss Sudden drops? Jul 31 2010

Happens to me all the time. It's completely normal. Weight in general fluctuates, so naturally, weight loss will too. It happens more often/ more noticeably with women depending on our cycles because of all the different hormones depending on the TOM.

HIIT is very effective for weight loss. Any high intensity training is going to lead to a larger amount of calories burned during exercise and in turn, greater weight loss benefits.

I love this thread!

I started off at 194lbs. I actually didn't think I was that big. But at 5'2, I was. I began exercising regularly and counting calories. The next time I weight myself was several weeks later and I was 177. I felt a little better about myself but not much. Anyway, I kept at it, and once I hit 165 I wanted to go out and celebrate. Instead of buying a new dress, I wanted to wear the one I bought and couldn't wear because it was too tight at 194...and guess what. It was too big! I think that was the first time I ever cried happy tears lol. I felt like all the hard work was paying off..and I was really, really proud of myself.

You aren't off base at all..you are absolutely correct. Regardless of what her goals are (weight loss, weight gain, muscle increase)...she should be eating more than she is. I am also 5'2, but I'm trying to lose a few lbs, I don't work out 1/2 as much as she does, I eat more, and I'm still losing weight. She definitely needs to up her caloric intake. As for gaining muscle, it's hard to say exactly what she should be eating. My guess is that with all the cardio she's doing, and her current weight, she should probably be eating around 2000 to maintain. Since her goal is to GAIN muscle mass, she should up her calories about 300 a day. The thing with gaining muscle mass is that you can't just eat 300 extra calories of chips. She needs to incorporate more protein in her diet. The protein is where the surplus of calories should come from.

Also, is she participating in weight training/ resistance exercises? You just listed her aerobic activities. Good luck in trying to convince your sister that she needs to be eating quite a bit more than she is...ESPECIALLY since she's trying to gain muscle. You can't gain muscle on a deficit.

I ate pretty crappy this weekend too! I notice that during my TOM, I don't really gain weight even though I eat horribly. Maybe it increases our metabolism?? That would be pretty awesome. I also tend to lose the most weight right before it. My weight usually creeps down very slowly, and then right before-- 2lbs down!! lol

I told you my weight just barely creeps down every week! Urgh so frustrating! Anyhoo, must_lose20, it looks like we're the only two on here :(

Man, I just still like eating food, happy or not.

Me too.  I'm already a happy person, though I'd still like to lose a little bit of weight.

Me three. Even when I'm my happiest, I still indulge in high calorie foods that lead me to gaining weight/ stall my losing weight. I just love food. lol

So you do track on top of that exercising? If so, I'd just stick with track conditioning for your cardio and do weights 2-3 times a week.

If your blood tests came out negative for any deficiencies than perhaps you do need to lower your exercise and up your calories. It seems a little odd to me though...you seem to be eating enough and not exercising so much that you lose your period. But, I guess all out bodies are different.

And yes, you're right...too much fiber can absolutely lead to constipation, so maybe you just need to lower your fiber intake. From what you described as your normal everyday meals, you seem to be getting a good mix of everything in there. I would suggest you add a starch during dinner though. Maybe a baked potato or something like that.

I'm going to assume that you're just trying to maintain right now, because 5'4 and 133 is great. Use phord.com/cc if you haven't already. I would suggest you eat ~2000-2200 calories a day.

So you're drinking 16-19 cups of water a day?? Too much water can cause electrolyte imbalances and issues with your kidneys...but that doesn't seem like enough to cause any problems since you're exercising. Try to change it up though...next week, try to drink less water (because remember, we get a lot of water from our foods too!). Drink about 8-10 cups instead of your usual 16-19. If you become more regular, then you found the culprit to your problem! Are you hypoglycemic? I drink a lot of water a day too (probably around 10-12 cups) and even when I'm vigorously exercising I don't get too thirsty because I'm properly hydrated all of the time anyway. If you're still feeling dehydrated with all that water, that could be a red flag. Did you talk to your doctor about that as well?

Weight Loss What causes body fat buildup? Jul 10 2010

The only fat I try to avoid is trans fat.

In general, dietary fat is an important part of a balanced diet, and it should not be avoided.

Agreed.

And to answer a few of your original questions. You are 17 years old, so I'm assuming your in high school? Your athletic department should have something to measure body fat-- either calipers or the hand grip dynamometer.

I can pretty much guarantee that you don't have a high body fat percentage. But, hypothetically speaking, you can have a slightly high body fat percentage but be in a very healthy weight range...however, it's nearly impossible to be as close to underweight as you are and still have a really high body fat percentage.

How fat is stored-- anything over how much your burning (BMR + exercise + thermic effect of food)...anything over that number can be turned into fat. Many years ago, a diet fat came out where people ate fat free foods and thought they would lose all this weight because of it, and were shocked to have gained weight. Any excess calories you have will be stored as fat: be it eating 4000 calories of carbs, veggies, fruits, fats...you get my point.

By what you described, you aren't exercising too much. If you're worried about that, I would err on the side of 30 minutes of walking instead of 60...also, you can gauge too much exercise by how you feel. Exercise should make you feel refreshed actually make you feel like you have more energy in your days. It shouldn't make you hurt all the time, and make you feel lethargic. So how are you feeling after a day of exercise?

As for the period, that can be a number of different things. Could you have an iron deficiency? Or another type of mineral or vitamin deficiency? I would suggest you get some blood work done, and maybe see a gynecologist to check things out. Also, make sure you're actually eating 1500-1700 calories a day (it seems like you should be eating more like 1700 if you're trying to lose and even more if you're just trying to maintain)...are you logging in your calories accurately? I know when I used to just estimate in my head, I'd always think I ate more than I really did. So that's important too.

Not "going" as regularly anymore could just be a temporary thing. It could be just your change in diet and your body adjusting to it. Make sure you have a lot of everything in your diet--fruits and veggies, fats, carbs. I try to follow the pyramid as best as I can. Try adding more fiber to your diet. I eat a fiber bar and a piece of fruit every day for breakfast...that should help fix that problem!

Describe how much "a lot of water is". If you aren't feeling uncomfortable after drinking all that water...you probably aren't drinking too much.

Let me know if you have any other questions..I hope I cleared up some of your concern :)

Weight Loss Do the types of foods I eat really matter? Jul 10 2010

I agree with most of what everyone has to has. Hypothetically speaking, you can eat whatever you want within those 1200 calories and lose weight. If calories in < calories out, then regardless, you will lose weight. However, by roughly following the pyramid, you'll be able to get most of your essential vitamins and minerals. If you ate, let's say...1200 calories of ritz crackers every day, you won't get all of vits/mins and develop a deficiency that can kill you.

Also, having a variety of foods, and adding lots of fruits and veggies to your diet can definitely help A LOT with hunger. I know when I eat 1000 calories of junk before dinner, I always find myself STARVING. But if I've filled my my meals with fruits, veggies, lean proteins etc, I'm barely hungry by dinner...even after eating the same calories! I'm sure this question was more of a hypothetical, just out of curiosity scenario, but just in case--please do yourself/ your body a favor and try to keep all the food groups in your diet. Make sure you're getting most of your nutrients from food and maybe take a multi-vitamin to cover your bases.

ETA: I've found frozen bagged veggies to be pretty economical....esp. because you can use just as much as you need, and the rest won't go bad in the freezer!

I 2nd this! I was going to say the same thing. Store brand bagged veggies are about $1 each. Also, I've found that grocery stores have trends in whats on sale. For example: I shop at Publix and every month or so they sell chicken breasts for $2.99/lb. When that happens, I stock up and freeze them. I'd say just watch out for the sales and do what you can with what's on sale...that's what I do. It takes a lot of creativity and a little extra time, but healthy shopping on a budget can be done.

I also agree that any little changes help: the whole grain pasta idea and etc. I'll look through my recipe collection and see if I can find anything that's both healthy and budget friendly :)

I'm very happy I didn't gain more than that. I ate as if I was on a weight gain diet this week lol. I did start a new work out routine, with a higher intensity than I'm used to. Hopefully I'll see some better results this week.

Congrats, must_lose20! What a great loss!!

Weight Loss please help me. Jun 21 2010

 I 2nd what nebichan said!

Firstly, start off slow. Make a commitment you can handle. Much too often, people jump in saying that they'll go to the gym 7 days a week, quit drinking, and eat organic healthy foods every day. That's usually not doable. Start off adjusting your calorie intake. Use caloriecount and put in everything you're eating. Use phord.com/cc to see an estimate of how many calories you should be consuming and burning to reach your goal. Go to the gym 2-3 times a week and do activities you like...or if you don't like the gym, take a walk, jog, play tennis, basketball, wii...something, anything...2-3 times a week.

As for drinking with the friend after work...stop making excuses. I understand a hospital job is stressful, heck, anything dealing with people, especially sick people, is frustrating! But by coming on caloriecount, you have decided that losing weight and getting healthy is important to you. What's more important...drinks at the tavern to loosen up, or getting healthier and raising your self esteem? That's a decision you need to make. For me, going to a tavern and having a diet coke is unrealistic. So, if that's the case for you, I suggest this: Only allow yourself to go one night a week. And remember, that overdoing it that ONE night, can ruin your entire weeks worth of hard work. So leave your credit cards in the glove compartment of your car or at home, and allow yourself $15-20 of cash. That leaves you with 2 drinks and a side salad. Be wise about your drinks: a light beer, gin and diet tonic, jack and diet coke, a vodka martini without the frills.

I hope my advice has helped you..and I hope that you decide to pursue you're new, healthier lifestyle. I know all too well how tempting it is to unwind after a hard day of work with something greasy at a local bar paired with a few glasses of wine, but trust me, not only will cutting back allow you to enjoy those few nights where you allow yourself to do that much more, but you will feel better about yourself in general. Good luck!!! And message me if you need any more advice :)
